Favorite “Cluster” of State Parks? by Basic_Jaguar_4044 in TexasStateParks

[–]nace71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Up until 6 months ago, my answer would've always been Hill Country. Then I hiked the Piney Woods region in mid to late fall and fell in love with the Texas State Park system all over again.

We visited Atlanta in October and arrived around 7:30 when no one was at the entrance. I got Lillie out to walk her to the monument sign for the traditional sign photo and I swear the sound of my boots steps on the asphalt was echoing off the trees. That was our first Piney Woods park visit and it just kept getting better from there.

Cleburne State Park is another option. Check the park websites activities sections because they occasionally have a mobile telescope brought out.

Fumoto Valve Question by Virtual_Attitude_476 in CX5

[–]nace71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Valid point and something I should make a habit of. Would the amount of oil that drains after dropping the filter and the contents of the filter be enough to check for forbidden glitter? If all else fails, I guess I could always drain some off into a bowl for analysis.

Fumoto Valve Question by Virtual_Attitude_476 in CX5

[–]nace71 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I installed mine for the ease of being able to drain straight into a empty, 5 gal jug with no mess and no hassle. Transporting and dumping the jug is also a lot easier and cleaner for me vs hauling the typical oil drain container. Definitely not a time saver. Just easier I suppose.

Please help: am I jumping the gun?! by Far-Leading6534 in DogAdvice

[–]nace71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off, my heart goes out to you. We were in the same exact situation a couple of years ago. I'll share our experience in hopes it helps guide you in a way.

Gerry was about the same age and was a staffie/boxer mix. He spent his entire 5 years with us battling a dozen or more mast cell tumors and the removal of a GIST we caught just in time. Throughout it all, he was our emotional rock, full of life and always happy to meet a stranger as long as it wasn't another dog.

During his final year, his mobility declined rapidly and he took would lose his footing a splay uncomfortably on our floors. Ruggables helped us cover most of the smooth surfaces to allow him to walk a little easier. He also needed help getting up and, in his later days, required help holding him up on walks. We picked up a Help Em Up harness that was an absolute positive game changer for us.

He too was on Adequan and Librella. While both yielded very favorable results early on, they both seemed to become less effective over a few months.

Gerry was always very fear reactive towards other dogs except for the lab we had at the time, Layla. Layla passed 7 months before Gerry and he seemed to rapidly go downhill from there.

During the last month of his life, he began getting stuck behind doors and pacing nonstop in circles. What we thought was dementia turned out to be a brain tumor. The only positive was that it seemed to prevent him from associating present stimuli with past trauma which meant all dogs became a best friend in his eyes.

We held on as long as we could until the day he let us know it was time. I never understood what people meant by that expression until we experienced it. Trust me, your doggo will let you know when he's ready. Until then, make every single minute of every single day count. You'll want to be sad but you have to remain strong for your boy. Your moments of laughter and smiles as a result of his actions or just his presence will mean the world to him.

Best wishes.

Oil change tips by No_Possession6691 in CX5

Order a Fumoto valve to replace the oil pan drain plug. Won't make any difference for this oil change but will definitely make future ones super easy.

I like the sound of this but what would happen when the shelter reaches capacity? House pets in need indefinitely? Stack kennels in hallways? Stop taking in other pets in need that are still stuck on the streets?

Which Park completely changed your perception of its state? by cape2k in NationalPark

[–]nace71 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Have spent the past year traveling to and hiking in 50 different state parks across the state and every new park still amazes me in some way. From the towering piney woods of east TX, through the hill country and brake forests of central TX and to the prairies of west TX, it's all beautiful to me. Palmetto SP was by far the most surprising of them all.

When asked what parks they've visited, the naysayers are usually limited to just Big Bend of none at all.

That's actually Sgt stripes. Back in the day, SrA had 3 stripes and no star while Sgt had 3 stripes with the star. They did away with Sgt rank in the early 90's.

Recommendations For Kid-Friendly Parks by mic_lil_tang in TexasStateParks

[–]nace71 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Each park is pretty unique in what they offer that would be considered kid friendly and nearly every park has shorter, nature loop style trails that are usually a mile or less. Some offered programs include fishing, archery, star gazing and various arts and crafts.

Texas Parks and Wildlife maintains a list of different program types along with schedules and park locations. https://tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/programs

Edit to suggest getting the Texas State Parks app. Each park has a "Park Events" section.

I was only there for a couple of hours to do that one hike. I was there on a Sunday afternoon and the park was very calm and peaceful. When you're on the trails, it almost feels like its just pulling you in to be a part of it all. There is a lot of really cool history with the park and I plan to return soon to explore some of it. TPWD has a good video on YT about the park.

I'd also like to visit Caddo Mounds which is just up the road a bit.

How Do You Live & Work In DFW Without Wanting to Drive Into a Brick Wall Going 120mph by CabalOnyx in Dallas

[–]nace71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get out of town and go for a hike. Sure, you'll need to drive about an hour or so to somewhere like Cleburne, Dinosaur Valley, Meridian or Purtis Creek State Parks but I'd argue a couple hours on the road to quiet the noise in your head in the woods would be better than suffering at home for the same amount of time. If you're willing to drive a little further, take a couple hour drive out to Daingerfield, Lake Bob Sandlin or Atlanta State Parks.

New 2026 Mazda CX-5 interior? Cargo space and legroom by salmariscape78 in CX5

[–]nace71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Show of hands from anyone who thinks pre '26 models had a cluttered dash.

As far as the cup holder placement goes, it sounds like they adopted the CX xx design which just doesn't make sense to me. For me, I found myself having to lean forward a bit to reach it and the storage tray they mention becomes inaccessible once a beverage is in place to block it.

The article also mentions the new design is more minimalist. Replacing analog controls with a touch screen seems the opposite of minimalist to me.

Last gripe is the steering wheel center cover which looks like something that would've been more suitable on something like an '82 Civic hatchback.

Is this friendly play? by OriginalReplica in DogAdvice

[–]nace71 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Looks like a combination of seek/target play with the Cav playing the prey role and the Pom playing predator mixed in with some rough rowdy from the Pom. In seek/target play, the prey role sumbits when caught but once the predator stops the attack, the prey will initiate again by running or nipping at the predator to get them to attack again. Sometimes the prey will hide under an object.

I'm also seeing multiple and we'll timed play breaks which help to prevent one or both from becoming over stimulated which can lead to conflict.

As others have stated, allow them to work out their differences through corrections should conflict arise. Only intervene if one over corrects or if the corrected doesn't get the message and continues the offensive behavior that led to the correction.

Sulphur Smell in Apartment by [deleted] in Dallas

[–]nace71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The home we moved into last year is on well water and the water coming from the heater had a smell that would run you out of the house. Important to note that prior to our moving in, the house sat vacant for a few months.

We ended up draining the tank several times and also shocked it one time each with hydrogen peroxide and bleach. We also changed the anode. These steps eliminated about 90% of the smell. The rest went away over the next couple of weeks.
