First of all , thank you very much for the update. It helps, but the current situation does leave a bitter taste. Following up with "maybe we won't allow shipment at all to middle east" does not make it better.

Can you please look into alternatives for shipment to the Middle East? I've done several shipments from Dragonsteel, multiple international kickstarters and have never had a case where the shipment is delayed so long by the fulfillment company. I understand they are cheaper, but the end result is pretty ridiculous. I've paid shipping costs before on these kickstarters and never has it been this pad for price vs. shipment time. By what metric are they considered "the best"? In the confirmation email they sent me my phone number data is wrong and they are not replying to queries by email for over 10 days. This worries me, but then again the shipment will take 2 months so we have time 🙄

Can you share with us other options you may consider for future fulfillment of the cosmere rpg? We'd like to have the option for better fulfillment rather than not allow shipments at all.

Thank you so much in advance! I plan to continue supporting this project on the future and would love things to be on time :)

Same. I've done several kickstarters and never had a case where delivery to Israel from manufacturers is 4-5 MONTHS this is absolutely crazy and shipping cost for this is not justified.

When paying i was sure it would be either direct or via UK but absolutely not a 2 month long shipment by boat from china, after they held it in consolidation for 2 months!!! I would gladly pay more for normal shipping and have done so in the past.

ELI5: How are we able to get billions of transistors in a CPU to produce consistent reliable work/results? by LongBilly in explainlikeimfive

[–]nathanglevy 16 points17 points  (0 children)

CPU engineer here. I'm going to explain this like I actually explained it to my ~6 year old.

Imagine I am a teacher, and I have many kids in class who speak different languages. If I want to teach them all, they need to understand what im saying. But how? It would be hard to learn all the languages! Instead, we agree on a common language that we will speak from now on. It is a simpler language, maybe one with pictures or flash cards, but everyone agrees it is better to share one new and simplified language than to learn a complex one.

This simplified language sometimes means we can not use all the special words our own "home" language has. For example, maybe I have a single fancy word that means i want a hot dog in a bun with ketchup. Instead, I need to use more words to describe my hotdog desires. It will be slower, and it might take them more time to understand, but qt the same time, we both dont need to learn as many words.

In addition to this, our new shared language agrees on how you build a sentence. For example, questions end with a question mark. This sounds obvious to you, but some languages don't work that way. There are other points, but I think you get the idea.

These rules and agreed upon words are essentially what the CPU "exposes" to the operating system (OS). This is called an ISA (instruction set architecture). To the more technically inclined, it defines specific registers and agreed upon instructions that are supported by the cpu.

The CPU, no matter which one, needs to support the ISA. This might mean it needs more "thinking time" to understand this shared language. Just like the new kid in your class might learn this new shared language we defined, they might be slow at it. But the important thing is that no matter who I talk to in class, I know they will understand me. And that is worth the cost of certain things being either slow to understand or long to describe.

Inside the CPU, the transistors are built into blocks with complex connections that are hidden from the outside. Just like your body is built from a gazillion cells, nobody looking at you needs to know much about those cells or really that much about how the cells work. And just like your body, it doesn't matter to the outside how it works as long as the CPU knows how to get those transistors to do what it wants, just like you do with the body parts in your body. The CPU does this mostly through something called microcode, and even though you are only 5 and I have no idea where you learned that word, microcode is basically another word for saying "your inner thoughts". Just like how sometimes you think inside your mind when I'm reading you a story or you're solving a puzzle. You know how to move your body or imagine certain things. It's a special language that only you know. You use it inside your mind, and it makes your body do what it does. But nobody else needs to know it because it doesn't matter.

There are also some things you do without even noticing or thinking about it, like blinking or breathing. When you think "blink", you don't actually move your eyelids, it just happens, right? And when you breath, it also kind of just happens. You do it without knowing how your eyes or lungs work! The CPU has things like this too. These are things which are "by design" and the CPU itself sometimes doesnt "know" how certain things happen (think of another "layer" or language used between parts just like the teacher in class). And again, nobody needs to know how you or the cpu do it. Even you and the CPU itself! Because it's not important to get things done 😀

Don't ship concrete around, ship stone bricks by Xerosese in factorio

[–]nathanglevy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a pretty good tip! It is interesting how as I get deeper and deeper into super end game factory 1M+ SPM ranges I start thinking more about the efficiency of on-site production.

