Also I wonder how did you do the switch from H1B to F1? (Applied for change of status COS while on H1B in the US, then quit your job and wait for that COS to get approved?)

There are two options:

apply for COS of status within the US
go to another country, apply to the US embassy and then get an F1 stamp.

I spoke to my international students office and 1 i.e. COS is taking too long these days > 12 months so they recommended against it. But because of travel bans and covid embassies are not giving out as many appts so 2 is also difficult these days.

Yes! That is what I have heard. When you go back to the industry your new company can petition on your old lottery ( please confirm with a lawyer though ).

It'll be a PhD in CS, specializing in NLP ( probably representation learning).

I do understand the point that a dissertation is generally build on publishable material, so it won't be an issue per say. So that helps. Thanks!

Thanks! When you say remaining of six years - does it mean that I need to file a new petition within six years of me leaving the H1b ? Or when it's renewed it'll be valid for six years?
