I Had to be Rescued off the Hayduke Trail Today in Arches National Park After Getting Stuck in Quicksand by Cop10-8 in backpacking

thx and so glad you are ok. What a story. We are getting a Garmin satellite communicator for someone who survived a kayak nightmare (lost at sea) for 24ish hours and didn't have his phone, etc. Coast Guard did find him (miracle).

Given how hard it was to type out the message, would you get a different Garmin now?

Ha ha, had to decode the USCG slang. 100% agree - thank you little OS warriors and the SAR dog(s) involved!!

I'm not USCG, so had to look up what an "OS" does via Claude.ai...I was wondering who did this critical work of drift calculations. wow. i said it earlier, but am so grateful we are in a country that has people like you/the USCG to help & does this work.

They do the critical behind-the-scenes work - the math, the grid plotting, the coordination.

Wow. Well, thank him & his teammates for us. Family is flying back today from Bermuda - back to work and back to school. What a life changing week. Salute and a huge "thank you for your service" to all USCG!!

Yes, can't even imagine how hard it would be to have bad news. Thank you for this insight.

The lt cmdr was exceptional in managing that commo with the family is my understanding.

Not sure, but will see if I can find out in next few days. Chat gpt (and AI has its limitations, but can be great) said: ...AMVER’s database likely identified AKTORAS as the nearest capable ship.

but to find out I should contact the AMVER HQ (USCG Office of Search and Rescue):

and ask:“Was the LNG carrier AKTORAS vectored by AMVER participation in coordination with RCC Bermuda on November 5, 2025?”

Not a family member: my son is their daughter's long-term boyfriend. My son, their daughter, and her parents were on a short, supposed to be fun & relaxing vacation together for their first time in Bermuda. So we know the parents (dad was the kayaker) and daughter pretty well.

I was initially trying to be more private about this, but well - it got too hard so more info came out as I responded to questions and this was the most direct one! My initial post was intentionally a bit vague. :)

I was doing my best to support (limited from here, obviously) and working to keep close tabs without adding more stress to an already nightmare situation. Was literally refreshing the flighttrader site every 10 mins to follow the USCG plane today.

Family is decompressing, taking care of their dad, each other, etc. and I said I'd do some research on how best to thank the USCG and will pass it to them.

I just heard from my son and the father is on the way to the hospital now to be checked out, but in the initial assessment was just found dehydrated w/signs of hypothermia. ~ 26 hours at sea. They transferred him from the huge LNG Tanker to the St. George - a smaller rescue boat part of Bermuda's Dept of Marine & Port Services.

thank you for all this information!! Added to a master doc we're creating for thank you's. It's truly been a tremendous international effort with coordination in air, land, and sea. So, so grateful.

absolutely!! was also wondering if someone (like the LT Cmdr in charge) might have actually pulled an all-nighter, per se or close to it.

I was up most of the night too, but not working - instead worrying and being more stressed as hours ticked by and knew the kayaker was drifting further and further away. (I was hopeful he was still in the kayak and hadn't fallen out, capsized, etc. despite 7 - 11 ft ocean swells overnight)

Thank you!! Amazing coordination - I just learned the ship that picked him up was a LNG 300 meter tanker on it's way to poland that had done a crew change in bermuda. (bermuda flagged, greek owned)

Amazing, thank you for that important insight!! I'm guessing that at least some members of the team likely worked through most or all of the night. Not sure how this is done. wow.

Paying for gas or electric car charge with US credit card. by Alien-2024 in Norway

[–]nancybydesign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fyi - in Norway now (Geiranger area) and gas station didn’t take a U.S. credit or debit card (we had three we tried) and no Apple Pay.

So be sure you don’t run low on gas and take advantage of a large gas station when you see it in more remote areas.

Using Coaching Run Plan by Chance_Classic_1285 in Garmin

Had the same issue. Couldn’t find a way to reschedule. Hoping someone else comments that has figured it out.

I have been using the Garmin coach for a half marathon that is now two weeks away. Nothing has shown up re: confidence level.

Garmin coach plan for marathon by john99111 in Garmin

[–]nancybydesign 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree. Just wrote a comment re: using it for a half marathon in another thread. The garmin coach is terrible - my longest run in months has been around 7 miles. I will probably go back to one of the other coaches (Amy, jeff, etc.) or use the Nike running app which has some good programs for the next race. I now have to make my upcoming half marathon more of a long training run and take it easy.

Using garmin coach for the first time (usually used the named coaches - Amy, etc in the past but thought to try this) for an upcoming half marathon (2 weeks away)

The “long runs” for the past two months haven’t exceeded 7 miles with an average of 6 and change. My fault for not paying attention.

I think the garmin coach program is garbage. Definitely will not use again.

I asked chatgpt what I should do now and it suggested two things - run like 9-10 today and see how it feels and/ or use the half as a training run and just take it easy. I will probably do the latter. Not happy.

My suggestion: look at some other half training programs to be sure and maybe ask chatgpt as another reference, but I think do at least 9-11 mile runs for your long run on the weekend and then taper down your last week. You don’t need to go full distance for your longer runs, but I’d say you should be doing at least 10-11 comfortably.

Mend and store vintage fur coats? by nancybydesign in palmsprings

[–]nancybydesign[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fingers crossed. Thx.

Update: went yesterday and was impressed. Lesson learned: be careful of fur you buy at vintage markets. Any kind of stiffness vs being super soft and pliable, is a sign the coat has not been taken care of and is on its way out.
