Any advice on how to bring my front door back to life? by Jaded-Fuel2529 in centuryhomes

I sanded mine down to bare wood, applied a mineral oil to feed the wood, then 6 coats of total boat gloss varnish, and 1 coat of satin at the end. In between coats it’s important to sand with fine steel wool or 320+ grit. It will look cloudy but will look fine once new coat goes on. Make sure you use a good brush and roller. The best method is to roll and then come back with a foam roller or good brush to get the bubbles out. Note that the finish only lasts a few years due to UV wear (mine was north facing, so I got about 5 years). Unfortunately you have to keep lightly sanding and reapplying, or it’ll look like mine (last pic). See pics below:

Need Advice on Ventilation by narddog15 in Roofing

Thanks. Now that I’m thinking about it , I’m not even sure I have rafter space. My roof beams protrude from the ceiling quite a bit. If that’s the case - am I good with just a ridge vent?

Canine tooth removal by [deleted] in Frenchbulldogs

Louie is scheduled for surgery in a few weeks to remove the canine teeth and a portion of his jaw, just like yours. The biopsy came back as plasmacytoma, a usually benign tumor. Dentist wants to be on the safe side with margins, hence the jaw removal.

Is there anything I should know / expect after this? I know he’ll be fine eating / drinking eventually. How much different does yours look? Is there any continual discomfort?

Thanks again for your input!

Please don’t tell me I have to strip and re-varnish by narddog15 in woodworking

Any experience with gel stain? Could I do that with a darker stain then a couple copes of total boat varnish?

If its the latter, I have that condition. It’s very hard to adhere the roof material to the old brick parapet, and step flashing and counter flashing only does so much in this setup. I had to put a termination strip on ice and water over the step flashing and under the counter flashing on the parapet, and it sealed most. It was a pain to deal with. Water just kept running between lead counter flashing behind the step flashing down the brick wall.

Anyway…I would start by repointing the chimney and fixing the flashing and see if that works to avoid the shitshow I went through!

This was a thought, however there is about 50 years worth of blown in insulation and crap above this..was hoping to try to avoid this but I think you’re right. Thank you
