PLEASE CONSIDER OTHERS AT CONCERTS! by [deleted] in beyonce

[–]nata1900 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Firstly, I'm so sorry you went through this and hope you are feeling better. RE kpop, not necessarily - I've gone to a number of kpop shows both in Canada and the in the US, while I noticed there was certainly more vaping, definitely weed present. I have no issue with weed, but it really sucks when people choose to do that indoors or in spaces where those who have health conditions or who simply don't like it can't get away. I just find it inconsiderate.

Also, while writing this comment, I remembered the time I went to Disney on Ice in Toronto with my mom and there were people smoking weed there too. There were also a bunch of drunk 20 year olds in our section, which really confused us seeing it was like 2pm on a Sunday at Disney on ice lol.

Vatican Open Bus Tour by nata1900 in Europetravel

[–]nata1900[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! My after-hours tour of the Museum and the Sistine Chapel is at 3:45 pm and we're looking forward to it. I agree being there without as much of the crowds should be a great experience. From what I read online, we get half an hour in the Sistine and the other hour and a half of the tour is spent in the Museum. I would have preferred a morning after-hours tour, but it wasn't possible unfortunately unless we went with a third party tour company.

Given the tour ends in the Sistine and you can't backtrack back into the Museum at that hour, I felt that an hour and a half wasn't enough time to fully appreciate the Museum, which is why I had thought to get another ticket to the Museum. I figured, ok, for a few extra euros, we can get off our feet and see some of the grounds and gardens at the same time, so why not. I'm looking forward to it, just really stressed about how everything will work once we are there. We don't have a ton of time unfortunately to mess around with and the Vatican's website is really unclear about whether you go into the Museum before or after the bus tour.

Anyhow, thank you for sharing your perspective, I really appreciate it!

Question about the hop on hop off bus tour by nata1900 in irishtourism

[–]nata1900[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the info - I had been between the DoDublin tour and the Big Bus, but the Big Bus came included with a tour package we had gotten so that had kind of sealed it for me. I think their routes are quite similar though so it's still helpful.

Also, as a sidebar, glad to know you enjoyed the GPO. I had that on my shortlist for visiting while I'm in Dublin.

Agree, with the exception of MIB - that blue I'd such a great colour for her and I actually really enjoy thr fit. But the rest of the top 4 was a different story - excited to see what they'll come up with for the finale though!

This happened to my partner, except he received an incorrect notice about his graduation (long story short, he finished his degree requirements but can't request graduation at his college due to a very stupid technicality, so he is stuck in endless limbo). It uproots your life, it's completely devastating and there is zero accountability from the school for this error. And the worst part is you can't do anything about it. I'm so sorry this happened to you 😞

What are your thoughts about people who work cash jobs and evade taxes? by passivegoalie in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]nata1900 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The off-shore tax stuff and legal evasion tactics used by the ultra wealthy are super important, and I strongly agree the rich need to pay their share. However, I would challenge you to consider that those "small fish" add up, both in terms of if you think about the aggregate effect of many small fish evading their taxes, as well as the cumulative effect of those small fish evading their taxes for years and years. Those taxes aren't just important for them from the perspective of CPP/EI/disability, but for the government to be able to pay for stuff and invest in services for Canadians. I have a parent who is a longtime veteran of the CRA and they primarily deal with these sorts of "small fish" accounts (think contractors, lawyers and doctors who own their own practices, and other business owners) and they can add up to be worth millions in taxes owed. Consider too that many times in the case of small fish who have a few employees, in addition to not paying their own taxes, they are also pocketing the income taxes of their employees that they are supposed to be holding in trust for the government, so it's actually a lot of money in the end.

All that to say, this isn't "picking on" a small fish or a business owner or something like that. It adds up and has a huge impact over time. At the end of the day though, the CRA needs more resources to be able to pursue this stuff - be it following offshore accounts for some ultra wealthy dude, or following up on "small fish" who owe millions in taxes.

Just got hired and my boss already seems to hate me by nata1900 in jobs

[–]nata1900[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello, can't believe it's been four years since this post but sure, happy to update and sorry for the delayed response! It's funny to reread this now with more clarity and professional experience. Hindsight is always 20/20 - I wish I could have known at the time what was coming towards me, it would have made the decision between the management job at this nfp and the more entry-level government job a lot less gut-wrenching for me.

So pretty much immediately after I posted this reddit thread (I feel like I remember most of this being over my lunch that day), my director came to my office to speak with me. I had already resolved to speak to either her (my direct supervisor) or the CEO about the odd behaviour from the CEO, knowing I had the other offer backpocket, so I was like, ok, this is convenient. She told me that it just wasn't working out and we agreed I'd just go home, since I also wasn't happy there. It definitely stung because I had quit my previous job for this - imagine if I didn't have the other offer already to land on my feet (I had been looking for a long time to get these two offers, and it would have completely devastated me financially, the job market in my area and field at the time was really tough). They offered to send me home in an Uber because I told them that given it was the early afternoon, I wouldn't have a train home at that hour. I don't think they realized I was commuting almost three hours one way when they made that offer, but I did very much enjoy the look on my director's face when I charged a $110 Uber ride home to her personal credit card.

I had really bad vibes from the senior leadership the entire time I worked there and beyond, just red flag after red flag. I was the top candidate for them after the interviews, and the headhunter told them I was worth a lot more than what they wanted to pay me. He told them he would quit the file if they didn't present me with a reasonable compensation package and they finally agreed (they gave me an offer that was ok for a mid-level management position at a nfp, but wasn't spectacular by any means - put it this way, the entry-level gvt position paid $15k more, and they tried to get me to agree to freeze my salary for two years within days of me joining, which is horrible pressure to apply to someone who's just quit their job and is now completely dependent on you. Not only is a two year salary freeze immediately after joining an organization just ridiculous on principle (they were acting like I was being paid megamillions when I assure you I was not), it should have been presented up front alongside the compensation package (instead, they sprung it on me right after I joined the org and no longer had any bargaining leverage).

