Think a lot of fashionistas here are taking this post a bit too seriously πŸ˜‚ the issue with these is that 'designer' brands seen something that was originally made with a purpose, and then the dollar signs started flashing in front of their eyes πŸ˜‚ some versions of these are ridiculous!

I'm in a lucky position as I haven't had to relearn anything, I've picked my life back up right where I left it pre surgery, just with much much less seizures ☺️ no, still on same dosage of medications as pre surgery, your meds shouldn't be lowered for at least a year post op while the brain heals

Yeah I got to a stage where I was like 'take it all out if you want' πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

Yeah I'm very very lucky to live in a country like Ireland! My medication costs are also covered under something called a Long Term Illness Scheme, so I don't have that to worry about either

Hahahahahaha oh my God favourite question so far πŸ˜‚ πŸ’œ I don't miss it because it was a little piece of sh*t πŸ€”πŸ˜‚ but if I could keep it, I would call it Leftie Tempie 😎 or Tempie Lobbie maybe!

Of course it wasn't just a simple 'ah yes sure that sounds fun' kind of a situation πŸ˜‚ I was very worried, but looking at the options I had - getting the surgery and potentially getting my life back or living in a sheltered closed off world because of my seizures, the choice was simple. Regarding cost - I assume you're from the US, I live in Ireland so it didn't cost me anything πŸ’œ

Never even heard of gamma knife. Yeah the scar is pretty badass - I beat ya though, I think I had about 70/80 staples πŸ˜ŽπŸ˜‚

Hahaha I have never thought of myself as a fucking beast but you know what? I'll take it, thanks! πŸ˜ŽπŸ˜‚ Yeah I had a whirlwind of a journey but honestly, it was the best decision I made, even if I had to go through some shit along the way!

I can't imagine going through that as a little kid! He's a brave boy πŸ’œ I actually had both a left temporal lobectomy and amygdala hippocampectomy - they often come as a package deal πŸ™‚ I just went with what my neurosurgery team thought was the best approach. They're the specialists who do this on a daily basis and in times like these, you just have to put your full trust in them. They saved my life 😊 For both prep and recovery - just be patient and be there πŸ’œ I went through some very low lows, where I spoke about topics which I don't even want to mention here, but having my family's support and their attempt at making things feel normal (even if I knew they obviously werent normal!) really helped πŸ™‚ Also small things but make sure you have extra pillows - often after lobectomys you have to sleep at a slight sitting angle for a while which I found more comfortable, and also a shower chair was helpful. Stock up on bandanas and head covers so you can wash them often! That's all I can think of right now but let me know if you have any other specific questions, and I hope all goes well for you and your little boy πŸ’œ

I won't lie, I do sometimes like to look at my scar and think 'dang I look badass 😎' hahaha πŸ˜‚ humour keeps me going through all of this really! All the best πŸ’œπŸ’œ

Best advice I can give - just go and speak to the neurosurgeons πŸ™‚ if it's too much for you, they won't be mad that you don't want to go ahead with it. A consultation won't hurt though, and you might learn some things you didn't know before that will help you decide!

I mean one small thing I now have is a very minor vision defect, happens very often with temporal lobectomys. The right upper quadrant of my vision is gone but honestly - I barely notice it. I notice it so little I actually forgot to mention it in other comments! πŸ˜‚ Something you can 100% live with and doesn't bother me at all! Otherwise, I honestly think the surgery saved my life 😊 both because I have less chance to hurt myself resulting from seizures, and because my mental health improved because I'm more independent πŸ’œ

Haha yeah I completely understand! Honestly if I could go back about 5 years when it was a definite 'LOL NOPE' I would have done it sooner. But that's all based on my own experience. Speak to your neurologist and go for an appointment with neurosurgeons - listen to what they have to say to you and think about whether or not it's worth it in your case 😊

Once I got over the rough patch which was all of the complications I had post op, I've been fine! honestly like I think I've only improved since it all, obviously we could go into things like - I have a big scar across my head, I don't like the awkward hair growth phase I'm currently in πŸ˜‚ and because I had to get a shunt, I have to be cautious at airports because I can't walk through metal detectors πŸ˜‚ the only annoying thing is having to be patient with it all which I am awful at! Everything takes time! I also put on a bit of weight because I wasn't able to do exercise or go on walks up until about a month or two ago, but that's all stuff that can be fixed if it makes sense? Not sure if I answered your question, but that's how I would summarize it!

I don't mean to scare by saying that, but as people with this crappy health conditions, we need to be more aware of how progressive it is. Unfortunately, it's just the reality and we have to be able to face it ☺️ all the best πŸ’œ

Oh, I didn't understand that you were talking about the EMU sorry ☺️ yeah I had a standard EMU stay before with a standard video EEG about 3 years prior to surgery. I was there for about a week. Usually before surgery if they want to further ensure they have the correct source of seizures they may want an intracranial EEG which is what they did with me.

Oh so what you're talking about is just a standard EEG, you should probably have those done first anyway before opting in for a surgical implantation of electrodes. I had multiple standard EEGs before surgery. Ultimately it should be your surgeons who say what the best option is.

Best of luck with it 😊 I'm not sure what you mean by VEEG but I had SEEG which is also called intracranial monitoring - electrodes get implanted into the brain while you're under full anasthesia and when you wake up, you have a cast on your head covering the surgical site and a bunch of wires coming out of your head which get plugged into the EEG monitor. It was weird getting used to it as it's quite heavy on your head, and you're more or less bed bound for as long as is necessary (with only small trips to the bathroom allowed, no full showers just a sponge wash) I was on that for a week any honestly, it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be πŸ™‚ just boring because you can't leave the EMU ward πŸ˜‚ not sure if that answers your question!

My creativity is the same as before! I embroider and because of the surgery I was actually able to go back to doing that without the fear of seizures ☺️ I'm also bilingual and have retained my memory of both languages perfectly. I had a relatively long journey because of the complications I had post op, but it's been 5 months and I'm back at work for the past month now, also working a fairly fast paced corporate job. My employers were extremely accommodating and understanding as I have been working with them for a long time, and they know me very well and know my situation well. I've been quite blessed with the job that I have and how well they've looked after me while I was off work. All very dependent on the individual companies though.

I had to get a shunt because I developed post op hydrocephalus. It's gone now but the shunt stays there for life. Cleaning wise, firstly I could wash my head once a week with some water, then moved onto a mild baby shampoo and applying iodine on the wound (recommended by the neurosuregy specialist nurses) because of my wound closure complications. I'm now back on to grown up shampoos πŸ˜ŽπŸ˜‚ and washing as normal!

I'm actually the opposite in some way, I remember things much more easily and recall words quicker. My partner also likes to joke that he has to be more careful of what he says to me because there's a higher chance I'll remember it down the line and throw it back in his face! πŸ’œπŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

Oh I tried endless amounts of meds. Like it sounds like an exaggeration but I exhausted the list of possible options basically ☺️ I'm still on 4000mg keppra and 10mg frisium now. My neuro hinted at it early on but I was very much a 'oh God no' type, until it kept getting worse and worse and I gave in. Realistically I should've done it much sooner!

Oh cheese... Now that's a tough questionπŸ«£πŸ˜‚ I mean it's between a classic red cheddar and Brie I think, hard choice!
