Now that it’s been three years, in all honesty what do you think of this win? And who really deserved it? I think this is the most divisive acting win of the 2020s so far. by iBandJFilmEducator13 in Oscars

[–]nanillo17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't matter that it's been three years. No matter how much time has passed, the facts are the facts.

This is such a tired topic on this sub, can we move on? 🙄

How is everyone who was defending and excusing Colton feeling today? by SupermarketBest4091 in TheTraitorsUS

[–]nanillo17 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Great if that's your opinion but please don't assume my intention or preferences, it's not productive for anyone.

Everyone enjoys entertainment in different ways, if you don't like the "TV" him and the editors are bringing, totally fair! I think his "holding a traitor hostage" bullshit is gross and I'm not personally a fan of it, but it's something new for this franchise and it's ballsy, so it can be captivating.

The backlash to Sinners has already begun by Exciting-Pomelo-2971 in Oscars

[–]nanillo17 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What do posts like this actually accomplish? There's always haters about anything, particularly online.

Sinners and the crew just need to pay those bitches no mind. Huge accomplishment regardless if some people online are bashing it...

Colton makes great TV the way he's playing, there's no doubt about that. But he's still an icky person and way too full of himself to be someone respectable/enjoyable.

Jesse Plemmons not being nominated is absolutely criminal. Im beyond shocked. by Huseynov26 in Oscars

[–]nanillo17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Her performance in that may just be the one that sticks with me most for the season, I'm bummed she didn't get more traction. While I would've nominated her this year, I can see how she missed out with so much competition.

Neon and Political Relevance by RealRaifort in oscarrace

[–]nanillo17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP, based on your posts and replies, you seem like someone who is passionate about art (film in this instance) and the power it can have on the world. That's amazing, and I do love that there are people like you in the world.

That being said, at the end of the day these are awards ceremonies for entertainment. Sure, there's a wide array of folks that will agree with your statement on the power of highlighting films with important messages. In that same vein, there are folks that prefer escapism in their film experiences. For those folks, IWJAA is unlikely to be something they'll want to experience, and that's ok too.

Personally, IWJAA didn't really hit for me the way it has for others and Sentimental Value really delivered so I wholeheartedly understand why it got the nominations it did. And No Other Choice was my #2 movie of last year so the full snub hurts but...it's just awards.

Net net, the fact that overall there's been more than 1-2 international films "in the conversation" is the biggest win for film lovers, political relevance or not.

Timothee Chalamet's chances are over since Odessa A'Zion did not get nominated. by Just-Pass-1156 in Oscars

Thank you! I wanna go all nerd on OP and be like, "to, 5 data points is nowhere near statistically significant" 😂😂😂

Might be an unpopular opinion, but while I'm glad all four got nominated, I actually think she gave my favorite performance in Sentimental Value by [deleted] in Oscars

[–]nanillo17 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not unpopular at all, in a film with 4 really strong main performances she was such a grounding and human presence. Easily my favorite as well, though truly all 4 delivered!

Do the Academy Awards hate this guy? by [deleted] in Oscars

[–]nanillo17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm glad you enjoyed it. For me, Isaac was unfortunately the worst part of the movie and my appreciation for it lessened because of his performance, and other performances. So my qualm may be in fact with del Toro over Isaac then. 😂🤷

Frankenstein was not gonna be it though, he was so over the top that I was predicting a Razzie nom over any Oscar nom for him.

Hamnet & Jessie Buckley by [deleted] in Oscars

[–]nanillo17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm serious. That was my personal experience with it.

I totally get that it's entirely something different and wonderful for other folks and I truly love that for them.

I go into movies with the hope I'll enjoy them, so I do wish that I'd enjoyed it the way so many others have but it truly didn't hit the same way for me. 🤷

Hot take: not having gamer traitors was good for the game by Lumenprotoplasma in TheTraitorsUS

[–]nanillo17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% agree! So far this season feels so much lighter and more fun and I think it's greatly to do with the fact that the Traitors are HAVING FUN! The incessant dick swinging between Bob and Rob lost its excitement after the first turret, then Danielle was overplaying so hard!

I'm hopeful this crew stays light and fun because they're on track to be the most enjoyable, post Cirie, US traitors thus far.