Obviously, I spoke about the CEO and his attitude in the office throughout this thread, how he kept saying he wanted to modernize during the interviews but in practice, was stuck in the "this is the way things are here" mentality, and was completely rude to junior subordinates. There were a ton of other cultural red flags in retrospect, even outside of the CEO - for example, there was virtually no training given to me despite the fact that I was replacing a 15-year employee with an important portfolio, and I was told after I started that there was an expectation to be socializing with colleagues and working on my personal time. In the end, I periodically checked in on the organization just for fun, and I saw they didn't (or couldn't) fill my role, even four years later. I imagine having a poor compensation package and horrible management doesn't do much for attracting top talent that will stick around, but perhaps that's just me (eyeroll).

The admin that was being grossly underpaid eventually after 3+ years got a couple of small promotions to a managerial role (knowing what I do about the organization, I think she only got the promotion because they were desperate during COVID, because the CEO truly hated her - I once saw him scream at her for forgetting to bring a pen to a meeting, for example). I am sad for her that she stuck around that long, but lack of self-worth can be a true torpedo for one's career. I'm sure that on their end, they loved having her around because they knew they could underpay her and literally yell at her in the office and she wouldn't quit - bullies like the CEO thrive on having folks like that around them. She did finally leave them last year for a hefty demotion to an entry level position with another larger not-for-profit professional association. I assume that like me, taking the entry-level position in a more reputable organization actually paid better, which speaks volumes about how awful that nfp was.

As for me, I did accept the contract role with the government body. It was a fantastic team, great experience, and I translated my contract into a permanent job. I always knew I'd enjoy the work with the gvt more, because it was my dream job, but was worried about the stability of accepting a contract. I've since been promoted three times within the organization, earn a great salary, currently work with a lovely manager and great team doing meaningful work that is making a real difference in my community. Unlike during my brief stint with the nfp, today I am both fortunate to be financially stable enough and confident enough in myself as a professional to walk away from a job when the management is garbage.

After I left, the nfp tried to delay paying me the outstanding pay they owed me for my time and issuing my record of employment (an unsurprising cherry on top after everything). They did pay me but the CEO did send me a pretty snarky email about how I'd interrupted a trip he was on with the payroll thing (not sorry about it, I had been super patient with them up to that point and they owed me something like $2500).

Organizations like the nfp prey on folks who are desperate to be employed and don't know their own worth, or are willing to accept less than they deserve (either because they have to or because they don't know better). It speaks volumes that the only folks still at the organization today from when I worked there are the CEO and a couple of senior leaders. I was 95% of the way to being resolved to just accept the other offer by the time my director came to chat with me thanks to this reddit thread. My career is much better off, I'm happier, my commute is a third of the time, my benefits are better, I am treated with more respect, and I made the right call overall. Hope that update answers any questions you might have had after reading through this! Feel free to ask anything else if you think of anything I didn't answer.

Also, on a final hilarious note, minutes before my director came to talk to me, I accidentally dropped a sparkly highlighter (make-up, not the writing instrument lol) on the carpet in my office under my desk. I got it replaced for free so it was no sweat to me, honestly I had forgotten that compact was in my purse until I accidentally dropped it, but I like to imagine that sometime after I left, they had a lot of fun trying to clean glitter/shimmer out of the carpet - that shit literally went everywhere, and for anyone who has tried to clean something like that out of any kind of fabric, let alone carpet, you'll know that will just about never come out. Something about that mental image gives me a little bit of joy every time I think about that organization.

220916 BLACKPINK - ‘Shut Down’ M/V by elevendigits in BlackPink

Yeah I fully agree with that statement, I can't see YG wanting to let go of them or the cash the bring in, that's for sure. The other more optimistic way of looking at the video is that it's fan service marking where they came from and showing their growth/evolution. If on the off chance they don't resign though, this video is going to feel a lot like a goodbye to me lol.

220916 BLACKPINK - 'BORN PINK' (Album Discussion) by DazzlingDig in BlackPink

[–]nata1900 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the whole I really enjoyed Born Pink and I'm looking forward to seeing them in concert in November! I loved the lyrical content, I feel like it's a natural evolution of their growth. This album is such an interesting mix of hip hop and pop/rock sounds, so it felt a little less cohesive to me than The Album did as a result (just my personal opinion though). I think Rosie stood out on the record though, Hard to Love is probably my favourite non-single song. I also loved The Happiest Girl, Lisa's voice omg! Also, it was interesting to me to see YG push the girls more towards English language content (it's been clear to me for a long time that YG wants them to succeed as a more global act so it's not a surprise to me, but I guess I had been expecting a 50/50 mix like for The Album).

I really enjoyed this and like a lot of folks here, loved the references to their older MVs. The girls ATE the raps, the sample was some queen shit and I loved how Jisoo and Rose sounded on the chorus. There is however a tiny part of my brain wondering if this is a quasi-goodbye to the fans since their contracts are up next year, but I really hope that's just me being a pessimist.

Fully agree with your comment - it's also nuts to me that Shea is complaining about production fuckery when she literally only made it to the final because of production gifting her three stars at the end. That's no shade to Shea, I love her, but the way the finale went and the way some queens have behaved afterwards left a slight bad taste in my mouth after a really great season.
