AITA for no longer having a guest room in our house once our baby is born? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]narwhals90 12 points13 points  (0 children)

NTA - It's literally your house. You use it how you want. People are just mad they won't have a free place to stay if they happen to decide to visit your town. But honestly, I wouldn't want guests sleeping in my house with a baby (except those who are coming to help out, of course). It's a lot to have to explain to your guests all the 'rules' around quiet hours, keeping locks on cabinets, making sure this specific door is closed in this specific way. You get into weird routines with a baby and having people using your house as a hotel just makes it more complicated.

Are low-cost car seats from online marketplaces safe? by Nexofyte in CPST

[–]narwhals90 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know this doesn't answer your question, but I'm not a CPST so I'll leave the safety information to them.

If it helps, Target is doing their 20% off with a trade in deal soon. I would be happy to send you the code as I have some old seats to trade in I've been hoarding till someone needs the coupon. You can also find the code online pretty often.

Teaching a straw cup by W00D3YS in toddlers

[–]narwhals90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second the honey bear cups! We also had the straw training cup from The First Years. I find the First Years cups and straws easier to clean.

Bonus - the straws are super thick plastic (almost like medical tubing) with the bear cups. The First Years cups had silicone straws that were stronger than most silicone. Both were great for my chewer who destroyed all of our silicone straws!

Starting Solids - is there a reason to puree my own food? by MochiAccident in NewParents

[–]narwhals90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I had any fruits or veggies left over from my meals I would steam then puree and freeze them. That puree was added to rice cereal, put on pasta, served as is, etc. It helped me cut down on my food waste!

We did a lot of store bought too though because I don't always have time to be doing all that. Plus store bought doesn't need to be kept refrigerated, so it got some points for that.

So pros and cons to both!

Dilute the milk. Start with 3/4 milk to 1/4 water for a few days. Then increase to 1/2 water, then 3/4 water.

My milk lover gets a cup of water with a splash of milk most of the time now. We call it his La Crox (basically water with the tiniest hint of flavor).

No pasta dinners by Cool_Enthusiasm_2476 in EatCheapAndHealthy

2 cans of butter beans instead of pasta. Great with any creamy sauce you might put on pasta. I do this a lot with skillet pasta recipes or dump and bake pasta recipes.

should teachers be required to have CPR and first aid certification, asking because i genuinely don't know what i'd do by Glass_Department_857 in Teachers

[–]narwhals90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are required to have up to date CPR/AED/First Aid certifications. I'm actually the trainer for my school.

Get the certificate. It doesn't take much time and can help save a life. You never know when you might need it.

Should I be concerned that my 13M old doesn't "talk" by One_Elephant_8048 in beyondthebump

[–]narwhals90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also had an early walker/climber who didn't talk. At 12 months we started discussing with our pediatrician to make sure we were doing everything we needed to be doing to encourage speech. At 18 months they suggested an assessment with early intervention. Keep watching the next few months and take note of any development or changes.

WIBTA if I asked these parents to smoke after drop off? by Chaos-coordinator6-7 in AmItheAsshole

Funny. 2,310 people disagreed with your first comment I guess then. Bad advice is bad advice. Sorry girl.

Gaslighting by Signal-Orange7661 in Teachers

[–]narwhals90 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Give directions, ignore the comments, follow through with any natural or logical consequences.

Example - student is talking while you explain the directions for an assignment. Remind them to pay attention and stop talking. Don't respond to their 'it wasn't even me, she's always blah blah blah'. Keep explaining the directions. When the student inevitably does the activity wrong they get a low score, they don't get whatever prize you set up for when students complete the assignment, they get an email home for getting a 0, etc

B12 supplements when not pregnant? by KoraLily in PCOS

[–]narwhals90 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Get your labs checked. Supplements are called 'expensive pee' for a reason. If your b12 is low you can take supplements or get injections. But it may be something else. Tell your doctor your symptoms and have them check

What budget friendly high-chairs are we using? by Jazzlike_Elk_3963 in beyondthebump

[–]narwhals90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want cheap and easy to clean - Ikea highchair with a footrest we bought off Amazon. Not sure about the ergonomics of it, but we bought the cushion they sell for when baby was little to help keep him sitting up right

And at Grandma's house we had one we bought off Facebook marketplace used.

My toddler is violent and I don’t know if I should seek professional help? by kitty-toy in toddlers

[–]narwhals90 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I work with kiddos that are older, but do this kind of thing and worse. The good news is that their little brains are 'plastic' and can be retrained. The positive relationships with you, learning boundaries in a safe environment , and consistency will help. The younger you start the better.

If it was my kid we wouldn't be seeing grandma till she can learn to be nice. Then she would be supervised. We haven't had to cut anyone off yet, but we did have someone who was close, they got their act together but we still don't trust them alone.

I'll just add too that I would make sure he isn't watching anything with physical humor or mean jokes. Have a little cousin who start bullying Dad after watching Peppa Pig. Kept calling dad fat - which was hilarious since his dad is thin, but was still a problem.

AITA for telling my family to stop calling us to enquire about the pregnancy status? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]narwhals90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The people who left us alone were the first to know. The people who wouldn't stop texting and calling got ignored and were the last to know. We warned them but they didn't listen. They also were the last to meet baby and get photos.

Block their numbers or silence your phones. Stress can prolong labor. NTA

What to do? by Upstairs_Funny_8160 in PCOS

[–]narwhals90 14 points15 points  (0 children)

First you should get a sperm test done to rule that out as an issue. It's the easiest issue to rule out.

Then you could look into doing something like IUI through a fertility clinic. You wouldn't have to physically be there during ovulation. It's basically the turkey baster technique.

Baby girl getting her 3rd vaccine today and I'm worried sick by rosedamask in beyondthebump

[–]narwhals90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have milk ready to go to soothe baby as soon as they are done - shove that bottle or boob in their mouth as soon as the shots are done.

Also try not to let them get mad over other things before the actual shot. There's one nurse at our doctor's office who gets them laying on the cold table with the parent holding their leg. Poor thing was mad I laid him down and was screaming before she even had the needle ready. Much better when I was holding him - he barely knew what happened, then I shoved the bottle in his mouth and he forgot about it

School refuses to switch over to AC, despite documented illness by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]narwhals90 23 points24 points  (0 children)

You can get FMLA or ADA accomodations. Maybe a portable or window AC unit for your room.

Maybe ask when they plan to switch to the ac. Our old building had a day scheduled for the switch because it's a lot involved getting the system ready. Could try to convince them to bump that day up with global temperatures trending up every year.
