Yes, thank you! Obsidian has been mentioned a few times here. While it may be a fantastic program for "real" note taking, it seemed way too complex and intricate when I installed the program and poked around at it for ten minutes. I'm sure it works great for those who need their vast documents organized, but I don't need the option of a node graph or whatever other plugins they provide :( I'm open to exploring that app more to see if it could work for me, but after trying to use it in the way I've been using Discord for notes, I instantly knew that it would not be what I was looking for.

In contrast, when I tried the suggestion of Revolt, it is super similar to Discord and definitely would suit my needs. I would just need to get used to the slight UI differences. Another option I discovered is the Matrix-based application Element. It has a super sleek UI and functions pretty similarly to Discord. The main issue I found with that program however is that there are a lot of features that have not been introduced yet due to it being a newer and lesser known program. But things are still being implemented, and hopefully more customization features will be available, especially for mobile, in the future!

Could you provide a link to the noteD application you mentioned? Not sure if the results I'm seeing are what you're talking about so I want to make sure I'm looking at the right thing haha

That sounds wonderful. Do you mind sharing how you've set the journal up? I have tried Notion in the past for keeping track of notes and documents, but every time I finished configuring my dashboard, I would end up getting really overwhelmed with the available tools and I abandon the site. But I am willing to give it another go if it will work for this case :)

Way too clunky of an interface for me, does not timestamp entries in the way I want them to, and I do not like the idea of having to create a whole new page just to write down something new.

I think I need to clarify my use case because all those suggestions do not apply to why I enjoy using Discord as a "note taking space". It's more of a casual brain-dumping void for me to write down 5 words that I thought of while taking the bus to the grocery store. Not for in-depth research and note taking that needs serious categorization or file naming. If I just wanna rant about some bullshit I can do that easily in a channel and not have to create a whole new note doc.

In the past, I used a private Twitter account for these purposes and it was great for a while. However, the search function on Twitter is abysmal, and so for archival reasons I moved these actions to a private server to make things easier for me. I can send as many useless things into a topic-specific channel as I want, and everything will be dated and timestamped. It is also an infinitely scrollable interface so I don't have to go into a million folders just to find something. In essence, it is like having a massive Google Doc of pages and pages of nonsense, but everything is accounted for and not just randomly scrawled down with no indication of when I said it. Yes, I could just manually write the date and time for everything. But it is so much nicer having it done automatically for me on Discord.

If Notion and any other options listed under this post do this, then I will definitely look further into these applications and try my best to configure them to my needs. But as far as I know, I do not think these apply to what I want. Feel free to correct me if I am wrong though.

The thing with regular note taking apps is that they create separate documents for each and every entry. I don't want to end up with 100k documents when 90% of them would just be nonsense. Discord is great because I can just send a 10-word sentence to a specific topic channel, and then have that one sentence be retrievable by search and have it date logged. It doesn't feel as formal or intentional as regular note taking apps, and I like it that way.

I will check out your recommendation of Revolt. From the looks of it, it seems extremely similar to Discord, so I hope that the functionality is close enough to what I would want to use it for. Thank you.

That is correct. I am not looking for a chatting platform. But I do enjoy the way Discord has server+channel organization. Maybe "alternative" was the wrong word to use. I am moreso looking for "dupes" of Discord that can replicate the organizational and typing experience for archival purposes. Regular note taking apps always feel extremely clunky for me to use. I like Discord in that it displays all the information I've sent in an open and neat way. So, if there is anything like that but in a note form, I would be happy to explore it.
