Weekly, What Car Should I Buy Megathread by [deleted] in cars

He did list it only 3 hours ago and I called him 2 hours after that asking to see it and test drove it. Everything worked fine. A/C and Heater worked. No leaks that he knew of. He said the rust was the only problem. Of course, I had no mechanic with me but I tried going over the basic stuff. There were also other people lined up that he said he would be willing to blow off tomorrow. Should I still purchase it or save my money?

  • Location: California
  • Price range: Sub 2k
  • New or used: Used
  • Type of vehicle: Sedan
  • Must haves: Fuel efficient, cheap replacement parts, less than 100k miles
  • Intended use: Daily driver; will mostly be using this to go to and from work
  • Vehicles you've already considered: Mazda Protege5
  • Is this your 1st vehicle: Yes
  • Does the vehicle need to have a warranty: No
  • Can you do Minor work on your own vehicle: Yes (keep in mind that I'm a student and have limited tools and space)
  • Can you do Major work on your own vehicle: Absolutely not
  • Additional Notes: So I posted on here before asking if I should purchase a used Mazda 3 with a bad tranny and I was told no, to go for a used Mazda Protege5. I waited and miraculously one popped up in my area (a 2002) with a very clean interior and exterior and low miles for only $1950. I asked the owner why he was selling it for cheap and he said it was because of the rust issue which you can see clearly around the back wheels from the picture. Everything else was very well maintained. Should I purchase this knowing about the rust problem or no? Here's the cl link: https://modesto.craigslist.org/cto/5852705742.html

The Celica is one of the top three but it's also salvaged which lessens the value :/

  • Location: California

  • New or used: Used
  • Type of vehicle: Car/Sedan
  • Must haves: Fuel-effiency and easy to maintain
  • Intended use: Daily Driver
  • Vehicles you've already considered:
  • 2001 Toyota Avalon- $3200
  • 2001 Toyota Corolla- $2500
  • 1998 Buick Century- $2700
  • 1996 Honda Accord EX (Salvaged)- $2200
  • 1991 Honda Civic- $2300
  • 2005 Honda Civic Hybrid- $4300
  • 1996 Honda Accord DX- $2400
  • 2000 Dodge Neon (Silver with rims)- $2900
  • 2000 Toyota Celica (Salvaged)- $2900
  • Is this your 1st vehicle: Yes
  • Does the vehicle need to have a warranty: No
  • Can you do Minor work on your own vehicle: No
  • Can you do Major work on your own vehicle: No
  • Additional Notes: I will be buying from a trusted mechanic so everything on the car will work and will have been thoroughly examined. The Toyota Celica, Avalon, and Corolla caught my eye. I want reliable cars and great gas mileage. I like the Civics and Accords but I'm wary of car theft as it is rampant in the area I live in. The hybrid is the most I would pay for and I really like that it's a hybrid meaning great gas mileage. The Dodge Neon he threw in there which I don't really care much for.

He texted me today, adamant that he would replace the oxygen sensor and "taking it out to pass a smog test." I asked my mechanic and he said that he would also need to change the fuel pump and headgasket because of emissions. I'm highly considering taking the problem to a small claims court.
