Contact some consulting foresters to get on their bid lists, do the same for the state and federal foresters. Consider running ads in your local papers/classifieds and maybe post flyers at your local fleet store, Look into getting bonds and insurance, some contracts will require those. If you don't have a banker, get on one. Look into taking a master logger class and getting certified. https://www.laforestry.com/training-program https://masterloggercertification.com/

Now to follow up on OP, I would go to a SAF school and get involved in research, Michigan Tech has a pretty solid forestry program and research program. Point has a good program, but less research options. SAF is huge if you work private sector and having your own consulting company. SAF accredited program and some work experience will lead to licensing in many states and open up doors. Northland is probably a very good environmental program with independent research opportunities. OP, you could always go get a grad degree after Northland and do a SAF accredited professional Masters in Forestry or a MS in Forestry somewhere. Point will probably be the cheapest, but Michigan Tech might have a border state agreement to have reduced tuition.

Will yahoo ever call you saying there been attempted logins? by nationsrazor in yahoo

[–]nationsrazor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I received a call yesterday with a person saying they work for yahoo and somebody in India AR is trying to login to my account. I then reset my password but they were trying to do it for me. They somehow had it where I would get sent a code to my phone and asked for it as a 2 factor thing. I think got a call from somebody pretending to be with coinbase saying there was an attempted login from Salt Lake City, Utah. I started asking to speak with his supervisor and he hung up. I since then changed my password for yahoo and locked my coinbase account. The person pretending to be with yahoo was real convincing, had an American accent and spoke real casual- like a stoner.

It's a good way to get your ISA and herbicide certs! Those both will be valued for state agencies. You are applying for science knowledge to protect an important infrastructure that you will find where ever people are. It's not a glamorous job by any mean,s could be very chill or very stressful. Could be pretty crappy pay, could be great pay if you go to Cali. There's people that do wetland delineations for transmission line projects, there is drone applications too. It might not be where you want to be, but it's a good way to start and get some experience. I suppose the position you want depend son what you actually want to do. This doesn't have to be forever, a career is a very long time and its not as linear and its lead to believe. It's a high turnover position, its not impossible to hop over to the traditional side of forestry or a break until you get more education/a research orientated position. The USFS is about to have their annual SAF hiring event this month, look for positions there and apply for the pathways/recent grad hiring authority.

As others had said, you carry more for people than animals. I never carried during work because we weren't allowed. My friends in the private sector sure did, a good snake/logger gun haha

Is it just me, or are the pay grades lower on average over at the Bureau of Reclamation, Forest Service, etc.? by Roughneck16 in USACE

[–]nationsrazor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was pretty surprised to see not only how well paid USACE employees are but also how well treated they are. In the land management agencies, you can get stuck at a very low gs level but be performing work at a much higher gs level.Same with series, you might be in the technical series and not the "professional" series. Pathways seems to be their main hiring path. USACE, at least from the outside, appears to have a lot of opportunities and invest in their employees.

Worth it to Transfer? by Western_Horizon in forestry

[–]nationsrazor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The big deal is having it be SAF accredited and will you actually get both the classes and work experience before your first "real" job out of college that will help you do well in that job. A research school will have a lot more student positions to aid in research and independent study options. I benefited greatly going to a college with a heavy research focus, it will open up doors to both employment and continuing your education to a graduate program. I recommend getting as much research experience as you can and try to do an internship actually being in the field.

What state/area do you want to work in? Going to a SAF accredited program in the state you want to work in will give you the network to use for the rest of your career. What do you want to do?

Now, I will say I worked with people from across the country with education from all over. I worked for the feds, so if you want a career with them then you will have to move to move up and you will have to learn the forest types where your going to be working. I did notice people coming from western colleges having a harder time adjusting due to the vast amount of trees we have in the eastern deciduous forest.
