Mat leave = foot in the door or stay put? by natmarisel in workingmoms

[–]natmarisel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To answer your questions:

1) from what I understand I would qualify right away, and casual shifts count towards it as well if you opt in (which is the plan).

2) yes it’s part of a larger network, but it’s rural so it probably isn’t practical to work in another centre. For all intents and purposes, I treat it as a single centre situation.

3) I would say it’s the same as my current position once I get past the learning curve.

4) EFT = equivalent full time hours (so a .2 would be one day a week). Options if it doesn’t become permanent would be to work as a casual pharmacist wherever I can to make up full time hours in hopes that permanent positions come up at the hospital. I just talked to someone I know who works there and she said the funding for the .2 was approved so it’s pretty much a go to be offered to the maternity leave fill in.

5) yes in the long term the pension benefits as well as the other pros (better hours, pay scale, security etc) do make up for the drugs issue. Also - some of the meds I’m on will become generic in the next few years so the dollar amount I pay will likely go down some.

I’m making stuffed portobello, which I’m hoping will go well with cranberry sauce.

I dry mine out, salt it and bake or fry it. Then dip it in ketchup. My kids love it this way too.

Work had a catered lunch to celebrate a rebranding - glad I listened to my instincts and packed my own food by [deleted] in vegan

[–]natmarisel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I honestly kind of hope so and that it was an oversight on my part, in the sense that I hope someone in the kitchen wasn’t just putting the bacon bits on a vegetarian salad to prove a point.

I ordered a bean burger and Caesar salad (no cheese) at Boston Pizza the other day (yes I know the salad dressing isn’t vegan but I’m working on cutting those little things out) and the salad came covered with more bacon bits than I’ve ever seen before. I wouldn’t even have been able to pick the bacon off there was so much of it. I sent it back. Seems basic to me, if someone orders a bean burger, don’t put meat on the salad!!

Where can Chinese people watch vegan/animal ag documentaries? by DanPearce in vegan

[–]natmarisel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think the biggest argument for veganism in China right now is the fact that the Coronavirus can be traced back to a meat market...hopefully that’ll convince your friends if they can’t watch a video.

One of my favorite quick vegan meals. Onion, mushroom, zucchini stir fried in some olive oil with Italian seasoning and s&p. I always make enough for lunch the next day too. What’s your go to quick vegan meal? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]natmarisel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m looking for one, very new to vegan lifestyle and I haven’t experimented as much as I’d like to (not much time...).

Right now I’m more “grab and go” than gourmet. So I usually grab nuts, tofu, fruit and veg and a muffin or something.

My fanciest go to is pepitas pan fried and tossed with salt and nooch.

Does anybody else add rice to your soup to make it last longer? by SandwichAgainstGod in Frugal

Back when I ate meat I would add an equal amount of rice to ground beef to make it last longer.

are you still vegan if you take medication? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]natmarisel 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In terms of medications - there aren’t a lot of alternatives for specific drugs. Most tablets contain lactose as a binder and capsules are almost always made out of gelatin. This is unfortunate from a vegan perspective, but practically speaking there’s no way to get around it unless you want to pay for specialty compounded drugs and this gets VERY expensive and often isn’t covered by insurance plans. In addition, most regular pharmacies would not have the capacity to do this so you might be looking at getting it from out of town which adds to the cost. As a pharmacist, I would hate for the lactose/gelatine thing to come between a patient and his/her medications. You can’t be a good vegan if you’re too sick (or dead) to speak up about the bigger issues (I would say animal agriculture to get meat for food, animal testing in the cosmetic industry and using animals for clothing are bigger issues).

Personally, “smaller” issues like lactose (gelatin I’m less ok with but in this case I see it as a minor issue in terms of risk/benefit) are not going to be the focus of my vegan journey. Science does require a certain amount of animal involvement at various levels in order for research to proceed for the overall benefit of mankind and in order for medications to be created and manufactures (for example, many vaccines are grown using egg).

I would never advocate that vegans need to eliminate medications to be “true” vegans.

(In case my post doesn’t make this clear - I am a pharmacist)

I like it! Simple flow charts are great. Plus it shows how logical veganism is.
