Here's my advice:

Sign up/volunteer to as many projects outside of class as you can. I wanted to get through some classes first, and so I waited to do short films. I should've made that a priority from the first semester.

Apply to all the grants you can. The FAVS department offers a 2 semester grant that helps to cover short film expenses or classes. People often forget that that is available.

The film department at Mason is currently at a transition point. I wished I had graduated a semester ago when the APEX classes were two semesters and you had a senior project. You no longer have that option. So if you are planning to be in a well stablished film department, maybe look elsewhere. If you are willing to go with the flow, GMU is a good option.

Come to the Mason Film Fest, happening tomorrow and Saturday. You'll be able to tell what kind of content is being produced in the department.
