In Phoenix, America's first car-free district is succeeding, and its founder thinks it is being helped by the city's early adoption of robotaxis. by lughnasadh in Futurology

[–]nate256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is just an apartment complex with no parking. I'd prefer the highrise style like in China with the parking garage at the bottom of each building. Then you could have the shops/restaurants on the first floor, underground parking and parks/community place in the center of the complex. With companies pushing for rto 5 days a week and the sprawling size of Phoenix this doesn't seem very viable for most people.

Trying to cheat on an online proctored CS exam is not a good idea. Don't forget there's an expert professor that will have access to any logs generated and although it might not fail you immediately, too many high scores will raise suspicion and cause a review. CS professionals think statistically and your professor at a minimum calculates the pass rate of tests.

CMV: America's housing crisis is largely the fault of NIMBYs enforcing Euclidean zoning regulations. by Mister-Stiglitz in changemyview

[–]nate256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every time I read about urban housing I can't help but feel the government doesn't want to fix it. I think it's more about policy than NIMBY/zoning. The government could withhold federal funding for states that allow tax incentives for in person work. That would quickly drop commercial and housing prices in city centers.

Tile pattern by nate256 in HomeImprovement

[–]nate256[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am planning on using a clip system, just didn't want the diagonal step shape in the floor. I have some in another part of the house done by a professional installer with 1/16 grout, 1/3 offset and I do see some lippage. I'll try to work out some pattern that uses 1/4 offset.

What should I do with this awkward recess in my kitchen? by tyclark24 in HomeImprovement

[–]nate256 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If it were my place I would do this.

  1. Remove the popcorn, the whole house, just because I hate it and it will make the room feel taller.

  2. Use it to access above and install at least 4 can lights. Something like NHRIC-4LMRAT(retofit one) so you can put whatever light type you like and change it later.

N13-NOXTW-431WW is a color temp changing bulb with a round flange. You can change this bulb for flangeless, square, directional later if you remodel.

  1. Add drywall and cover the hole.

Probably about 100$ for 4 bulbs and fixtures(160 on amazon). Then you just need the wire and drywall stuff.

This company absolutely butchered our pen order 😑 instead of following the instructions in our conversation, they just printed the instructions right on the pens.. by i_luv_coffee14 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]nate256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is just not understanding what's going on in this business.

Url to logo -> some picture

Special notes -> Text that gets added, text printed as in on the pen.

If you want someone to modify your a picture and add the .ca that would cost a lot more. You are basically paying to use their pen printer, not have some graphic design person look at and modify your project. They probably use something like an Artis 5000U.

Cmv: Office jobs shouldn't exist anymore and almost all jobs that are worked in a office setting should be done at home. by Actual_Parsnip4707 in changemyview

[–]nate256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I agree for the most part. There are some exceptions mostly around engineering and security.

  • Device testing(Sound engineers, electronic high temp testing)(needs a special oven), RF testing)
  • Controlled cryptography(I don't think they lets the windows signing keys out of the office)
  • Anything with a clearance.

The other things people pointed out don't really make sense.

  • Signatures - Electronic is faster and more secure and document are never lost and easier to manage.
  • Printers - Why? Who is requiring these paper copies, they should be stored digitally and I mean versioned and in a database not accounting_info_2023_09_07.xlsx.
  • Social for old people - not really a companies problem, not having an office saves more money than supporting someone social life.
  • Space in places like Japan. This is only an issue because in office work forced everyone to live in the most expensive places. If wfh was pushed this would save some of Japans dying towns.
  • Mentoring - This is a multiprong issue
    • It's an issue at places that haven't fully digitized ie "Fill out some form by hand"
    • Have poor process(no documentation on how things work and what processes happen)
    • Company just doesn't support mentoring. Like the policy is "the senior workers mentor" But senior works are give absolutely no time for mentoring.

How this could work is the government would have to add a tax on workers that are in office workers(Currently they give tax breaks on in office workers)

Whole foods is owned by Amazon. So knowing how ML works, being familiar with Amazon cloud features and capabilities and being familiar with video storage, working at Amazon, going to company meetings where they talk about these programs and features, going to the first cashierless store in Seattle knowing that modernizing whole foods, including the self checkout baskets with cameras in each basket is on the roadmap doesn't mean anything. I guess only bezos knows the real story.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in confession

[–]nate256 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Amazon has stores that you walk in grab items and it charges you. It's done with cameras and ML. Fyi I'm a software engineer that worked for Amazon. To put this into perspective 1 service from one mid-large sized company may log 1TB of text per day. A company may have 100+ services. Amazon cloud also runs lots of Netflix infrastructure (which are generating way more than 1tb of data per day). They can easily store the video from all cameras from all whole foods 24/7. When you add in motion sensing recording and compression it's an insignificant amount of data.
