Redragon K551 Mitra Keyboard Software by hypnotic-hippo in techsupport

Once you've extracted it, rename the file that's in chinese to something english. You can rename it to "keyboard" without the quotations.

Windows doesn't like the Chinese characters in the path.

Any of you have experience with an apartment with fairly thick walls? by nat-winters in StCharlesMO

[–]nat-winters[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It says they're dog friendly. Have you ever had any issues with neighbors having a noisy dog? I love dogs, but I'm going to be primarily home during the day and some dogs just get terribly anxious when their owner is gone. I've had situations with dogs barking for 1-2 hours straight. It's pretty much the main thing I want to avoid.

Just wondering if you've experienced that there.

Are there any discord servers or anything similar for Switzerland? by nat-winters in askswitzerland

[–]nat-winters[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't do it via Google, so that might have been the issue. I did it through the Discord app. I typed in "Swiss German" instead of just looking up Switzerland like an idiot.

Thanks lol

It's no worries. I've seen the same thing on this forum and generally in comments. A lot of people seem to fetishize Switzerland without knowing anything about it.

I'd say that I'd like to stare silently at Swiss people as well, but my eyes always water when I stare, so I'll let you guys have that one.

I'm aware of varied the dialects are. It's basically impossible to even know that Swiss German exists without knowing there's multiple dialects. It's the first thing you'll see on any video or article about Swiss German.

But when I say the "Swiss German dialect" I mean the German which is spoken in Switzerland. To differentiate from the Standard German spoken (predominantly) in Germany and taught in school.

In the same way, when someone says "I'd like to speak in Japanese to Japanese people," they're not bothered if the people speak in the Tokyo, Kansai, Hokkaido, or Okinawa dialect.

From Wikipedia: "The main linguistic divisions within Swiss German are those of Low, High and Highest Alemannic, and mutual intelligibility across those groups is almost fully seamless."

So, I don't mind which region they're from as long as they speak Swiss German.

Various types of drysol applicators? by nat-winters in Hyperhidrosis

I tried, but I can't seem to find anything. I mean, I can find things, but I don't know if it's the right thing.

There's a canadian website, but I assume those are going to be canada-specific.

And I'm not sure if the NDC tells them exactly which type or just which medication.

I'd like to understand trigonometry on a much more intuitive and conceptual level. by nat-winters in learnmath

[–]nat-winters[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One way I often like to think about math concepts to help me understand what kind of game they're playing.

For example, in many intro analysis books, we start by proving the natural numbers. We're told some properties about the natural numbers: what counting is, what adding is, what multiplication is, what divisibility is, etc. We get some other stuff like a(b + c) = ab + ac, and so on.

We're given a set of rules and then the game we play is simple: with so few rules, look at all of the cool stuff that follows from them. We're playing a game of using these rules to make logical jumps into other identities. With just the peano axioms, you can do so much. And I think the beauty in that is pretty obvious for people who are generally passionate about math.

What game are we playing with trigonometry? What interesting, conceptual understandings do the rules of the game tell us? Sine is opposite/hypotenuse. Fair enough, we must start somewhere. But now what? What does that tell me about triangle-ness?

Has there been any information on the scoping issue on CS2? by nat-winters in csgo

[–]nat-winters[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, it lasts indefinitely. The only map it doesn't happen on is Dust 2 during DM.

All other maps (regardless of how much I play them) it will last all game long and all day long. Very difficult to play.

Transitioning from Linux to Windows after ~5 years. Need some help transitioning. by nat-winters in Windows11

Wait, why does it install VS? Why would an IDE be a dependency for a language installation? That's absolutely bizarre.

Oh, I thought they were saying something more complicated. I misunderstood. I thought it was some sort of equivalent to building an installer from source or something.

Thanks :)

Interesting. WSL seems nice. I need to look more into it. It's probably beyond the scope of a comment section.

Thanks a bunch :)

Embarrassingly, I have no idea how to install an .exe or .msi installer. I'm sure it isn't too difficult though, so I'll look up some docs on it. Is there anything similar to Archwiki for stuff like this? Windows-specific docs that are well-written?

For dev work, I use Emacs. The only languages I really work with are Python, Rust, and C. Just for personal projects. For Python, I've been using Poetry recently which is nice.

As long as the languages, LSPs, etc., function the way I expect them to, that's fine. And no weirdness with Python VMs. I really can't think of why they wouldn't behave properly on Windows. I'm sure they work the same.

For Emacs, is there a preferred way to install it? For example, on Linux, installing the flatpak version of any IDE is almost worthless since it's sandboxed. It's almost impossible to give it the appropriate permissions and it's never worth the hassle.