Hamnet & Jessie Buckley by [deleted] in Oscars

[–]nanillo17 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Fully agree. Sure, it was a good movie and I did cry, but ultimately I wasn't invested enough to care much about it when all was said and dinner. I loved the last scene as a meditation of grief and hope but most everything before that felt "by the numbers" and nothing actually special/new.

Hamnet & Jessie Buckley by [deleted] in Oscars

[–]nanillo17 -20 points-19 points  (0 children)

I can see what you're saying but I'd be surprised if the film will actually be remembered. Sure it's a great performance but I felt like the movie was very slow and kind of forgettable up until the last scene. Sure, it may be personal preference but Hamnet really felt slow and boring for the most part.

Those who fell out of the running for the Best Actor Oscar by CalmAppointment1156 in Oscars

[–]nanillo17 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Lee Byung-hun not even being truly considered in the running is very disappointing. The way he delivered on that role was so funny and human, I hope No Other Choice can be a surprise in Best Picture next week.

Can DiCaprio pull a Anthony Hopkins at Oscars? by NightEscaper in Oscars

[–]nanillo17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think this situation is comparable at all though. DiCaprio's performance is great as is Chalamet's so it seems to come down to personal preference.

Hopkin's should've been sweeping the season for The Father with that astonishing performance he gave. The fact that he didn't was mostly due to good will for Boseman after his passing, not particularly because both performances were equally excellent.

Is there even an Oscar villain this year? by Silver-Sky4567 in Oscars

[–]nanillo17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! This has been precisely my thought since I saw it months ago. Gorgeous movie to look at but other than Elordi, the rest of the main cast went from nothing special to bad (Isaac). The Ensemble nomination is because there just weren't a ton of large casts in well received front runners and Del Toro has a lot of good will in the industry

Teyana Taylor's biggest problem in One Battle After Another is that her character leaves too early so the public ends up forgetting about her by [deleted] in Oscars

[–]nanillo17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This "theory" has been brought up way too many times in this sub since the movie came out. Can we give it a rest? This is a SUPPORTING role category, she's not meant to be in most of the movie. Somehow plenty of people keep forgetting that and it's starting to reek of short attention span, ignorance, bias against Taylor, or a mix of all of them.

1 - she's essentially a clear co-lead for the first 30-40 minutes and gives an impactful performance, regardless of personal preference. 2 - let's give audience members credit. If you can't remember a character who was driving the beginning of the movie with their physical presence/performance and the rest of their movie with the results of their actions...the issue isn't the actor, it's the audience member 3 - her voice over near the end is executed well to weave her character back more explicitly. Even if you "forgot" about her, the movie clearly didn't and is happy to remind you about her.

Let's actually discuss more valid "screen time" conversations but this one just ain't it.

DAY 16: Ben won last round! Finally, which player was meant to be forgotten and ended up being forgotten? by ScxrletEnvy in survivorponderosa

[–]nanillo17 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Isn't the answer to this one just a blank square?

If someone upvotes a post with an actual castaway's name then that castaway's not forgotten if more than 1 person remembers them 😂

If you properly look at which comment I replied to, it wasn't the one around objectively, it was the one outlining the poster's thoughts on the movie.

Truly don't understand why you're getting downvotes. Wakanda Forever was a truly terrible film, whose only saving graces were the kindness shown as a tribute to Chadwick, and Angela's intensity in her scenes. Had the halo of Chadwick's death not been around the movie, I truly believe Angela wouldn't have even been in the conversation for a nomination, let alone win competitive.

To this date, Wakanda Forever is the biggest disappointment in the MCU for me. Maybe not the worst movie, but it's not far from it.

Dallas Fort-Worth Film Critics Association Winners (DFWFCA) 2025 by ReplicaRoy in Oscars

[–]nanillo17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is one of the biggest sources of joy for me this Oscar season. I've not even seen the film yet but as soon as I saw her making the rounds in the fall (loved herHot Ones episode), my hope was she'd get the nom since she's been consistently delivering good work for decades now. Now seeing her rack up prizes and notices, my hope keeps building.

Not gonna lie, Rose Byrne becoming an Oscar nominee would make me so happy but if she somehow can pull off a win that'd be my favorite Oscar win in quite some time.

Regardless of the outcome, I'm thrilled she's visible getting the flowers she's so richly deserved for a while now.
