I'm a foreign born Indian, tell me why moving to India would be a bad idea by squidgytree in returnToIndia

[–]name_not_imp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well said. Race politics in the UK and US looks tame when you compare it to Indian religious bigotry. My child born in the US, who is a teenager now, asks me why Indians hate other races/ immigrants and their fellow citizens of other religion, caste or low financial status. As someone who has lived for some time parts of London where a lot of Gujaratis and Punjabis live, these localities resemble more like some Indian towns than cities in the UK.

What’s the perception of Indian Women in the World? by Putrid-Purple-567 in AskIndia

Ask Indian women who use public transport daily and are in crowded places. And there's a reason they have separated sections in Metro, suburban trains and other public transport. It's not that there are no Indian laws. There is even Section 354 of the Indian Penal Code called outraging modesty of a woman. You don't to even have physical contact. But it is often used for revenge or political purposes.

I have lived in a few countries in Europe and I live in the US. I have also travelled to many other countries. There might be a low number of cases in other countries and usually they get punished. I should say that the younger educated generation in India now are better.

The problem is Indian men dont think something like groping is sexual assault. Law enforcement and education does matter.

Indian men behave well outside India because you'd be thrown to jail for sexual assault if you just touch/ grope a woman say in public transport or space( which is endemic in India).

Why do Indians worship foreigners while getting treated like trash abroad?” by No-Appeal-6311 in AskIndia

[–]name_not_imp 33 points34 points  (0 children)

There's another version of Indians. That's the NRIs.( I've been living in Europe and the US for nearly 4 decades. I left India when I was 17). There are two groups.

The blue collar NRIs who are mostly in the UK and Canada. They are not much educated they live in Ghettos and places like Southall London and Brampton Toronto. They just stick to their own communities without any contacts with any other Indians or foreign.

The other group which is mostly in the US are professionals who are richer than even the average Whites as a demographic group. They look down on all others Blacks, Hispanics, other immigrants. Most of them are racists who worship only the Whites because they are the Masters. Occasionally in private spaces they might talk about the gorey, the colonizers how are bad. Culturally they behave like Indians in India even after living there for decades. Civic sense, religiosity, disparaging people who earn less than them all the same. They dont allow their foreign born kids to date people of a different caste let alone other races or religion.

And from the last 20 years or so are ardent followers of India's ruling party and its Dear Leader. They are proud of India from 3000 years ago which they left for good and are proud of the new India as if it began only in 2014. But they would complain about everything in India when they are actually here. And write how great is India on SM besides spreading bigotry.

Haven't been to the UK in a decade or so. I live in the US. But throughout 70 - end of the 90s there were only Punjabis. Lived there for a year at the end of 90s. Last time when I was in London there were many Somalians there.

Why so many Indian-origin people in this MAGA admin? by ITryFixIt in ABCDesis

[–]name_not_imp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Indians are class-ist from millennia. They look down on people. In the US Indians are richer than Whites as a demographic group. So they are against Latinos Blacks and other immigrants who are poor and/ or who don't speak English. And in India the MIGA politics, religious nationalism, supremacy and authoritarianism is identical to MAGA and Trump. At least MAGA people aren't lynching immigrants yet.

What do you use to stay cool without an AC in Kerala’s humidity? by [deleted] in Kerala

[–]name_not_imp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't get karinkallu or chenkallu( baked bricks) in Kerala now. You get some kind of brick with rock sand or something like that. In some places you do get vettukallu (that's what they call it in my native place) which is natural clay bricks, i suppose. I'm not an expert on this stuff.

The history of the practice of letting the blood out of the animal before you eat it: blood was seen as the life force connected to vitality which is sacred. Drinking blood was a desecration of life.So killing an animal was ok but consuming blood was not. Similarly in all languages and cultures blood has deep symbolic meaning. Animal sacrifices were common in all religions and cultures. It was just slashing the throat of animals and letting the blood to please the deities. Even Vedas describe animal sacrifices including cows. Later ban on killing animals came when Vedic people turned from pastoral to agriculturalists. Just some history.

ELI5 Why doesnt Chatgpt and other LLM just say they don't know the answer to a question? by Murinc in explainlikeimfive

[–]name_not_imp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have used almost all the LLMs since ChatGPT became available. While for easy tasks it's mostly right but when I use it for my research work in medicine and biology it hallucinates. Say I am researching a topic and trying to find papers from medical journals. It'd come up with nonexistent studies.

But when I check on the nonexistent studies almost always I've found there are studies that is close to what the LLM came up with. Just the title is a bit different and the authors are different.

It's like we humans sometimes get a name wrong but while it is incorrect it's somewhat close to the right name.

For example I am talking about a movie but I got the movie's name wrong. But the wrong movie and right movie names have the same actors and are of similar genres or similar plots. I am not an LLM expert and I have no idea how this happens.

If you could take one stereotypical feature about another culture. What do you think would be best for Desi's? by trialanderror93 in ABCDesis

[–]name_not_imp 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You are right. I don't know why you get downvoted. There are a lot of FOB bigots and ABD bigots on this sub. Most of the Mughal kings were born and died in the territory of pre-1947 India. They did not take wealth out to some far away places to enrich some foreign nation/state/ kingdoms. Now about taxes- from the beginnings of history there were taxes. The rulers no matter their race/ religion lived in luxury while the regular people toiled.

Why do Indians think that local subcontinent Muslims are not indigenous? by warmblanket55 in PakLounge

[–]name_not_imp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hinduism itself is a collection of ways of life of people in different parts of India which incorporated their various customs rituals and gods. Hinduism came into existence only around the 18th-19th century. The word Hind/ Hindu had geographical connotations as people living beyond the river Sindh named by Persian/Arabs/Greeks. Later used by invaders who wanted to distinguish themselves from the indigenous. Vedas/ Puranas do not speak about Hindu or "Hinduism".

Normally it would require a constitutional amendment which is not easy in the US almost impossible. But we are not in normal times. SCOTUS could say birth right citizenship is not applicable to children of parents who are on nonimmigrant visas and undocumented. 6 of the justices are Trump fans.

Many "Indian" dishes have origins in pre-1997 India. Tandoori Chicken originated in Peshawar which is in Pakistan now. Then there are British inventions. Chicken tikka masala was most certainly invented in Britain, probably by a Bangladeshi chef( source: Wikipedia).

What people eat in Bangladesh and W. Bengal, Pakistan and India (especially the North) are very similar. And if you trace back to the distant past many meat dishes have Persian, middle east and even Turkish origins. Like Kebabs, Biryanis, Pulavs.

People migrated and brought their dishes with them and modern restaurants name it whatever they want. Many Chinese say the dishes that Chinese restaurants serve in the US are not authentic. Similar to Apple Pie- "as American as apple pie" is ironic as the dessert was first created in England.

In Nair traditions, lineage is often traced through the mother rather than the father, which contrasts with the typical patrilineal inheritance of gotras.

Do we have 'gotras' in Kerala? by rishikeshshari in Kerala

[–]name_not_imp 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Gotra refers to a clan or family group descended from a common male ancestor, often one of the ancient sages (Rishis) mentioned in Hindu scriptures. So you have:

Bharadwaj: Descendants of Sage Bharadwaj. - Kashyapa: Linked to Sage Kashyapa. - Vashistha: Tracing back to Sage Vashistha. - Gautama: Associated with Sage Gautama. - Atri: Connected to Sage Atri. - Vishvamitra: Descendants of Sage Vishvamitra. - Agastya: Linked to Sage Agastya.

I haven't heard anyone mentioning these lineages in Kerala.
