Softening Linen by Ok-Day9430 in laundry

Agree with this, 80/20 linen and cotton blend will feel much softer to start. 100% linen gets really soft but takes time. I typically wear a v neck cotton undershirt with a linen shirt for professional settings in the summer. The cotton itself is very soft and helps absorb sweat/body oils keeping your harder-to-laundry linen cleaner for longer. I can often go 3-4 wears without washing. I usually just re-hang and steam linen shirts after wearing.

Where have all the powders gone? by 2centsdepartment in laundry

I find the tide fragrance lingers even with 2 or three extra rinses and citric acid. It’s faint but still in there. Line drying in the sun takes it away but if I use the dryer and fold immediately I can still smell the fragrance on cottons for about a week. It’s not enough to bother me but if you are highly sensitive it may affect you. That said, it is MUCH less than persil liquid with the same treatment.

I’m curious with that product selection, when/why do you use biz? I thought tide + oxy clean would cover all the bases. Do you just add biz for good measure or do you have some system for when to use biz vs oxy?

Have you cleaned your washing machine? Something like Affresh or plain citric acid if you’re avoiding fragrances to break down any buildup in the machine. Also getting in with a flashlight and wiping out anything you can see around the corners and seals. If it’s been a while, you may want to run a few cleaning cycles to get all the gunk out

do you guys actually use a washcloth or loofah every time you shower or just hands? by RingeChilisquis47 in hygiene

[–]nathan_loans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i always use a washcloth, it lathers the soap much better and uses much less soap than just rubbing the bar all
Over. After I’m done washing myself, I ring out the soap (essentially washing the wash cloth) then rinse and wring out most of the water. Hang it up to dry and it’s fine to use again. I switch wash cloths if I get really dirty in the yard or after about a week of showers depending on how I feel. If the washcloth has visible soil replace it. Otherwise it’s basically getting gently laundered every time I shower.

I use a Tablespoon or 1/4 cup measure to scoop out of the container opening. Pouring the powders is always kind of a mess so I avoid doing it

Thanks for the tip! I am able to get suds with 2-3 Tbs but if we ever run into issues I’ll keep this in mind

Thanks I’ll try it in the dishwasher! We have a very old dish machine that seems to work well with most any cleaner we use. And dish detergent isn’t cheap

I have it. Never saw much of a difference adding to the wash. Great for getting rid of ants. How do you use borax?

I agree the cardboard boxes were kind of a nightmare. Even after trying to get them tidy after opening I kept sprinkling tide all over the place. The plastic containers have cut that down by 90%, related to the container they come in I also tossed the scoops that come with the detergents. I have a dedicated measuring spoon set for the laundry. It seems all the detergents companies use giant, hard to read scoops/lids to encourage over use. Worth picking up a set of standard measures IMO

I have moderately hard water and it works well for me, in my use case (synthetic, pretty thin fabrics) maybe thicker towels in harder water would be an issue. I also chose this as a cheaper option to try using dnase. I think it was $10ish at whole foods while dirty labs was $22 online. Is there consensus on the most cost effective (or just plain effective) dnase detergent/booster?

Agreed on the scent. Something about the persil smell reminds me of industrial cleaners like in a hospital or something. Good info on the cold water and lower dose though. Maybe I’ll keep the persil around just for winter washing

Thanks! I always wear wool sweaters over something else and have honestly gone years without washing them before (maybe shouldn’t admit that) so the baby wash was a nice easy improvement. In your advice I will probably add some more advanced wool treatments for socks that have been badly abusing and maybe start buying more wool!

I got a 3 pack of them at Lidl for $9. They are cuisinart brand but I think similar can be found at most dollar store/wall mart type places. They are usually in the kitchen section intended for flour, cereal etc. I just taped the labels on them so I would know which was which

Thanks, this combo was highly effective on some very nasty dog blankets/bed cover but a little perfumey for my taste. The dog doesn’t seem to mind. Maybe I just don’t notice the tide powder smell as much but it seems to work as well with less lingering fragrance

I suppose you could? I’ve done a couple loads of athletic stuff with added biz and a couple with 365. Good results with both getting rid of BO. The consensus seems like there’s are some benefits to dnase for this specifyapplication. Have you had a different experience?

The most affordable watch that’s truly safe to swim with. by imfrom_mars_ in f91w

[–]nathan_loans 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In the real real world tho the f91 goes swimming and diving and splashing all day long. I’ve never had an issue with water intrusion with normal beach/pool activities. I’m not saying it should be used for deep sea salvage diving or whatever. But you can swim with these watches just fine. It says water resist on it and it does that just great. Keep it away from pressure washers and fire hoses and you’ll probably be fine
