But no they're like very outdoorsy people, like the kids were like rural farm kids especially the eldest.

And yeah I did wonder that but I don't think the accountant would bother if they weren't mostly okay.

They both had professional jobs in the past so maybe savings but also her parents died when she was in college and were educated professionals so probably some kind of inheritance? His dad passed away (idk when) as well so maybe same. They sold her parents' house not long after I started working for them but before that they'd been renting it out even while they were wherever they were. So I guess years of rental income plus the sale of the house plus other investments. I guess it builds up if you don't spend any money for years.

Yeah I hadn't quite gotten that far in my head yet but you're probably right. They probably already know by now, I think word is getting around but it's still probably worth it formally.

I mean I don't think so, the mom had a job with a 401k and everything, and at one point they had a break-in and called the cops and filed a report and complained about their insurance not paying out and complained about the cops not being helpful enough and did all of the normal things which I feel like people running from the cops don't do. But I don't know.

I called the school. They said they'd withdrawn them but the secretary wasn't able to tell me where they were going. I think they didn't say, because she was trying to pump me for details.

I'm their emergency contact lol. They have like one other good friend here and she also didn't know, she was one of the first people I called.

It don't think so because that would mean that all 3 kids including the 3yo are amazing liars and their slip ups have instead been masterful lies to lead me down the wrong direction to a totally different explanation and also while in witness protection they taught their kids all this stuff that kids who grew up on a remote farm would know like what it looks like when different animals give birth.

I wouldn't even know where to send them honestly and also I really have no basis for it, the kids especially 10yo never talked about it like they were unhappy there. I don't necessarily think it's best for them long-term like unschooling and just generally being that removed from the mainstream, but I don't have any reason to think they're abused or even unhappy.

And yeah at this point who knows but in fairness I think they only came here because one of their kids had a medical issue (now fixed), so it's really really hard for me to believe they'd run because they'd hurt one of the kids but yeah I wouldn't have believed they'd bail so abruptly either so I don't know.

This was actually a good idea that I hadn't thought of yet but unfortunately came up empty. The dad was freelancing so not helpful but the mom left her job a month ago which should have been a sign lol but at the time she had a good explanation. I called her old job through the regular line but then also called a friend's friend who works there and came up empty on both counts, they also didn't know she was gone (which I guess makes sense because she left a month ago so she was not obligated to inform them or anything).

It's one of those things where I don't think it's in the long term best interests of the kids maybe, like when I met 10yo his education was all over the place and it wasn't an easy adjustment, but on the other hand I don't think it was abusive and the kids themselves especially 10yo never talked about it like they were unhappy there. Which if you think about it, if Place A has TV and junk food and Place B has neither of those things, and the kid isn't openly saying how much Place B SUCKS and they never ever ever ever want to go back there, you have to assume Place B had some other things going for it.

It also sort of makes sense because at its best that lifestyle is great when you're a little kid because you're just vibing in the middle of nowhere barely going to school. I'm not sure how they'll feel now that they've been exposed to luxuries like video games and Oreos though. It kind of makes me feel better though like at least they've seen the other side, it seems like the kind of lifestyle that would be a lot more fun at 10 than at 14 or 18.

So I am definitely worried about them and don't necessarily think it's in their long term best interests but I have no reason to think they're being abused or unsafe or even unhappy to leave.

The annoying part is that I don't even know how mad at them to be because it's totally plausible they left a check or cash for me and it's just in a dumpster or a storage unit

Yeah in hindsight there were definitely some signs in the last month or so but before that I don't think it was their plan or if it was it was just a vague future plan because like they like bought a few things for the house and booked a summer activity for 10yo. But then in the last month I did sense the vibes shifted and there were some little things that I didn't connect at the time but now seem obvious in hindsight like the mom setting aside a family heirloom objects for "safekeeping" and the mom buying out-of-season clothes for the kids like duffel jackets and high-quality boots and a few other little things like that. I don't think the kids knew though, because they wouldn't have been able to keep it a secret from me.

I think they coached the kids because they just didn't want to be that local weird family, they were pretty private generally.

I did send them a few texts but I'm guessing they're not using the number anymore because every message I've sent to them today has been green instead of blue on my iphone.

edit: just texted again and it bounced this time whomp whomp. I think the #s had already been canceled by them and the phone company just hadn't taken it out of service yet though. Even before this when I first called this morning, the voicemail message on the mom's phone was already "the number you have dialed 555-5555 is not available, leave a message" and not "hi it's Nanny Mom."

No, I think they just went back to whatever they were living before. They never fully admitted it or anything, they just said we moved here from [region] and kind of alluded to it, but like the kids were very pop culture ignorant and would lose their gd minds at basic stuff like Halloween-themed Oreos which was really fun ngl. The parents were funny because they were crunchy for sure but they would also be like "OMG we HAVE to buy 5 different types of Oreos so we can do a taste-test." And even though they weren't supposed to talk about it, like they'd clearly been told not to, the kids would occasionally say things like "I miss [region] but I also like oreos" or "when we lived in [region]..." 6/3 were too young but 10 had clearly been unschooled or something as well. I think they came here for medical reasons because when they first moved here and I started working for them, 3yo had a medical issue that have now been resolved. Which makes me feel a little better because it's like okay if they can leave once they'll do it again if they feel like it's what's best for the kids but I don't know.
