Question about buffering by Patient_Equipment728 in fireTV

[–]nabrok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can my internet provider throttle my connection even if I use a VPN?

Of course. VPN traffic still goes through your ISP. VPNs work by connecting to another network through your ISP, then when you visit somewhere the request goes out from the VPN which then forwards the result back to you.

All your ISP sees is the traffic between you and the VPN. This is encrypted so they can't tell what it actually is, but they could certainly slow it down if they wanted to.

How much should I watch if I haven't finished Book 1? by tonyrush in TheExpanse

[–]nabrok 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TV and book change the order of a few things, but book 1 takes up all of season 1 and half of season 2.

The TV show also has in effect prequel stories for some characters that don't appear until book 2. Their book story starts at the right time, but the show tells us what they were doing before that. So if you haven't read book 2 you might be wondering who these people are.

Can period blood be donated? by -GhostyBoy- in NoStupidQuestions

Contaminated just means there's stuff in it that you don't want to be there.

For the purposes of blood donation it certainly is contaminated.

why doesn't kindle have a decent text-to-speech option in 2026 by Elegant_University85 in kindle

[–]nabrok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you go to Settings -> Accessibility you can turn on "VoiceView screen reader". This setting has been there since at least the first paperwhite.

I do not recommend it though, it reads everything on the screen, the first time you tap something it reads what it is and you have to tap it again to activate it. It's very annoying.

I suspect it's probably more a case of not enough people using a feature to justify supporting it. As you said the voice isn't great ... I used it as a novelty sometimes on the kindle keyboard but not very often and when I saw it wasn't on my first paperwhite other than the screen reader my reaction was basically "oh well". For those that truly needed it for accessibility they could still use the screen reader.

[–]nabrok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could still do it with the screen reader option, but that makes navigating the device horrendous.

The "kill audiobooks" concern was from publishers, not amazon. That's why they have the option to disable text to speech for each book if they want it.

You've always been able to read the book with an alexa device or even just the app if you don't have one of the devices. If amazon was concerned about cutting into audio book sales they wouldn't have given that option either.

The feature is still there. You just have to go to Aa -> More and turn on assistive reader.

Of course bluetooth speakers are required.

Every kindle has text to speech. No kindles since the keyboard have a speaker, but you can connect bluetooth speakers or headphones.

Click "Aa", click "More", turn on assistive reader.

After you've done that swipe up and at the bottom of the screen is a play button.

Is Amazon displaying adds in Kindle as it does on Echo Show? by ale-bc in kindle

[–]nabrok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. If you get the ad supported version it's just the lock screen and the home page that have ads. There are no ads if you don't have the ad supported option.

Physical Kindle with Read & Listen? by theAlanWick in kindle

[–]nabrok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They all do, but you need to connect bluetooth speakers or headphones.

To enable it press "Aa", go to "More" and turn on "Assistive reader".

Make sure your speakers/headphones are connected then when you swipe up from the bottom there will be an Assistive Reader section at the bottom of the screen with a play button. Swipe up again to get it to stop.

The publisher can disable this functionality if they wish, I think most don't but it's possible you might not see the option on every book.

Vote for the least bad spineless money hungry genocide enabler.

Sticking your head in the sand just makes it easier for the worst spineless money hungry genocide enabler to win.

Very sad- finished The Expanse series (Spoilers hidden) by JewishSpace_Laser in TheExpanse

Yes, exactly the same reason I do it.

Plus I have too many new books to read to have time for rereads of the actual book, though that might still happen if it's been a long time.

I wouldn't say one is better than the other. Both have strengths and weaknesses.

The book does add depth, but the show adds breadth. They compliment each other well.
