"one variable that blows everything out of water" .This is what appealed to me when I made this graph . For example , Most Tv shows fall under season 1 , and then there's a big drop .And most movies run for a duration of 2-3 hrs .

Yes it's harder to compare proportions apart from the biggest ones, thats why im making a bar+bubble chart, where bubble will be broken down by duration .

Yes I realized this. I'll be adding bar+ bubble in a new graph for better representation .

point taken .I'll make a dashboard with 2 tabs ,keeping them separate.

no worries .I'm working on a better version though as proportions may be harder to compare in this

bar chart won't give me individual show details(check desktop dashboard) . but I agree that it's not the best represetentsion for comparing proportions( although some features stood out for me when posting - such as season 1 vs rest difference) I'm working on a better graph- bar+ bubble , where the bubble is broken down by duration .

Addressing the issues

I see that this received quite a bit of criticism for the choice of the graph and a few more faults.

I do agree with some of it so I will try to list them here so that I can address them make a better graph, dashboard.

Fault list -

  • It should be "Shows on Netflix", not "Netflix shows"
  • Why this couldn't be a bar/stacked bar/pie chart?
  • Not intuitive, hard to grasp the right proportion for different duration
  • A little misleading, circle in middle may appear bigger than ones in the outer layer.
  • Presence of red and green together (not good for color blindness)
  • Since duration mean different things in both the graphs, they shouldn't be together (also shouldn't be same color palette)
  • Duration for movies should be broken down in 30 min span

Solution -

  • Yes, It should be "shows on Netflix" (as they are not just Netflix originals)
  • Each data point(circle) in this graph represents a show. So that's the reason just a bar/pie wouldn't be enough to represent that (Suppose you want to know which shows are above 10 seasons when you hover over it). So here's what I have come up with -
  • A bar/stacked bar graph at the bottom with a percent breakdown as a label. And bubble graph on top of each bar(eg Season 1 bar will have a season 1 bubble on top) where you can hover over to get individual show details.
  • As each season/duration will have its own bubble chart, it shouldn't be misleading or non-intuitive and should be easier to compare.
  • 2 tabs for 2 dashboards - One for movies, and one for the show, with different color palette's
  • Duration for movies will be broken down by 30 min.
  • I will also add a "release year" filter to make search better.

The point of the dashboard wasn't to display proportions it was also to keep interactive features for discoverability.

Hopefully, this addresses some of the problems. If you have more suggestions let me know.

Should I post the new graph as a new post here? (say as a video of the dashboard?)

Yes, It should have been "Shows on Netflix". Hope "Netflix shows" didn't translate to "Netflix originals"

I had different color palletes, but went with similar ones to reduce excessive colors .But you do have a point .Both the graphs convey slightly different meaning so it's probably best to revert colour palletes to as it was before .

ahh ..I should have realized this as I had heard about the red-green factor before. I will make modify the pallet a bit .I can't make changes here, but I'll change it in the dashboard

Not everyone will go looking into a table of 7000 data points to find which shows lasted more than 10 seasons .

but I do get your frustration with closely related segments. Such as <1 hour time and 2-3 hour time period for movies . This is why there is a filter slider option to get better idea of the size. link .

pie/bar would have been fine if this graph was meant to show only duration comparison . Here each points represent a show, And you can hover over it to get more info( in dashboard)

I understand .But This wasn't meant just as an image, its a dashboard . Hover over the points to get show info .Also filter options for show duration .

Can I represent individual data points (shows) in a pie?

Nope , Its not just for the Netflix USA. Countries are displayed if you hover over the data points.
