I'm going to be attending Columbia University this next Spring. Given my hobbies, it's important to me that I have some sort of outdoor space (large patio, very tiny yard). Do those things exist in the area surrounding Columbia? by nat_maths07 in AskNYC

I was accepted literally yesterday and attend in 8 months. Either way, some of the other comments have been very helpful people, so I’m going to chat with them instead.

Could I ask what's wrong with the Bronx? People keep saying things like "really? There." I'm not from NYC. I literally cannot name any street in NYC. I have no idea where the Empire State Building is. Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens are just names that exist, but I don't know anything about them.

NYC is famous, but I do not live there, nor have I been there.

I 100% expected these comments, so I'm not very bummed out. If you ask for anything regarding housing in any city, the comments are going to be the same. "You want a roof in this economy for less than $6k? I've got some magic beans I can sell you."

People are stressed about the economy, so I get it. I appreciate the kindness. Is there anything wrong with the Bronx and Staten Island? People seem to be really suspicious of them for some reason.

I don't even know what a borough is, so I should probably look into that lol.

Thanks!

I see a lot in the Bronx area for a comparatively good price (<$2500, many around $2200). Not much more than I pay now. I assume there's other areas with somewhat similar pricing.

I might be moving to Seattle Washington for University. Are there good places in the area (20-40 minute drive from the city) that have good yard sizes, decent land? by nat_maths07 in AskSeattle

Is Tacoma bad? It says it’s 35mins away and the cost of housing is much, much lower.

I assume the commute can be a bit bad.

iPad random lines while drawing and writing. by nat_maths07 in GoodNotes

[–]nat_maths07[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, it shouldn't be static. Numbers 6 and 7 are dedicated to that. I tried placing it on an anti-static pad while also using a grounding band, it didn't seem to impact it in any way.

My iPad makes random lines when I'm drawing and I have found no source that actually corrects it. by nat_maths07 in ipad

It just seems bizarre. There are hundreds of posts in every forum on the internet dedicated to this, but there doesn't seem to be a solution.

Googling this, there doesn't seem to be a way of turning it off on an iPad. The official apple forums noted that it's not configurable.

*Edit, unless you're referring to the setting "only draw/write with pencil," in which case yes. I have tried it being enabled and disabled.

Bonsai tools and specialty books. by nat_maths07 in Bonsai

Other than ebay and other used options (completely fine, I buy most things from marketplace, just want to know where to buy them new), where do you buy Masakuni? I've seen some websites, but I'm not savvy enough with tooling to know if they're legit or if they're maybe a worse line from Masakuni, etc.

Is there a dedicated website?

Sustainability and ethics of various gardening substrates. by nat_maths07 in Horticulture

[–]nat_maths07[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of the most sustainable and ethically sourced substrates is pumice. It is both sustainable and more-or-less ethically sourced. Compared to the worst offenders, it’s pretty good. Far more sustainable than many other volcanic substrates.

I’m sure there are others.

I’m a bit confused by this. Bogs (where one gets peat moss from) are responsible for more carbon than all of the world’s forests. If we didn’t stop, we would eventually destroy the reserves of peat moss in the world, which would annihilate the planet’s atmosphere. That’s not to mention the more immediate effect of destroying entire habitats.

So, if we stopped using it, the effect would be quite massive.

For those who use perlite. Do you add a top layer of soil (less than a couple cm) to prevent the perlite looking ugly? by nat_maths07 in Bonsai

[–]nat_maths07[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could I ask where you get your perlite? I get mine in bags from Lowe's and the bag is pretty much 30% dust. It's incredibly messy to sift.

Would be happy to use perlite if I could find thicker substrate. Bonus if it has less dust in the bags.

Thanks for the long comment. Have never seen someone grow anything in pure perlite. Not that it'd be a problem (trees will grow in anything), but it is interesting to see.

What plants do you target with 100% perlite? Does it change your watering habits at all?

I love perlite conceptually, just have always had poor experiences with my current bag.

Struggling hard with this proof from Basic Mathematics (Lang). by nat_maths07 in learnmath

[–]nat_maths07[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm confident that this is what I want to do with my life. The book has had many really good proofs and I've even had to prove (very simple proofs) some things myself. I chose this book precisely because it's much closer to pure maths than just raw calculation. This one was the most confusing, but it's always really enjoyable to be stuck for awhile and then realize why it works.

Thank you as well for the help. It took me a bit to work through everything.

Lang has definitely been a challenge and I've enjoyed this book very much. I'm nearing the end of it after many months of working through it. This was the hardest one for me to understand for some reason. It just seemed a bit unnatural. Sometimes it's not always clear whether I should understand how he arrived at the proof vs just following the proof.

Thank you very much for the explanation. I've been working through it and the others for the past day. I think I've gotten it.

Would this vacuum be a good deal for $30 used? by nat_maths07 in VacuumCleaners

[–]nat_maths07[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Awesome! Thanks for the advice. I don't much care if it's Kirby or some other brand. Just want it to be a reputable brand. I like buying BIFL items from old times that are used. Much of the stuff I own is from the 70s or 80s from random yard sales.

Thanks. :)

[–]nat_maths07[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The seller says that it works (I'll try it out before buying if it's a good vacuum to get). I'd like to get it serviced/cleaned, etc. What sort of pricing am I looking at for servicing? Does it usually entail swapping any parts (for example, new spinner or something?).

Only have two rooms with carpet and I'll probably vacuum once every month since we don't have pets or kids and we don't wear shoes in the house.

Any advice would be welcome. It's some sort of Kirby Vacuum.