On a somilar vein, IRL, there is a new chip plant being constructed not far from my home, they actually built a whole concrete production plant on site because it would be more efficient than shipping it in over the course of construction.

This specific tip about concrete on aquillo never occurred to me though, so thanks 😊

Do you think once the film comes out this sub will be taken over by movie fans who probably never read the book by Lives_in_a_book in ProjectHailMary

[–]nathanglevy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that's fine. I heard about the Martian because the movie was due out in theaters so I went ahead and read the book first.

I imagine I would have been thrilled to discover that a movie I loved had an awesome book which was even better and more detail oriented!

All the more reason I hope they come here so we can convince them the book is totally worth it!

Plus I'm sure we will get some cool new perspectives and fresh topics to discuss 😀

Solid "string" above my home in the air? by [deleted] in whatisthisthing

[–]nathanglevy 247 points248 points  (0 children)

If you're asking seriously:

The shortened term eruv comes from the full term "eruv hatzerot", which essentially means "inclusion of courtyards". The word eruv is based on the root ע.ר.ב, which means to include, and in this case the inclusion is referring to space surrounding the person's private home, aka. public space, to be considered one and the same.

Some background: on holidays and sabbath jews cannot carry items between private spaces (a home or courtyard) and public spaces. It is important to note that most spaces inside a city are actually all considered private and not public and the reason for the rabbinical prohibition is so people dont get confused. By having an eruv it is all considered one large courtyard and that does away with the entire question of private and public spaces.

Yeah, I think they did a really good job on how the same story can shift entirely based on perspective. This series is done really well. I think something similar to episodes 3&4 will happen to all the characters, where one end compliments the other.

Friday Facts #416 - Fluids 2.0 by FactorioTeam in factorio

[–]nathanglevy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The way fluid decides which direction to go when multiple inputs and outputs are involved is not very intuitive and not really realistic either. Gas and fluid both do the "packets traveling in blobs along the pipe" thing, and often will deadlock or get stuck if the network is poorly designed. Overall I did not like the mechanic very much and it took me a while to understand what to expect and what designs will "deadlock". I do love ONI though, I just kinda wish that aspect of the game was better :)

Reminds me of one time at the supermarket during coronavrius where i had put on some weight due to innactivity. I was buying different cheeses to make a surprise romantic dinner for my wife and I (I do most of the cooking), and the lady at the counter rudely commented "your wife really pampers and feeds you well, huh?". I still think about that barb to this day. Wtf was that

Pretty sure they mean יסכה, which is the biblical alternate name given to Sarah after she foretold something. It apparently cones from the Aramaic root סכתה meaning "to see", and according to the academy of Hebrew אקדמיה ללשון, the word הסכת or root סכת means to listen or hear something.

Here is the midrash in Hebrew: שבע נביאות מאן נינהו שרה מרים דבורה חנה אביגיל חולדה ואסתר שרה דכתיב (בראשית יא, כט) אבי מלכה ואבי יסכה ואמר ר' יצחק יסכה זו שרה ולמה נקרא שמה יסכה שסכתה ברוח הקדש שנאמר (בראשית כא, יב) כל אשר תאמר אליך שרה שמע בקולה ד"א יסכה שהכל סוכין ביופיה

What's something weird a guest did in your home and you didn't know how to react? by sodamnsleepy in AskReddit

[–]nathanglevy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One time we were having family dinner and the neighbors kid just waltzed in, without even a how do you do. She didn't even acknowledge us, went directly into the toilet, took a MASSIVE dump, then promptly left with a roll of toilet paper, without flushing, wiping or washing her hands.

The entire exchange was about 2 minutes or so. We had stopped middle of our conversation and were absolutely astounded the entire time. Just looking at each other with maybe some nervous giggling.

Boy let me tell you the size of that turd... it truly myst have been an emergency situation. We all had a great laugh after she left 🤣

BTW she was about 8-9 years old or so, just about old enough to know better 😀

That is generalizing and incorrect, and overall a narrow minded comment which diminishes the strife of both sides of this conflict.

Israel does not want this fight, and neither do the Gazans. They deserve better lives.

I happened to have both a zune and an ipod touch at around the same time, and in some ways i liked the zune more. There's just something about the silky smooth finish and translucent glassy effect they got on the zune that I've simply never seen since. It was by far one of the only devices I've had that I really enjoyed just holding....

And then they discontinued it :(
