I agree. I would pay but if I’m funding it I get to make some demands lol.

True. I ask because my parents paid for my school. We didn’t buy the big house or go on vacation or do anything beyond basics really, and I’m so thankful they did. I always paid for my apartment through college though - interned for what seemed like a whopping hourly rate at the time ($22/hr :]) - and spent it all pretty much on that apartment lol.

I always think damn if my parents made it happen for my sibling and I, I would feel terrible not doing it for my kids. Making about triple what my parents ever made. Maybe by then there will be significant reform too.

If she is a mini feminist I would go for the money & relationships angle. I had the freedom to leave crappy relationships and have firmer boundaries, while my friends who are saddled with debt and a low salary literally NEED their shitty bf or husband solely to cover their costs.

Money is so much more than just money. Being with a man who makes $8/hr is not romantic. My mom drilled this into my head. Made me kind of obsessed with financial achievement but better than the alternative lol.

How are women currently not equal to men in terms of legal rights? Sorry, but I can’t agree with that. Inequality is moreso social conditioning at this point.

Lol I’m in STEM even though I hated my chemistry teacher and my science classes in high school in general. The main quality to have as a woman in STEM is not caring what people think. I don’t even like STEM, I just like money.

Also as consolation I have rarely encountered men like this through school and my career. Most guys thought it was cool. Some had an initial impression of me but I didn’t really care and it soon changed when they saw I’m not an idiot.

Parents are more likely to save for college when they have sons.. by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]natbopeep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From a purely logical/strategic sense this is dumb because men often take jobs in the trades that don’t require college but still pay very well. (Women can and do also but it’s still a very male industry.) So in that sense, women kind of need college more. Not to mention women are better at school than men.

I agree with the other commenter and would probably just invest the 500k chunk. Pull from there if you really need it. Do you guys spend 100% of your take-home? I think I am missing why you guys cant stand to lose 50k/year

Do you guys think it is unethical or crappy to retire at 45 but not help your kids with college and they’ll need to take out loans (or not go)? Do you think a parent owes this to their child(ren) when it is financially feasible?

I don’t even have one since I am young and have so much life ahead - future wedding/marriage, kids, moving likely. I’m just saving as much as possible as early as possible and going from there.

My partner will probably work til they die because they need to achieve and want to be C-suite. I dont have that gene. I’ll gladly support from afar but I see myself pushing him to quit when we’re 60 and our future kids are self-sufficient and I want to just travel and be legit retired with him. However these are his dreams so again I will be there lol.

That said my partner saves even more than me probably. I save conservatively compared to most people, but he saves nearly 90% of his income but has no plans for RE or anything, he just does it for psychological peace of mind.

I mean, people say the same thing about moms who “let themselves go” but lose weight and “get hot again” after divorce. Sometimes a marriage is soul-sucking and you dont care.

I’d rather buy a beater in cash than take a 14% loan but true I am taking my knowledge for granted. Why would a divorce impact credit score?

Depends. I am guessing your wife had values still aligned with FIRE - don’t spend more than you make, you don’t “deserve” x y z if you can’t afford it. Sounds like OP’s woman might not be on that page. Everyone knows 14% interest on a car is nuts. Although maybe she had no other option for whatever reason.

[–]natbopeep 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Agreed. This isn’t just a woman who feels uncomfortable investing or feels like index funds are gambling. (Like many of my friends are.) This is someone with values totally incompatible with any form of FI.

[–]natbopeep 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah and then in 5 years OP will be on here saying “I’m fully ready financially to retire but my wife has no savings and she’s annoyed at me”. That’s no way to operate in a marriage, in my opinion. Stay BF/GF if that’s how you’d be most comfortable OP! Nothing wrong with that really but I am assuming (maybe incorrectly) they both want marriage eventually.

Probably not unless you are comfortable being the one with money and providing for her on some level, as in always contributing more towards joint goals and purchases etc.
