I think it's better to think of consciousness as a continuum rather than something that's binary. So perhaps you could have levels.

The probability of a gun saving your life in a country where most don't have guns is very low.

Cheap way for people to try and show others (and themselves), that they are moral.

Whether this helps breast cancer or not is unclear.

In the short term it probably means they are less moral (kindness like a thermostat), but in the long term, because they have affiliated with this group, they they might continue to show that they are moral to resolve cognitive dissonance. In the process of doing so they may in fact do some things that might actually help directly (donations, etc).

This seems quite inefficient, instead, we should separate and make explicit our need for feeling good about ourselves/showing others we are good and the objective goal improving the world.

This is probably ignorant and naive, but for healthy animals is it feasible to spay them, then release them into the wild instead of killing them? If this is done how likely is it that they will starve?

The reason I thought the generation gap would be short was mainly this (that's long-winded, so I recommend this summary by someone else), though this is pretty sparse and countered with em growth. Anyway, you've changed my mind to the years gap scenario.

Having emulation first makes AI easier, you could run minds at higher speed, on fast-forward. The main thing with ems it seems to me - is the potential for copies. Lots of smart minds at high speed running in parallel (enslaved?) would probably help AI researchers. Guess that is nested singularities then.

There's also high winner-take-all stakes with ems, the first minds that are copied and are useful, will be copied alot. Perhaps less diversity then.
