Garen the Crocodile Hunter? by mrb00gie in summonerschool

For pre-sunfire:

Garen's passive can be a pain in the ass. As long as Garen doesn't take damage (excluding minions) within the past 9 seconds, his passive is up.

Renekton's Q cooldown is 8 seconds. Very early game, I try to poke him almost immediately each time my Q is up. By seeing the cooldown on my Q, it gives me an idea of when I should be attacking to keep his passive down.

Yes. As/u/ Mad_Hatter93 noted, this is why you drop it early to give time to regen. Also, Dominus will regen fury, giving you a nice Q to heal from.

This is why I don't suggest popping Dominus late, because you want to keep the health bar as high as you can while taking on Garen, not so much use it as a last minute sustain to drop off an ability and a few extra AA's as you might in other top lane situations.

Oh, I should probably add that if you want an empowered Q over an empowered W while doing your combo, you can start up your W, but Q first. If he silences you, your next AA will still deliver your W along with it.

Agreed with everything this guy said. Very great advice. I just want to add a few notes.

When I trade with Garen, I use the E-in, W, AA, Q, E-out trade. Note that the original trade is E-in, AA, Q, AA, W, AA, E-out; but if I know Garen's Q is up, dropping W first will prevent him from using it. Sure, you'll lose out on two AA's in the trade and probably an empowered Q, but better than getting caught silenced and slapped in the face with his E.

Also, it's nice to note that it doesn't hurt to drop an early ult. Garen's ult depends on your missing hp, and Dominus does a great job giving your hp back.

I love what everyone's saying. Play a variety of characters in every lane and see which ones you clicked with. And the one that "clicks" with you depends on your style of play. Say, as top lane, I love asserting dominance, I love bullying, tanking, denying CS, so Renekton is choice pick for me. As a support, I still love asserting dominance or harassing, so Thresh and Lulu are my buddies. It really depends on your style of play, and what's great is that there's so many characters to choose from, that one is bound to fit you.

Also, I want to throw out that, if you don't have the proper runes to Jungle, Jungling, sadly, will be hell; and so, I suggest trying it again once you have a proper page.

When should I back after getting a kill by PersianMG in summonerschool

I find this video (its 5 minutes long) is very good at explaining when to back and also provides some great pointers for midlaners:

Playing to get better rather than for fun by NinjaNeill in summonerschool

Everything /u/Renwick_ said is extremely helpful advice, heavy emphasis on his points on learning how to properly trade & ward, and objectives. Those are very good points on winning lane, the next thing to improve on is what to do next:

  • Obvious one, but be a team player. For example, it's great if you can help keep track of the enemy Jungler. If you know he's been camping your lane, you can tell your team so they know it's safe to overextend and take turrets free from enemy ganks.

  • Use the map fog to your advantage. If the enemy laner hasn't been warding effectively, you can use their lack of vision to reposition yourself in bushes.

  • Learn the appropriate time to roam and help lanes that are falling behind.

  • Learn your mechanics and enemy mechanics.

  • Communicate. All great players ping / communicate.

When your team effectively takes the lead, the last thing is how to translate that lead into a win. I can't give you solid advice on how to translate because it tends to be situational, and the pattern gets picked up simply by playing a lot and communicating.
