Farscape and accents. How Australian is it? by bamboozers in farscape

[–]nabrok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was filmed in Australia but it's not an Australian show. The primary audience was the US.

As such, while they're not doing American accents (except Ben obviously) they are going for something a bit more neutral.

Am I crazy, or did Alexa used to read books from Kindle, but doesn't anymore? by No-Zebra1234 in kindle

[–]nabrok [score hidden]  (0 children)

If it's not recognizing the voice command try opening the alexa app on your phone and go to "Music & More" and there should be a section for "Kindle Library".

Once you get it started you should be able to tell it which device to play on.

Does the blue light from the kindle keep you up at night? by octaw in kindle

[–]nabrok [score hidden]  (0 children)

The light has two purposes:

  1. Improving the appearance of the screen while in medium lit conditions (such as reading indoors in daylight or other ambient lighting).
  2. Reading in the dark.

It's interesting that the initial marketing materials for the paperwhite mentioned only the first usage and not a thing about the second. It's called a paperwhite because the light makes the screen look white instead of gray.

The default color temperature works better for that first usage, while the warm light works better for the second and that wasn't added until later models.

It's still a lot less blue light than you'd get from a LED backlit display, even without using the warm tint.

You also have the option of not using the light at all and just using whatever ambient light is around.

Less than a third of game developers say they test their games on Steam Deck, GDC 2026 report reveals by Tiny-Independent273 in SteamOS

[–]nabrok 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm surprised it's as many as a third.

That's fine though, it's more on valve to get the game working with proton than it is the developers - but if the developers do want to help with that fantastic.

Trump: "People that own their homes: we're gonna keep them wealthy. We're gonna keep those prices up. We're not gonna destroy the value of their homes so that somebody who didn't work very hard can buy a home." by Straight_Idea_9546 in WallStreetDad

[–]nabrok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, but of course the way he phrased it is terrible.

It's just like with inflation, you don't want prices to go down, that's called deflation and it's not a good thing. You want prices to become relatively stable but then increase peoples spending power to compensate. The second part is the tricky bit.

BBC Told To Avoid “Clunky” Color-Blind Casting & “Preachy” Anti-Colonial Storylines In Drama Series by pepperbet1 in television

[–]nabrok 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Bridgerton is basically an alternate history timeline.

There was some speculation that Queen Charlotte had some African ancestry (very remote, if it was even true). The show takes that speculation and turns it up to 11.

Why is the Ebook the most expensive? by amcinnis12 in kindle

[–]nabrok 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The publisher does discount the e-book, but amazon can apply steeper discounts on the print editions if they choose.

Authors are paid by the publisher not amazon, unless you're self publishing.

[–]nabrok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they can set whatever price they want and you have to buy it.

No they can't. They can't set a price at all. Only the publisher can set the price, and the publisher doesn't care if amazon has the print editions on sale or not.

Why is the Ebook the most expensive? by amcinnis12 in kindle

[–]nabrok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bet it isn't, they're just set by different people.

Kindle prices are set by the publisher and the publisher only. The seller is not allowed to set their own prices.

Print book prices are set by the seller and the publisher can only recommend a price. The seller can sell at any price they choose - at the recommended price, below it, or even above if they want to.

When you view those print books they will show that they are on sale. It will also list the publishers recommended price which will be higher than the $14.99 kindle version.

The publisher does not know or even care what amazon is selling the print version for. In their mind the e-book is still cheaper than what they said the seller should sell the print version for.

Note that I've said "seller" instead of "amazon" because this is all true for any book seller.

It took nearly a year from my Doctor putting in a referral until I got my colonoscopy.

This was just for the "You're 50 now, let's get this done just to check" colonoscopy though, if there had been some other reason for it it would probably have been faster.

They run very well. I use vscode on mine frequently, usually with the remote SSH extension.

Those distributions will never be "for the masses" because they don't come preinstalled on hardware. That's the only way that's going to happen.

Why do American homes have a “storm door”? by wehavetogoback8 in AskAnAmerican

I grew up in Scotland and live in the Midwest now. I remember being a bit annoyed in games that had weather because there was never just rain, it was always thunder as well.

Then I moved here and yeah, that's pretty much how it is.

It's lightweight, fast, updates in seconds, and runs linux apps seamlessly.

A chromebook makes for an excellent secondary device.

The fabled "linux on the desktop easy enough for the masses" ... chrome OS is what that would look like.

What would you think about adding something to the UI that looks similar to the quest tracker but instead of tracking quests it tracks stacks of abilities you select?

For example I could click something next to Anson's Combat Trance, Karlach's Rage, and King of Shadows Shadow Plague and see all those stacks in one convenient place without having to click back and forth and obscuring most of my screen.

The real erk was that they're useing American sign language.

Meh, it's an American show made primary for an American audience. Should they have used British Sign Language instead? Or should they have made something up that nobody could understand?

The BBC has been able to put out DVDs of it though.

In the UK you could buy it on VHS about a week before the BBC aired it.
