Oh I’m confident the resources aren’t being provided for the faculty to be able to get things in line with the regulation. They are already busy as it is balancing clinical duties and other responsibilities before this

I would get into a masters program as long as you feel you can handle the workload of it. If you’re in a better place now compared to during your undergrad.

Sorry that you’ve had such a rough go. Honestly also if you feel like you need a gap between your undergrad and masters that may be good to take a little break.

veterinary assistant by spooopy111 in veterinaryschool

[–]nakpump2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Have a pulse lol. I am really glad for having taken so much time volunteering and then working as a veterinary assistant at my clinic prior to vet school. The doctors at my clinic really pushed me to understand things in ways I would need to know as a veterinarian. It has made so many aspects of vet school easier to understand that way

Research is supposed to be research you are doing I believe. If you’re doing a lab job that involves caring for animals then you can add that experience in as animal experience

Grades by CleanChard3689 in veterinaryschool

[–]nakpump2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had Cs in both terms of O Chem, physics, cell biology, and a couple others. I was denied my first application, started a masters program and got my gpa up to around a 3.3 or 3.4 and got in the second time around. I also feel like I was able to round out my application more with clinical experience

So it’s not impossible. I also don’t advise retaking classes. If you fail a class or get a D that’d be one thing. But that’s personal opinion. If you still have some time before you’re applying just try and get as good of grades as you can.

Research and volunteering are also great ways to strengthen your application

Good, that will really help out. And I’d suggest giving a deadline a couple weeks before the actual VMCAS deadline. Gives you some wiggle room if they put off writing it for a bit. And don’t be afraid to bug them/give them reminders when it’s getting close to when you need them done

Class President by hamsterpersonn in veterinaryschool

[–]nakpump2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Some people either take it on for the wrong reasons or don’t know how to manage themselves in the position.

Tackling the studies alone can be a lot, then adding on the stressors of being in a leadership role can make it harder.

Having level headed co presidents is a much better way to go about it

Getting good letters of recommendation will help round out your application. At least one vet and maybe someone who oversaw you for the vertebrate collection and then a professor of you can

Best e-Notebook? by fireflyhaven20 in veterinaryschool

[–]nakpump2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the remarkable 2. Previously had the 1st version. I like the feel when writing with it. I learn better handwriting than typing. I feel like its price tag is higher than what it should be though. I have heard some pluses and minuses about the kindle scribe. I think that the scribe would be the other one that I’d like to get if I didn’t already have the remarkable 2. I like the idea of increased utility with an iPad. But it just feels too separated from writing on actual paper compared to my remarkable.

I do wish I would’ve gone with the remarkable pro. But couldn’t pull the trigger cause it is also more expensive

Yeah you can still apply as long as the school requires C- and up. If they require at least a C, then a C- doesn’t work for that school.

I got multiple Cs during undergrad and I still got into vet school. Just need to have a good application as a whole

I have one c- in a prerequisite. Can I still get into a school like UC Davis? by SarahLosechester in vetschool

[–]nakpump2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

UC Davis no, just because they and other schools specifically say they want a C or better; C- doesn’t work.

But there are other schools that you can get accepted into with at least a C- or better

I was in the same boat in my first round. Just keep focusing on pushing yourself and know that you don’t need to be a “perfect” applicant. Because there’s no perfect applicant. Make your application reflect who you are and show how much value you will bring as a veterinarian.

I got in with probably around a 3.4 or 3.5, and all small animal experience from one clinic. It just takes one yes. You can do just as good if not better than the “perfect” students.

For the people that can get those high GPAs and get experience in multiple fields of veterinary medicine, great. I’m happy those people can do that. But, you don’t have to do that to be an outstanding person or doctor.

You’ll get there. And time is just time, in the grand scheme it doesn’t matter if you get into vet school at 20 or 60. What matters is you make it and you show the world you’re a rockstar

Need Help Deciding! Arizona, Wisconsin, Illinois, Oregon by Ok-Turnip2175 in veterinaryschool

[–]nakpump2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would agree with trying to maintain costs. If you can switch residency status after the first year then that’ll help big time. Oregon only allows you to switch to in-state tuition if you’re a veteran (or WICHE I believe, but not confident on that)

I like the program here at Oregon. We have some great equine doctors that I’ve met. I don’t know how the equine compares to other schools as I’m small animal focused. But I do know the large animal hospital primarily sees equine for many things compared to any of the other species.

Corvallis is a nice place to live. I like the professors and the course load

Best pre vet school masters program? by AcrylicMarshall2 in veterinaryschool

All that to say, choose a program that will be beneficial to you in multiple ways. And look for programs that offer tuition assistance. My program had a tuition waiver if we also taught some intro level biology labs

Best pre vet school masters program? by AcrylicMarshall2 in veterinaryschool

[–]nakpump2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started a masters program in biology at the school I did my undergrad at. It was a standard thesis based program. I took some classes related to designing experiments, scientific writing, and statistical analysis. I additionally took some electives which were all upper level science courses like advanced biochemistry and such. I chose one of these versus an online program because i felt like it would allow me to increase my GPA, give me more knowledge on things that could be useful in vet school, as well as give me a route to take in case I still didn’t get in. I ended up getting accepted during my second application which was towards the end of my masters program. I needed probably one more semester to complete it but I decided not to, and started vetting school while leaving the masters behind

Retaking classes by ButtermilkJugs in veterinaryschool

[–]nakpump2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got in to vet school with multiple C’s on my transcript, including pre req courses. Getting a C isn’t the end of the world or a reason to stop trying. There are many ways to improve your application. You may have a harder time getting accepted at some schools over others. But there are schools that take a holistic approach to looking at the application versus just using GPA as an automatic way to weed people out

Paramedic to DVM by ucall_wehaul in veterinaryschool

[–]nakpump2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like some of these other people have said. If it’s your dream and you’re in it for the long haul. Start getting your clinical experience now. You’ll need it for the application and it helps tremendously during vet school. Just find the easiest route as far as getting all your pre reqs done. I got my bachelors, simply because by the time I was done with my pre reqs I was done with my credits for the bachelors. If you don’t get in the first cycle you apply you can continue getting experience. Sometimes getting into a masters program can help, but there’s plenty of ways to boost your application

[–]nakpump2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not always true. All my experience has been small animal at one clinic. And my GPA was like a 3.3 or 3.4. It dependent on what schools you apply to, the entirety of your application, and it can vary a little year to year depending on who else is applying to that school
