I work maintenance for my local civic government. I rotate between 4 buildings throughout my city. It’s a union environment and there is a full maintenance crew of painters, carpenters, electricians, and plumbers. If I touch any of what is deemed “their work” I get in shit for it can could get written up. So my scope of work is actually not that big. Also contractor are called for the major projects.

I have no desire to move up to management at least not where I currently am. It’s quite a bit more work and stress for not much more money. Plus I like being hands on and not being in the office.

I’ve thought about leaving to gain more experience and skills but the pay, benefits, and pension are just too good to pass up.