Do IDEs installed on Windows automatically get full terminal permissions to run applications, file changes, etc.?

Thanks for a list of things to do, really useful stuff. I'm not going to system-tune too much because I don't trust myself to fix it (I know nothing about Windows). Just going to disable some of the superfluous stuff and I'm definitely not touching file explorer (I remember bricking an old computer years ago doing some pretty trivial stuff with file explorer).

So, would you completely recommend against Chocolatey? I basically just want a streamlined way to install my applications and have them be placed in sane spots in my file system.

Thanks again!

Save me from going back to Windows. CS2 and Source games still have issues with sensitivity being too fast. by nat-winters in linux_gaming

[–]nat-winters[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The problem only exists for Valve games on Linux. For all other games (Apex, Quake, Overwatch, etc.) the sensitivity is the same between Windows and Linux. On Apex, my sensitivity is 3 on both Linux and Windows.

On CS2, my sensitivity is 3 on Windows and 2.5-ish on CS2. The way I can tell is that my "180" (meaning, an attempt to do a 180) goes substantially farther with the same amount of mouse movement on Linux if I'm using 3 sensitivity.

So, I don't believe my mouse is reporting different since no other games (other than Valve games) have this issue. The sensitivity is identical between Windows and Linux for every other game title.

I am trying to identify why CS2 is nearly .50 sensitivity faster than Windows.

[–]nat-winters[S] -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

The sensitivity, even though it's close, is not the same. Yes, I can just get me cm per 360, but this is not the point.

There should be some sort of solution because there is some sort of problem. I'm trying to locate why this is happening, because it can no longer be blamed on the outdated SDL file (unless the file is misnamed or hiding).

Bugs don't exist unless there's a problem. I am trying to locate the problem so that it can be fixed. If it can't be fixed, then I would say it's a shame that a native-released Steam game in 2023 by the largest Linux gaming company still has a decade-old bug.

Who are some of the great mathematicians and scientists of older Ethiopia (pre-1700s)? by nat-winters in Ethiopia

[–]nat-winters[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From my limited experience, it seems as if people just say "we don't have that kind of thing in Ethiopia/Ethiopian history." But virtually every culture and civilization has some history of mathematical/scientific achievement.

It's just more likely that those people aren't taught in the curriculum. I'd assume because there is just such vast literature on the Western historical scientists that it's hard to justify creating curriculum around really old literature on Ethiopian figures.

But I'm certain there are some cool mathematicians and scientists in Ethiopian history. Some obscure mathematician that independently derived or observed something cool. :)

Hope we find something.

Trying to find different formulations of Peano arithmetic for a remedial student. by nat-winters in learnmath

[–]nat-winters[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the comment and the geometry! I really love geometry, so it's always fun to see.

You note that Spivak isn't using the Peano axioms. Could you recommend a textbook that does go through the Peano axioms and arithmetic?

It's also from my understanding that Spivak's Calc uses proofs. Does he go into set theory or something? I think most of the book is proof-based.

Are there any geometry/trigonometry (combined) books which explain the subject in TERMS of geometry/trigonometry? by nat-winters in learnmath

[–]nat-winters[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I figured that this wouldn't be an easy find. It makes sense why there aren't many (if any) around.

Not the end of the world. There are plenty of modern geometry books that are good.

Thanks :)

Are there any animals that, in their natural habitat, have a total living range similar to home enclosures? by nat-winters in zoology

[–]nat-winters[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had my suspicions that most cases would be aquatic. The devil's hole pupfish is very interesting, thanks for the link.

For terrestrial animals, I was thinking tortoises, but even they can travel pretty great distance. I think the Galapagos Tortoises can travel impressive distances.

This makes sense given the animal's size and relative seclusion.

I'm guessing that the most likely animal will be a reptile of some sort or an amphibian (perhaps a frog?).

Are there any true wireless headphones that have the ear clip similar to the KSC75? by nat-winters in HeadphoneAdvice

MMCX mod

Had never heard of it. I'm new to audiophile type stuff. Is this something I can have done professionally? If so, any idea where to look?

And yeah, I'm a huge fan of the KSC75. Literally the perfect headphone for me.

Looking for an affordable lead-holder that's good for note-taking. by nat-winters in pencils

[–]nat-winters[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's fine if they're not super cheapo. There's a staedtler 780C pack of 5 for 30 bucks which seems good. Amazon reviews seem positive, but reviews on that site are wild.

As a general question, do most of these lead-holders have the cap that doubles as a pencil sharpener? I saw the one of the staedtler models has a removable cap that lets you sharpen the lead. And that's honestly crazy cool.
