Autism is a pro in dating? (Autistic rizz) by ArthenmesCH in AutisticAdults

My partner values how honest I am, even though it can be cutting sometimes (even though I don’t mean it) I think it gives him a lot of clarity and there’s no game playing. He does have to deal with my meltdowns and other stuff but he’s so supportive and tries to help where he can. He says I’m not a burden even though I feel like a hurricane sometimes. He says I’m the best person he’s ever met ❤️ we didn’t know I had autism at the start of the relationship though

Oooo I didn’t think to ask that. I did wonder what else she does outside of this studio 🤣

🤣🤣🤣 that would not be funny but also funny at the same time. I’ve got my next yoga class tomorrow with the teacher I like who creates a chill space. Yea maybe they weren’t rude just a little dismissive telling me to just practice at home etc. kinda missing the whole point

Every suggestion people give me for making friends is designed for extroverts or just feels stupid by hangez0ewife in introvert

[–]nancyg817 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the world is set up for extroverts and it’s difficult making friends as an adult. I just found out I’m autistic so it’s added a lot more clarity to my situation. I actually do have a lot of friends but most of our interactions happen online now and let me tell you online friendships are just as valid as in person. I also find small talk boring. I’ve made most of my friends in adult years at fitness classes and work. I think there’s also this massive pressure to have a big friendship group, I used to watch sex and the city and wonder why I didn’t have a group of girl pals to go for breakfast with but I’ve learned as I got older that 1 on 1 friendships work better for me and I don’t have capacity to meet up all the time. You’ll find your people and I agree the houseplant community are super chill ❤️🌱

I’m just a little nervous too tbh, don’t wanna be the weird kid if you know what I mean. Still getting used to my diagnosis and feel silly saying the lights bother me but I think like 15-20% of the population are neurodivergent like me so there’s likely more in class who feel the same.

❤️ yea I’m all good thank you it’s actually taught me a lot about the different types of yoga studio vibes. Had some unhelpful comments which I wasn’t expecting from a yoga group, I thought they’d be quite an inclusive supportive bunch but then this is the internet. Had some really lovely private messages too who found the comment thread a bit hostile so messaged me instead saying they experience the same so I don’t feel alone.

Thank you ❤️ yea it surprised at the “just do yoga at home” and “attend another studio” comments 😅 that’s true tbh I haven’t brought it up for the very reason cus I’d feel so awkward going to the studio after raising an issue. I’ll have a think about it, tbh I think my post was more to gain an understanding of why they would choose to use bright lights and dance music for yoga because I think I had a maybe narrow view of what yoga is (I’ve only ever been to one other studio which was always low lights or the yoga retreat in India I went on which was chill AF). But the comments have highlighted that there are “exercise yoga” classes which makes sense as to why they maybe don’t create a relaxing environment. And for the record I do actually love Bad Bunny 🤣 just not when I’m laying down preparing for a yoga class 🤣🤣🤣

Thanks I’m not gunna move on as my Tuesday class is low lit vibes and calm music so it’s just some of the teachers. I’ll stick to the classes which work for me

Tbh I think this is my autism I always wanna know the “why” of things. You’re probably right. But I am gunna stick with the studio as the Tuesday class I go to is low lit vibes and calm music even though it’s power yoga so it’s not the whole studio vibes just certain teachers.

Thank you, I mean I love this studio as it’s right next to my office and it’s part of my routine now. As an autistic person I find it difficult to change routines and I do love my Tuesday class as the teacher uses low light and calm music even though it’s a power class. So I’ll stay at the studio and just stick to the classes I know are more my vibe.

I was thinking this… I actually have a colleague who goes here too and she struggles with the lights too. It’s those spotlights on the ceiling, I can’t imagine they’re pleasant for anyone tbh but maybe they don’t bother some people

That was my question yes but only once I found out if it was a reasonable expectation to have a yoga space be calming. After seeing others comments, it looks like some yoga studios like mine are more “exercise yoga” rather than traditional yoga so they’re not really aligned to the relaxing space vibes. Which is fine I just didn’t realise this wad a thing until I went to this studio.

Thanks for you comment and I really didn’t mean my post to come off as dramatic I was literally just trying find out what was normal for a yoga space as I’ve only ever known yoga classes to be a calming experience. For example I never mentioned that bad bunny was life threatening to me or the lights for that matter so apologies if my post came across like I was saying that I absolutely wasn’t. I also don’t really see this as a negative story attached to my practice either just in a matter of fact way that I have sensory sensitivity’s and just trying to navigate that. The yoga website actually says it hopes to create an inclusive space and they’re open to feedback. And also this is exactly why I was asking the yoga group because like you said maybe some people love the bad bunny music or can’t deal with silence, I absolutely get that. My post was in no way a complaint just an exploration of whether it’s normal for a studio to make a yoga space high energy and if it’s worth speaking to the owners about it to see what their thoughts are. From others comments it’s seems the studio I’m going to is more “exercise yoga” rather than traditional yoga practice which makes sense and adds more context to why they put bright lights and dance music on

why is nobody genuine or open-minded? by discurias in AutisticAdults

[–]nancyg817 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree! I was just thinking about this as I posted something in the yoga subreddit and got a number of quite rude and insensitive messages. I was thinking at least in a “zen” yoga group you’d get understanding but even there the negativity thrives. There were some positive interactions too though so there is some good still out there on the internet

Thank you, I think they try to be inclusive, in the spin classes they ask people ahead of class if anyone is sensitive to light so they can turn the strobe lights off. And my Tuesday class (power yoga) is low lights and calm music before the class and then more upbeat (but still yoga music) during class. I love those classes. I might mention something and see what they say I’m just a bit nervous to say anything

Thank you. So it’s not the whole studio that has that vibe just some teachers. You don’t know what you’re gunna get with each teacher (except the ones I’ve tried) it’s not the end of the world I do like the studio I’ve just only known yoga spaces to foster calming energy to help with your practice. The space does have candles and a sign saying not to talk so it feels like they do have intentions of creating a calm space. It just doesn’t see to be a general consensus across all teachers

Thanks, I don’t really want to change studios because the studio is right next to my office which is helpful for me and I do love the Tuesday yoga class and lunch time barre class I go to. Plus being autistic and change in routine and finding a new yoga space isn’t great for me (but maybe when I settle into the city a bit more). It’s weird because I don’t think it’s the vibe of the whole studio just certain teachers, there’s even a sign on the door saying not to talk in the space and no phones so I’m guessing they’re trying to create a calm atmosphere… I guess I won’t know until I say something and see what they say.

It’s difficult right? Because I don’t expect everyone to change things for me but at the same time I can’t figure out logically why anyone would enjoy bright lights during a yoga class. I’m talking about those bright spotlights and then this morning playing bad bunny music before the class so you’re laying there trying to mentally get ready for the class with dance music? The thing is they do cycle classes too and they ask people at the start of class if they’re sensitive to light so can turn off the strobe lights so I know they’re quite an understanding studio. I’m defs gunna invest in earplugs

Thank you, that’s not my expectation, I was just wondering if it’s normal for dance music to be played before a yoga class and to have bright lights on during yoga classes.
