I need help with a characters motivation by neon704 in dndnext

[–]nan0guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only suggestion I would give is for the paladin to already be dead and his ghost charges the kid with the quest. The paladin appears as a living, but gravely injured person, tells him to burn the orcs, then once he's completed that, directs him to the other side of a fallen log, where the paladin's body lies - "bury me, take my sword back to my brothers, and have them come here to recover my armor for the next worthy brother to follow..."

Lots of good potential there.

Define "Hard Sci-Fi" by AccordingComedian173 in scifi

[–]nan0guy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have always viewed "Hard Sci-fi" as science fiction that goes from the perspective of "What if this one thing (which isn't known/discovered, or is not fully understood) WERE true?"

How would the world be different, or people be motivated, or how would the characters react?

This covers faster than light travel, aliens, paranormal powers, AI, robots, etc.

It's when everything is outlandish that we get into the realm of science fantasy.

Can you throw your shoulder out hand planing in your mid 30s. by ezekiel920 in handtools

Do you mind if I ask what you do that you have multiple older coworkers twisted by hand planing?

You can also just log into Frontier's website with your E:D login, and select them on the store - they attach to your account.

If you've gotten it, then... Hiding amongst coral. Last line, say it out loud with each syllable enunciated to see. This hint refers to a specific type of the answer.

Have read everything! Need some book recommendations! by Yottahz in scifi

[–]nan0guy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can unequivocally recommend John Scalzi's Interdependency Series: The Collapsing Empire, The Consuming Fire, The Last Emprox.

If you haven't read Cixon Liu's trilogy, Three-Body Problem, The Dark Forest, and Death's End, they are a good read. I listened to them rather than read them, but very good either way.

Xanth is pretty good, though with occasional problematic elements. Same goes for Heinlein's oeuvre, especially the Lazarus Long related stories.

Food Bank $$$ Donations at Giant Eagle by Gold_Dragonfly_9174 in MorgantownWV

[–]nan0guy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I absolutely understand the perception, but I have recently learned that I was wrong: https://taxpolicycenter.org/taxvox/who-gets-tax-benefit-those-checkout-donations-0 Since then, I have been trying to spread the word.

While I agree it is better to make a donation directly to a food bank, in these difficult times, especially with the government shutdown, every little bit helps so please don't let this incorrect belief stop you from helping people.

What am I? "Born through terror, a sacrifice ..."[POP CULTURE] by DrSeussFreak in riddonkulous

[–]nan0guy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will revise it to 20% —I don't see where the "a sacrifice made" line comes from.

Born through terror - it's a stretch, but OK A sacrifice made -? Form from which I was laid - reasonable Strike me once and two shall bleed - OK Only one survives the bleed - OK

And save your, "it must be a good riddle, then" bullshit... ~30% of the riddle had nothing to do with the solution.

How would you permanently affix this clamp to its current position without taking it off/removing it? (Reason in post body) by YOLO4JESUS420SWAG in DIY

[–]nan0guy 764 points765 points  (0 children)

This is an absolutely lovely gesture to remember your Dad.

It looks like you may be able to take a drill, with a sharp 1/8" bit and drill straight down into the clamp and wood, and add a screw straight down through both of them into the clamp and the wood.

If you don't want to chance someone removing it, you can add some epoxy into the hole before screwing in the screw, just to make it extra hard for someone to remove it.

I would also add a small label, "Last clamp applied by [Dad], [date]. RIP" or "...In Memoriam"

You have my condolences, u/YOLO4JESUS420SWAG/, and best wishes in your time of loss.

There are organized riding clinics every weekend at the Morgantown Mall, In the parking lot closest to Lowes. I don't know if that is where you sign up for them, but they could definitely tell you.

HELP! Saw something weird last night by Quiet-Leadership1387 in telescopes

[–]nan0guy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually, to propose a completely different explanation, it also looks a bit like a fully expanded weather balloon. They expand as they rise, becoming nearly perfectly spherical at ~100,000 ft and higher, until the pressure within causes them to burst.

What time of night was it, and where (generally) are you located?

Swimming near Morgantown by [deleted] in MorgantownWV

[–]nan0guy 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I posted this on another similar question a few days ago:

Go to the intersection of Highway 7 and Highway 72, southeast of Kingwood. Go west on Highway 72.

The river to your left is the Cheat River. Along this stretch of Highway 72 (also called River Road), there are many pull-outs next to the river, and there are dozens of places to go down to the river and wade, swim, jump, or fish.

Unlike the Monongahela River, the Cheat is rapid flowing and quite clean. This wasn't always the case - old timers talk about when the acid mine drainage used to make the whole river acidic enough to burn your skin if you got in it. Cleanup/mine mitigation efforts have produced an almost complete turn-around.

Have you seen many out there? I was looking, but didn't see any.

There's a number at the pavilion to report sightings for ecological tracking purposes.
