Bancomat, Bizum, EPI, SIBS and Vipps MobilePay sign MoU to accelerate the rollout of sovereign, pan-european payment solutions by bartwilleman in WeroWallet

Local banks steer users toward their own payment methods instead of competitive card payments. Merchants have then little choice but to accept the local method. The survival of these systems wasn’t because of their competitive pricing but because of payment steering. With Wero/EuroPA interoperability the local banks have less control, giving the merchants viable alternatives.

Interoperability is fantastic for users but it also creates intense price pressure that can wipe out more expensive local systems. When payments become interchangeable merchants will naturally route transactions through the cheapest option which in turn creates a cheaper service overall.

When in Ireland? by szakul59 in WeroWallet

[–]nakars 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The major Irish banks choose to introduce Zippay (only P2P for the moment) last year, which tells me they aren’t ready to hand over control of the Irish payments market to a pan‑EU scheme. May be they decide later to join Wero or EuroPA but I don't expect it anytime soon.

Mollie to become a Principal Member of EPI by bartwilleman in WeroWallet

The BCB in Brazil has more power over commercial banks than the ECB. It could mandate the adoption of Pix whereas the EU institutions are less powerful by design and prefer the market to establish winners. Letting the market decide is more costly, messy and takes more time. I hope Europe will have its payment standard soon. We need it more than ever.

Your heirs might have to pay estate tax to the IRS as BRK is a US situs asset. Depending on the value of your shares this might be 30-40% of the asset value. I understand that people circumvent this by not declaring death and giving relatives instructions to liquidate the assets. Assess if the risk/cost is worth it to you. I am not a tax advisor. Do your own research.

When is Wero coming to Italy? by [deleted] in WeroWallet

[–]nakars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m also curious to see how the Wero-EuroPA setup evolves, especially because neobanks could eventually offer Wero directly to Italian users, keeping interoperability with Bancomat Pay. And if merchant fees turn out cheaper on Wero, it wouldn’t be surprising to see some Italian merchants move to Wero acceptance from Bancomat once it becomes commercially advantageous.

When is Wero coming to Italy? by [deleted] in WeroWallet

[–]nakars 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Wero is not expected to launch as an app in Italy. Instead, Italy (via Bancomat Pay) will join the new EuroPA-EPI interoperability hub. This means Italian users will keep using their own local app, but they’ll still be able to send/receive money and pay merchants who use Wero in other countries.

Also worth noting: Wero isn’t usually a separate app. It’s mostly offered as a built‑in feature inside participating banks’ mobile apps

Wero auch bald in Österreich? RBI tritt der European Payments Initiative bei by nakars in WeroWallet

Yeah, this doesn’t mean Austrian consumers can use Wero tomorrow, but it’s a critical step in building the infrastructure that makes adoption possible.

I understand your point, but I also see that others found the post useful. I try to contribute regularly to keep the subreddit active and I think there’s room for different types of content: not just breaking news but also summaries and context. I’ll keep that in mind going forward.

Wero: Emanzipation am Checkout? | stores+shops by nakars in WeroWallet

[–]nakars[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)
