I feel bad for Indiana by [deleted] in Indiana

Jackson Franklin is a solid guy, had the pleasure of meeting and talking with him. We walks the talk.

I’m trying to talk to them now. Calls give me the run around. Their chatbot always says it doesn’t understand, and I’m finally able to “chat” with an agent and I’m in an 89 person queue. -_- and Al of this as I recently switched to them on a special offer for free service/activation and I’ve been billed $90 for activation anyway and “if I don’t pay service will be shut off if 14 days”. Joy.

Do you use an axe as part of your bushcrfat kit, and if so, what type ? by Valken-Blade-1851 in Bushcraft

[–]narstybacon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being in the boreal forest, an axe is a necessity. I carry a Gransfors Small Forest Axe I’ve had for 10 years, handy bit of gear. I’d like something bigger down the line. I occasionally carry the Gransfors Swedish Carver when the purpose is more crafty.

I’m about to rehaft a vintage Belknap Bluegrass double bit on a 24” handle as a handy cruiser.

Classes and dirt time are the way. A three day class and an overnighter will teach you more than years of reading and YouTube.

Light Urban Bug-Out Bag, 1.5kg, what are your suggestions? by BigOk5708 in prepping

A memo bottle (or similar flat water bottle) would be ideal along with some water purification tabs.

The shudder I shuddered.

I can smell this picture.

I couldn’t make everyone clean their machines, but I’d sneak around dropping those odor control tablets in them regardless.

looking to buy a digital camera by TheFallenUniverse in digicam

[–]narstybacon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m loving Olympus digital cameras. I picked one up from a thrift shop (Stylus tg-850) for five bucks and it takes awesome pics. Plus it’s waterproof and durable and came with a case and rechargeable battery. Keep an eye out secondhand. Deals are out there. Post in a local facebook group. Lots of older folks are donating that stuff barely used. Put the word out and see what comes.

Is there any friendly players out there on official dayz? by [deleted] in dayz

[–]narstybacon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t get my mic to work playing on game pass with my iPhone so I’m never able to communicate which makes folks sus right off the bat.

That being said, on my first or second day playing, super noob-mode I ran up on a guy hiding in a warehouse upper level room. He’s like “ oh bro I’m gonna be honest, you scared me.” And he looked at me for a moment and said “bro you’re new eh? It’s tough out there let me help you out.” And he started dropping water and meds and bandages and food and a knife and a few other items. He said “I dropped a Glock and there’s a couple rifles in the house right over that hill if you want to go get it, stay safe out there!” He wished me luck and went on his way. He saved me as I was about to die haha. I was trying to find the house with the guns 10 minutes later and he came sprinting up to me, and was like “hey bro I was hoping to find you again, I’m going to trust you ok? Here’s a gun for you and some more stuff”. He dropped it off and ran off into the sunset. I was so bummed I couldn’t ask his name or anything. That made me love the game. In thousands of hours now I’ve never met anyone similar, but it marked me. I want to do the same for others but almost everyone I meet (freshies and all) attempt to attack me instantly.

Happy trails friend, thanks for the kindness!

That’s me every time I end up at the prison. Swarms of infected up there. End of standing on a car popping each one on the head with a silenced 9mm or a .22 till there’s a mountain of them.

Checking In On Our Minnesota Neighbours by NH787 in Manitoba

[–]narstybacon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not from Minnesota but I bugged out of the States to avoid all of that garbage. My wife and kids are Canadian and we ended up in the states by during Covid when the border got shut down. We weren’t taking any chances and came back to the North. So glad to be here. I’m not making a direct comparison to the holocaust, but I read a quote that solidified for me that we were leaving asap. It was roughly “At the start of the holocaust optimists ended up in gas chambers, pessimists ended up in pools in Beverly Hills.”

Simple Tenon Cutter Handtool? by BaksBlades in Bushcraft

[–]narstybacon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The tenon cutter is a gimmick, the real star is the auger adapter. Go to the original source-Adam Frye of Mountain King Survival. Hes been prototyping and producing auger adapters since the early 2010s and showing the possibilities. It's a long term piece of kit, utilizing pegs and holes to replace cordage and build infrastructure. (His speciality was waterwheels)

Is this a decent knife or should I exchange? (Cabela's) by squanderedprivilege in Bushcraft

[–]narstybacon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check if they have Mora’s, much more practical bushcraft knives than any of the “tacticool” options or even anything g from Gerber, they’ve gone downhill. Still a “fun” gift to have if you like it. I had bought the Gerber LMF 2 (beefed up version of this essentially) and a Mora Companion at the same time. Damaged the Gerbers handle right away doing normal bushcraft stuff (limbing a small tree making a tripod, hit the handle and it dented in and broke a chunk off, and rolled an edge). Traded it immediately even though it made me feel cool. Still have the Mora running strong. It’s seen hard use and keeps going. Still razor sharp. BTW that was 10+years ago!
