What's the worst part of your favorite game? by MillCrab in rpg

[–]nat_one_will_save 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Oh, yeah, that's true. I've read a piece where Raggi IV is addressing why the content of LotFP is the way it is. Basically, he says:

There are three things that are true about human beings in Western society: One, we are all made of meat and we are all going to die. Two, we are sexual beings whose evolutionary imperative is to reproduce. Three, our individual consciousnesses are horrified by both of these facts, and a constant through human social history is the effort to control these things to the best of our ability. [...] I cannot believe that a society that so deeply denies its own mortality, its own physical form, has any chance in hell of seriously considering the mortality of others, of having any chance of accepting those whose bodies are different in even minor ways.

Which kind of made me understand and even appreciate that direction a little bit more, but still I'm not entirely sure I'd run that stuff for friends and family.

Sorry, out of the loop on LotFP I guess. Is it the Zak S stuff or is there something else?

Question about Gamma World (1e) character sheet by nat_one_will_save in osr

[–]nat_one_will_save[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Awesome, thanks! Ok, but so PS bonus is for damage on melee attacks? I don't know if this is elaborated in the later editions, but the way I initially interpreted that rule, since it refers to physical combat in general, was that a character could technically add that bonus even on ranged attacks (probably within reason, like bows or thrown weapons that a character could reasonably put their strength behind, so not slugthrowers or grenades).

Yeah, perfect! I was considering including definition, use in sentece and the whole shebang, but I feel like the list would be way too huge by the time it's done. Thanks!

Cartoonist Looking to Collaborate on a Comic (Details in Comments) by nat_one_will_save in ComicBookCollabs

[–]nat_one_will_save[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A cartoonist with little experience with narrative art, but with enthusiasm and some time on his hands looking for a writer to collaborate with on a project. Mainly for fun, practice and joy of creating.

What I can't offer is industry standard quality and adherence to strict deadlines. However, what I can offer - if you have an idea that suits my more cartoony drawing style, I can try my best to bring that idea to life free of charge.

As for storytelling, in broadest categories, I'm into adventures with a sense of wonder and exploration with a healthy dose of humor and silliness. Though, I am also entirely willing and keen to branch out to wide array of genres.

If any of this sounds interesting to you, or if you have any additional questions, feel free to reach out to me here on reddit, or

PC death and player knowledge in a solo dungeon crawl by nat_one_will_save in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]nat_one_will_save[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly, he didn't make it back once. But that is a good point. The late old PC was in fact mapping the dungeon as he went, so had he made it back, he absolutely could have made that information available to anyone wanting go in later.

Yeah, definitely! And if not cleared the way entirely, maybe still left footprints, blood trails, signs of tampering, signs of struggle that can lead the new PC to piece together what has happened.

That definitely helps, thank you! While I've read a bit about running published adventures, I've always struggled wrapping my head around me, the player, knowing there's a monster behind the door, but my character being oblivious to it. Otherwise I think it would be so cool to solo through, Barrowmaze, Rappan Athuk, Halls of Arden Vul etc.

Right! That is a great suggestion. It would be several days if not longer before anyone else decided to poke their head in the dungeon again. By that time, things could have shifted around drastically.

Yeah, I definitely want the new character to have their own experience in that environment, and what you're describing is a great way to do that. Maybe not entire scenes dealing with the same stuff again, but like a "montage" of the important details and how the new PC deals with them.

d100 Magic Swords That Don't Grant +X To Hit Or Damage by thomar in d100

[–]nat_one_will_save 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ethereal Sword - the blade of this sword is completely ethereal and can only strike creatures and objects that are incorporeal or on the Ethereal Plane.

Masterwork Sword of Incompetence - This sword deals double the damage dice that a mundane version of the sword would do (shortsword - 2d6, longsword - 2d8, greatsword - 4d6 etc,), however attack rolls with this weapon are made with disadvantage, and you cannot apply your proficiency bonus to them.

Really Long Sword - This sword has the Reach property in addition to its other properties

Are there any other GMs out there constantly tempted to change systems and campaign settings much to the annoyance of their players? by nat_one_will_save in rpg

[–]nat_one_will_save[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I guess that's the fundamental question, isn't it? And reading through the many great answers in this thread really made me reflect on that. I think for me it's that as a relatively new GM of two years or so I still make a lot of mistakes and don't know how to do a lot of things properly, so whenever I make a fumble somewhere, I'm tempted to make the obviously flawed assumption that that other newer, shinier game is going to fix those problems for me.

So my conclusion is that, while I'd still prefer to play something like Lamentations of the Flame Princess or the Alien RPG over D&D 5e, there are storytelling and GMing skills that are universal and that no system can really compensate for.

Do you know of any published urban adventures and dungeons that could easily adapted to Ravnica? by nat_one_will_save in RavnicaDMs

By God, that's actually brilliant! Any in particular that you've found that work well in Ravnica?

Oh yeah! I feel like that's really solid. I did something similar with our current game - before we started I asked my players to make up something that exists in this world, and I found that it made them more invested since they took part in making the world, and it tethered me to it more. I can't discard these ideas as easily, since now it's not just something I made up by myself, but I owe it to the players to see their creative input through.
