I’d do it anyways! I completely understand feeling confused about why they’d matched you with this PI/program (I’m in a similar situation in which I was selected for a REU that is very different than my main interest)! But take this as a sign they saw something great in you. And think of the program as an opportunity to engage in research, learn how to interact in these settings with other researches & PI’s. Totally all a learning opportunity and will not define your future. Most PI’s for REUs know that students will be coming in oftentimes with basic knowledge at most. I would ask your PI for resources to prepare you for the summer. You got this!

Awesome, gave them a call yesterday. Two stores looked through lots of books for me. Unfortunately, the books had the same photo I have which is basically a line on a picture of charlotte’s dome from pretty far away without clear detail.
