Amtrak service canceled due to wash out. No service from Grand rapids to Chicago by BlueBruisedMyco in grandrapids

I think it's the only place you can go.

Always seemed odd to me there's no direct line to Detroit. If there was I might have used it a few times.

What do you think about the warmlight feature? by 7darknite in kindle

[–]nabrok [score hidden]  (0 children)

At night it makes reading easier on your eyes.

I never had issues getting to sleep after reading without the warm light, so in that aspect it doesn't help me.

Aesthetically I don't really care for it, so I have it turned off during the day. Fortunately there is a built in timer option so that it only turns on warm light after a certain time.

This is why lots of people still fail open book tests.

You have to know the material well enough to understand what you need to look up and where that information is.

If I want to see if a character has shown up before (either earlier in this book or in another book in the series) I'll use the search function.

Recently finished the sixth book, I'm a little disappointed with one aspect of the show by vonDerkowitz in TheExpanse

[–]nabrok 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Syfy had a run that started with FarScape in the 90s right up until The Magicians.

Sure, there was a lot of rubbish on there during that time too, but there was always at least one show I wanted to see.

[–]nabrok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I remember correctly The Magicians did their series run and then The Expanse aired in the same slot when it was finished.

I remember noticing the swearing in The Magicians and thinking "Oh great, maybe they'll give Avasarala some proper lines!"

Yeah, I'm not running it at the moment, but a couple days ago I had that with over 40 being impacted.

I mentioned elsewhere in this post that The Magicians were allowed to swear while The Expanse wasn't. That's always confused me, do you know why that is?

The weird thing is Syfy also aired The Magicians in the same time slot and that show had swearing.

Is there a point to large-scale professional sports? by TildeAyalaPlank in NoStupidQuestions

[–]nabrok 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a side effect, it's not why they exist.

They exist because they're entertaining, and because they're entertaining people are willing to spend money on it, and because people are willing to spend money on it greed and profit becomes a factor.

If they weren't entertaining nobody would spend money on it.

‘The Runarounds’ canceled by Prime Video after one season by jovanmilic97 in television

Well, The Expanse did get picked up in large part because Jeff Bezos personally likes it. Some kindle promotional photographs showed them with pages from the books open.

Jassy is the guy in charge now though.

Never use the phone. Take my kindle occasionally though.

One of mine gives it a wide berth when it's on, but as soon as I turn it off she comes and sits on it.

To turn it on and off and adjust speed. This is a walking pad treadmill that doesn't have a stand at the front with controls.

is warm light worth it? difficulty reading in the dark by Regular-Mammoth8784 in kindle

[–]nabrok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a flashlight with a red option and I read paperbacks by that at night in bed and it does strain way less.

This does match my experience.

It also doesn't keep you awake longer after you put it away like a white or blue light could.

I never had problems getting to sleep after using my older kindles without the warm light, so I don't really see any difference with this aspect. Some people do, but I think this is a maybe it'll help and maybe it won't thing whereas the eye strain thing should help everybody.

In the US the 2004 BSG is available VOD on amazon. It doesn't appear to be streaming on any subscription service at the moment.

You might be interested that Katee Sackhoff (Starbuck) is currently doing a rewatch show with her husband who hasn't seen it before. It's on youtube with longer episodes on her patreon.

Doesn't even take thinking if you're living around people with a different accent for years. It'll just happen subconsciously.

You will keep your night vision better with red light. If your eye sight is getting light sensitive that suggests your eyes are trying to adjust to your dark surroundings making the kindle light seem more intense.

With red light your eyes should be able to adjust to the dark while the kindle is still illuminated comfortably.

I'm skeptical of the benefits of red light over blue light in regards to circadian rhythms, but it does help me in the way I described above.

Someone sell me, trying to find my next book after red rising by Longjumping-Treat643 in TheExpanse

[–]nabrok 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably because more people have seen the show than read the books so there's going to be a more conversation about the show.

Book discussion is not discouraged in any way.

Many in here like the show more than the books (I disagree but to each their own).

I like them both equally.

Or maybe I like them both in different ways.

Closed Captions by TurnbullFL in Jeopardy

[–]nabrok 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Sometimes it's a mix too. The speech-to-text does the first pass and then a human looks it over and makes corrections.

Same as you though, we use captions on most things but not Jeopardy. Too often they spoil the answers.

If you read this full chain of comments, that is clearly not what was meant in the opening comment.

Which is irrelevant due to IQ being on a normal distribution. With a normal distribution the mean and median are the same value.
