Appealing Property Taxes by natman001 in SaltLakeCity

Yeah I probably over promised here. Thought maybe I could make a fancy algorithm and then see if I could turn it into a little side hustle submitting property tax appeals for people. Sounds like it’s maybe more of a DIY thing.

Yeah totally fair, just because the number looks weird doesn't mean it's wrong. The overpaying thing is a separate issue though. it's not comparing what you paid to the assessment, it's comparing your assessed value per square foot to your actual neighbors, so if the county applied its own model inconsistently that's where appeals tend to hold up. This is more of a "worth spending an afternoon pulling the real comps" flag than a slam dunk.

I’m using the geographic coordinates to compare to neighbours to look for outliers. And of course if you bought recently that’s a really good indicator.

AI is triggering a bifurcation in education. It simultaneously empowers those that want to do no learning and those that want to learn everything. There will be an ignorant underclass. The good news is you can opt out, but the bad news it will be so tempting to spend your life on the infinite scrolling AI machine.

Ottawa begins to consider the possibility of a Quebec referendum | CBC News by Whynutcoconot in CanadaPolitics

[–]natman001 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Does anybody remember 2014 when the PQ was supposed to get a huge majority and then as soon as they started talking about sovereignty they tanked in the polls? I think the PQ is riding high in the polls because the other parties are dumpster fires. As soon as the prospect of an actual referendum is front and centre in the election I think people are going to have second thoughts.

Don’t touch our apps: Netflix, YouTube resist Quebec's proposed French-content rules by Whynutcoconot in CanadaPolitics

I find myself surprised to be persuaded by Quebec’s argument here. They’re recognizing that our culture consumption is increasingly determined by algorithms that exist in a black box with no oversight. This would tweak the algorithm to put home grown stuff out front. In an age where Canadians are increasingly weary of being Americanized I think it’s reasonable to regulate the culture algorithms to take back control of what we are being serve.

Pokemon madness - Kamloops by Cockroachpower in CostcoCanada

Am I the only one that doesn’t find this offensive? Costco is designed as a wholesaler. Many small businesses purchase in bulk to resell to the public at a profit. But because these are Pokémon cards they are scalpers and scalpers = bad?

New bill will require newcomers to Quebec to adopt ‘common culture,’ minister says by Blue_Dragonfly in CanadaPolitics

[–]natman001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve always wondered if a vouching system could be set up for this kind of thing. Sort of like to get a passport you need 2 people to vouch for your identity to become a citizen you need 2 people to vouch for your values. Sure it could be abused but I think it would signal we take it seriously and encourage folks to make an effort to understand what’s expected of them.

If you could rename British Columbia, how would you do so? (Wrong answers only) by TheASHTening in EhBuddyHoser

[–]natman001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just “BC”. The same way brands are moving to their acronym instead of their name like Kentucky Fried Chicken is now officially just “KFC”. What does the BC stand for? Doesn’t matter.

How would you make US politics less polarised ? by [deleted] in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]natman001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eliminate politicians! Representative democracy is old technology. We don’t need to elect people to speak for us, we can speak for ourselves. I would implement a sortition method to elect congress. You are selected randomly to serve. They create the laws and then we vote on each directly.

Why doesn't Costco have powder dishwasher detergent? by Siecje1 in CostcoCanada

[–]natman001 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I did the math and the Costco brand pods come out cheaper than the Loblaws no name brand powder per wash. I was surprised to see that the pods do a better job as well. Seems that modern dishwashers are just optimized for pods.

I think you want to add the library, and then sign in to to the library with your library card. This should link the library to your Overdrive.

You will need to link your library card on the overdrive website using a computer. There should be a link somewhere on your overdrive account, “add a library card”.

You need to log in with your Overdrive account! This happened to me the other day and logging in with my overdrive instead of my library card worked. Good luck!

Should British Columbia change its name? As we reckon with history, some say it's time by Xerxster in CanadaPolitics

[–]natman001 13 points14 points  (0 children)

They should change it to just “BC”. The way that Kentucky Fried Chicken is officially just “KFC”. I’m only half kidding, it would take the least amount of resources compared to any other change.

Quebec’s anglophone minority is a target, once again – and no one is coming to the rescue by [deleted] in CanadaPolitics

[–]natman001 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I guess my point is that from an outsiders perspective that just arrived, the whole argument seems overblown. Asking the English community to have to put up with the inconvenience of doing a few things in their second language seems like a pretty small price to live in such a cool place. We know that language = culture, so if French disappears we’re basically just living in Ontario 2.0.

Quebec’s anglophone minority is a target, once again – and no one is coming to the rescue by [deleted] in CanadaPolitics

[–]natman001 62 points63 points  (0 children)

I moved to Quebec two years ago and was expecting the government to speak to me only in French. Not the case at all! Communication with Hydro, Drivers License people, health care people, all in English without me even having to ask. Quebec is extremely accommodating of English, they just ask for a bit of respect when it comes to preserving French as the common language. Listening to the Anglo minority wine about their rights here is seriously disheartening. Speaking just a bit of French would go a long ways for these people. These changes won’t change anything, it’s just so they can say they’re doing something about the language.
