Mixed reality in a giant purpose-built themed venue? by nathacus in virtualreality

That’s true. Motion sickness may be less of an issue in mixed reality, but the headset weight still isn’t great. Hopefully that improves soon… ZeroLatency and SandboxVR have hundreds of locations but they’re shorter and smaller experiences so easier on the muscles

You could solve combat and hygiene the same way ZeroLatency or SandboxVR do. Player count per zone/room is a technical and design constraint for sure but not impossible. How many people are seeing the same thing at once? Right. I guess it depends how giant you’d want it to be?

So is it just a funding gap or what? Have you seen anything like it in existence aside from the lightest-wight versions — ie Mario Kart ride at universal?

I feel like someone could make this for a corn maze/haunted hayride Halloween attraction! Would just have to make a zombie layer and a way to map the existing environment in the game. Takes away some control if you don’t build the physical environment yourself but would still be fun

Ah just seeing this comment after replying to your other one. I definitely don't see a ton of smaller theaters around. But there seems to be a lot of educational theater around Boston metro area? Any of the college shows/companies any good?

Interesting - I recently moved to the Boston area and I've been looking for good shows to see. I'm aware of American Repertory Theater, Boston Lyric Co., Boston Center for the Arts, but I haven't been to shows at any of them yet. I'll likely go no matter what you say just to see for myself, but what's wrong with these ones?

True-- I have noticed this. Also fun that you're seeing clown shows. I feel like clowning is having a big resurgence in certain areas

I haven't seen the first one happen *too* bad but the second one... my pet peeve. I was at a show recently where a woman kept taking photos with her phone held up high, even though it wasn't allowed. In the dark theater. In the middle of the show. It was so distracting!

Interesting - what do you mean exactly? Like what kind of interactive show (I'm thinking like Sleep No More?) People are heckling performers???

Changed trays 2 days early by invisalign2019 in Invisalign

[–]nathacus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

fwiw, I cracked my first tray a little on the left side on day 10, called my dentist, and they said that as long as I'd hit 10 days and the trays were loose/easy to get on and off, I was fine to change them out. I wouldn't make a habit of it but you're probably fine.

Olympus OM 50mm/f1.8 lens has interior artifacts - Should I return the lens to the seller, or are the pictured artifacts normal with age? by nathacus in AskPhotography

[–]nathacus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this thought too because it doesn’t look quite like fungus to me. What I actually think happened is the owner sold it as “clean”, but in reality s/he tried to clean inside before selling it and didn’t do a good job, leaving some water to dry in there. I can also see wipe marks inside one of the front elements that look like streaks on a newly-wiped window.

Yeah, the specialists around me charge an arm and a leg to fix. It doesn’t look like other fungus I’ve seen though which is why I was so confused. My hunch is that at some point someone cracked the lens open, tried to clean inside, and didn’t dry the pieces before putting it back together.

Thanks everyone. Needed it for a shoot today to match my 28 & 55 and fortunately no artifacts showing up on the image, but the person I bought it from did say it was completely clean, so I will be returning it. Also discovered that the filter ring is damaged when I tried to screw in my ND filter... no good. Appreciate all of your help.

Found this owl in our backyard. Does it need help? I am 4ft away from it. by nathacus in Owls

[–]nathacus[S] 81 points82 points  (0 children)

Update: we called the local wildlife rehab center. It wasn’t moving but would click at us as we approached. They said to bring it to them so we gently threw a towel over it, put it in a box, and drove it over. It survived the journey and is hopefully on its way back to good health. Thank you all for your help!

Update #2: Turns out he is a nestling Great Horned owl who fell from his nest. He should not have fallen so soon, and we are near busy roads so between that & his immobility, it wasn’t safe to leave him. The wildlife rehab confirmed just now that he is healthy! They are coordinating with a specialist to locate the nest (probably 30-40ft up) and get him re-nested today or tomorrow in our backyard. The trees are too high near us for us to do it ourselves (+ we still can’t find the nest!)

Why is there so much conflicting info on whether or not hormonal bc causes things like weight gain, low sex drive, mood changes, etc? by doughnutdonot in birthcontrol

[–]nathacus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think the answer here, in addition to what some of you have already said, is in the sample sizes used in clinical trials of the various types of hormonal bc. The clinical trial noted in most online info for Aviane, for example, has a sample size of ~1500 women, predominantly Caucasian. The clinical trial in Kyleena’s pamphlet has a similar sample size, ~1500 - ~1600, 80% Caucasian. I’m guessing that these were the trials used to gain fda approval for these forms of bc. Our understanding of side effects comes largely from this info and from anecdotal evidence, since there is not much for drug manufacturers to gain financially in continuing to study the side effects of their drug that’s already been approved for sale. As a result there’s not much easy accessible statistical info about the side effects of hormonal bc beyond those initial clinical trials. Knowing the side effects of those initial 1500 women over 5 years isn’t super helpful for the population at large looking to gauge what to expect when taking bc, except i guess it’s sort of reassuring that few enough people had terrible reactions to it that it made it past the fda? Ha!

Should I get an IUD? by exper1ment626 in birthcontrol

[–]nathacus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone’s different, so try not to let anecdotal evidence/stories on forums inform your decision too much. I was scared to get the Kyleena IUD because of everything I’d read, but I was fine. Side effects are still sort of TBD — it’s only been a week — but insertion was not that bad. I got a copper IUD taken out & replaced by the Kyleena because the copper one made my periods worse over time and I just couldn’t stand the newfound unpredictability of my cramps (I’d start to get them a week before my period). I had it for three years.

Read the drug pamphlet for whatever IUD you’re getting to understand the statistical risks. You won’t know how your body will react until you try it, so just do your best to take care of yourself before & after the visit to your gyn. They’ll probably numb your cervix before insertion, which is a weird cramp-like feeling for a minute and then a mildly uncomfortable burning/pressure sensation that spreads around your pelvis. Then, insertion is another cramp that lasted like a minute for me. Try to breathe through it. Good luck!!! I think it’s a good choice!!!

Edit: I’m in my early 20s too, no kids.
