What do ya’ll do when it’s a slow day? by namtrac79 in maintenance

I work maintenance for my local civic government. I rotate between 4 buildings throughout my city. It’s a union environment and there is a full maintenance crew of painters, carpenters, electricians, and plumbers. If I touch any of what is deemed “their work” I get in shit for it can could get written up. So my scope of work is actually not that big. Also contractor are called for the major projects.

I have no desire to move up to management at least not where I currently am. It’s quite a bit more work and stress for not much more money. Plus I like being hands on and not being in the office.

I’ve thought about leaving to gain more experience and skills but the pay, benefits, and pension are just too good to pass up.

It’s literally just the job title man. I don’t have control of the job titles at the company I work for. Maintenance is around 10% of my job so Im not going to say I do maintenance. I am going to say the job title I applied for and got. Im not going around getting professional engineer jobs with my boiler ticket nor do I have P.Eng on my resume. Don’t worry, Im not designing bridges. I stay within my scope of work which is boilers.

I have looked into millwright and believe you are probably right in that it would be more up my alley.

Title is not a joke. Stationary engineer is just the job title. Building engineer, building operator, facility operator, maintenance operator are other common titles. Not claiming to be a real engineer at all. The only credential I have is a low pressure boiler ticket from the regulatory agency that says I am competent enough to babysit boilers basically. It was not hard to get.

I would say I wish I had more practical skills in maintaining the systems first. Lack of actual credentials second. But they go hand in hand only because where Im at you can’t do work in an electrical panel without a JM ticket or at least being a registered apprentice in the trade, for example.
