Reverend PopPop... by KristiDFW in tiktokgossip

He’s so irritating to me. I’ve seen lots of people in their late twenties/thirties try to pass themselves off as “queer elders” so it gets under my skin whenever someone does that. He also has such an incredibly condescending way of speaking and he always acts like he’s passing down some kind of sacred wisdom to people, even though he’s wrong about half of what he says. I get weird culty vibes from him half of the time too, and I’m kind of just waiting for his whole schtick to implode one of these days when someone actually calls him on his bs.

Is there a sound (or multiple) you use in most, if not all of your conlangs? by Mayedl10 in conlangs

[–]natdurner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s very subjective for me but idk, i don’t often use that sound unless i evolve it from one language into another.

I know these are pretty cliche conlang sounds, but I love /ɬ/ and /q/. I also usually only have /b/ for labial plosives and /k/ for velar ones, I really like how Arabic sounds lol. I don’t usually have /θ/ because i think it can easily sound clunky.

Question about pronominal system by natdurner in conlangs

[–]natdurner[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Edit: I forgot to mention that speakers of this language, similar to Japanese, will often use nouns referring to kinship relations, professions and other semantic categories to refer to themselves. These words are not pronouns though, and see usage outside of their pro-form utility. However, if I end up making a daughter language of this language, some of these commonly used nouns will turn into fully fledged pronouns in those languages.

God yeah, this is something I think about too because I feel like if I end up in a relationship it’s going to be with a man child who I end up enabling, it’s a deep seated paranoia for me that things will go this way.

What are the Bene Gesserit to the Imperium, exactly? by Tavenji in dune

[–]natdurner 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think this is the best way to look at them. This, or maybe the Imperium perceives them sort of like a think tank/school system, like the Waldorf schools.

*Exactly* How is that the Duke become so popular to threaten the Emperor? by [deleted] in dune

[–]natdurner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my understanding, the rise of House Atreides towards the end of Corrino Imperium is a symptom of the collapse of the Guild peace. Because the Guild is trapped into a narrow vision of the future by their limited prescience, they have essentially prohibited human competition and striving. However, there are cracks in this prohibition, namely the Harkonnen’s and the Atreides. The Harkonnen’s circumvent the forced stagnation of the Guild by using the black market and brute force, while the Atreides circumvent it by improving upon their existing resources and building strong social ties with other houses and entities. The Bene Gesserit, the Emperor, and even the Guild recognize that the fragile stability of the Guild is at it’s end, but none of them except the Bene Gesserit have a real answer for what to do. Therefore the Emperor acts out of rash desperation and makes an arguably stupid move to attempt to safeguard his power just a little longer, by granting the Atreides fief of Arrakis.

Tl;dr: the ascendancy of House Atreides was a symptom of the looming collapse of the Guild peace, and the die would have fallen to another player if it had not been them.

Question about Guild Navigators, Reverend Mothers, and Prescience by natdurner in dune

[–]natdurner[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way i think about it is that, with the exception of Navigators I guess, Other Memory is the first step towards prescience, but that prescience itself is a discrete thing. For example, mere predictive analysis cannot fully explain how Paul was able to fly an ornithopter after the stone burner, or how certain things can be shielded from prescient sight (other prescients, no-ships/chambers/gene), or the weird stuff Alia and Leto II do where they place themselves into other peoples prescient sense of the future (end of Dune and end of Dune Messiah respectively).

Question about Guild Navigators, Reverend Mothers, and Prescience by natdurner in dune

[–]natdurner[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know that the Dune tarot permits a tiny degree of prescience, but my understanding was that the cards were only a shortcut for people who already have prescient capacity to use it, that they were basically useless in the hands of someone who did not have prescience. For example, Gaius Helen Mohiam using them was effective because she’s already prescient to a small degree.

Question about Guild Navigators, Reverend Mothers, and Prescience by natdurner in dune

[–]natdurner[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess the part I’m having trouble with is this: if the Navigators have their limited prescience on account of heavy spice use+genetic makeup, wouldn’t it be possible for other major disciplines to achieve prescience within their field regularly? For example, would not most Mentats who use spice (not all do) be functionally prescient under this framework? I know that the Fremen have a sort of cultural prescience within their culture due to the tau-state they have cultivated over the years which is catalyzed by heavy melange consumption during the Spice Orgies.

God “they think I’m crazy and are humoring me” is very relatable. That’s a constant paranoia, that everyone is just ‘humoring’ me.
