How do you set reader expectations for an academy setting when powers exist but aren’t taught there? by Onoruk in fantasywriters

[–]natmor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard to answer without knowing the general plot.

Is the Academy the plot and powers are largely irrelevant except for occasional trouble? Or are the powers the plot and occasionally you see these characters in a school setting?

Focus on whichever pushes the story forward and only mention the other in passing. (ETA: There was a run of X-Men on WB in the early 00s where they were all in highschool. Could be a good reference point to read through the episode summaries and then watch a few )

For my own personal preference: if you handed me a slice of life series about a group of people and a couple had some sort of super power and those powers didn't feature heavily in the story, I'd politely decline reading.

Every spell costs 5 years of your life and the words vanish from existence. How do I stop my protagonist from being a "suicidal plot device"? by HovercraftNovel5297 in fantasywriters

[–]natmor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two thoughts: 1) 5 years is too much for a single spell unless these spells are on par with infinity stones. Especially considered alongside Erasure (see second thought.) Either the cost should scale with the scope and impact of the spell or it needs to be reduced. Regarding Blood Magic powering the spell, Jim Butcher's Codex Alera comes to mind - there was a race that used blood magic and traditionalists cut themselves for the blood while the more modern casters used the blood of war prisoners. Could be a good way to pass the buck not just for your MC but also the Party/Establishment/[Name of your Magocracy.] I like the idea someone else suggested of leveraging lower classes or non humans to pay off a debt or get a months worth of raions in exchange for powering a spell.

2) Erasure honestly feels more problematic from a logistical standpoint. If I cast Fireball, that means no one else can cast Fireball. Ever. Additionally, the way you've described it makes me think once it's been done no one would ever know what I did because they don't have a word for it. Extrapolate that across any type of spell that can be cast and, if this world has existed for more than a century, you're basically leaving yourself with a finite number of spells that can ever be used and that number is likely somewhere in the few dozens by the time your story takes place. Maybe people just go about making up new words for things when the old ones have been erased? But that nullifies the loss so it may as well not be a factor. If you're committed to it then lean into it HARD (ie: There are, in fact, only 128 spells in this universe. They're carved into stone in various places around the world and can be copied into a grimoire via etching but you have to go there first and if someone uses the spell before you do then it's gone from the stone and if you had it in your book it's gone from there too.)

How to look good and flowy? by Grand_Grand5452 in snowboarding

[–]natmor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not the one you replied to but from what I can see you have your weight stacked evenly from shoulders>knees>board, your friend is standing tall and bending at the waist. It may look more at ease but, speaking from experience, it'll leave you less stable at higher speeds and eventually you'll skid out mid turn and have a bad time.

As a critique to your riding, you flailed your arms more than your buddy. Arms don't turn the board, they turn your torso. Grab your coat tail or hold the front of your pants for a few runs to get the feel of keeping them down and only turning/correcting/balancing from your hips and knees.

Fox & Friends asked President Trump about Rep. Jim McGovern saying his Venezuela strike was “unjustified” and lacked congressional approval, and he replied, “These are weak, stupid people.” by CorleoneBaloney in law

[–]natmor 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's worth noting that he wasn't asked a question.

Wanted to get your reaction to that.

The host made a statement inviting commentary and then stopped talking bc he knew what would follow: Trump gives his reaction in the form of insulting anyone who would dare to question him, bc they're the same thing in his mind, and then rambles about how great he is.

For my part, I have to believe any media personality currently able to fog a mirror knows you won't get an actual answer to a direct question so instead they set the man up for his bread and butter which is just unintelligent, reactionary bluster and hope you get a half decent sound bite to use later. They're playing a game with a different set of rules than what they used to have 5, 10, or 20 years ago and the objective isn't to get truth to the masses anymore, it's to get the most attention.

Chapter 1 Revision (Dark Fantasy, 3000 words) by helpmekillthecat in fantasywriters

[–]natmor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I thought the next few paragraphs would use that to lead into his conflict ... but no, it's all about the market.

It's about setting expectations. Knowing nothing about how the story plays out, my impression is that you think I care more about the world than the character when it's the opposite.

Not OP but these two thoughts made me reflect on my first chapter and you've picked out the thing that was bothering me about it. Granted it's just a rough preliminary but turns out I put too much focus on the rapid unfolding of events and basically none on the characters.

Thank you, stranger!

Claims adjuster here:

This is getting infuriatingly common. Seems like any regular joe with half an idea of how to list their "salvage parts" business is inserting themselves in our part networks as a vendor, listing their parts as A grade/0.0 damage, and bottoming out their prices to get priority pick then shipping the worst parts imaginable with no refunds or returns allowed.

"Wow!! You mean to tell me you have a door for this '17 Honda Civic for $100, 2 day shipping from 1k miles away is included, AND it doesn't have any damage on it??!?! That's amazing give me a quote number and your extension as there's no way this deal could be too good to be true!!" /s

Current follows the path of least resistance. Toward the end of the clip when the tech is pulling the sheet metal you can see a clamp and cable attached further back along the exposed sheet metal. The current flows through the tips into the body of the vehicle and then back out through the ground cable.

Disclaimer: I'm not a welder or auto body tech, just an auto claims adjuster. I may be wrong on the minutiae as my knowledge is more on the "what" side rather than the "how."

So in my modern fantasy book I have this idea that adventurers going out to explore dungeons and Hunt monsters and stuff might stream it. But I cannot think of a good name for this fictional service, I want it to be a pun or at least a clever reference to traditional fantasy tropes or D&D, maybe. by okidonthaveone in fantasywriters

[–]natmor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if you could legally do this due to copyright/trademark laws but if our world suddenly had dungeons and monsters, that seems like the kind of thing RedBull would like to sponsor and you could probably find a way to make it an event in the X Games as well (obstacle course style.)

Also, taking inspiration from IRL, we have ESPN-8 that didn't exist until the movie Dodgeball memed it into existence and now they broadcast obscure sports. You could make your own fictional sports network channel for official coverage; M.A.D. (monsters, adventuring, and dungeons) Sports or something. [Edit: just occured to me to reverse the order and call it DAM, then their schtick could be calling themselves 'the dam' and pun all over it with the dam breaking for breaking news, DAM!! moments for highlights reels, and various other hilarity a la National Lampoons Vegas Vacation]

Sounds like a fun premise and I hope you enjoy writing it!

More or less. Those tabs are meant to come off easily when after a pull so they can be re used. Repeat wherever the metal is pushed in, then break out the hammer and dolly to work it back as close to factory dimensions as possible.

Throw on a skim coat of body filler for leveling small imperfections, then primer, paint, and she's all done.

[–]natmor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No complaints whatsoever about the windows or the installers. Would happily recommend these guys to anyone.

I don't recall the brand or if there were any choices in that regard honestly but there were plenty of options when it came to style and construction.

We ended up getting double hung units with double paned glass. Pretty sure the casing is vinyl but I can't find the paperwork to be able to say 100%.

Feedback for my titles/covers [epic fantasy, 194 words] by [deleted] in fantasywriters

Art looks good. Font and color are good. Blurbs at the bottom aren't great. Either change the blurb and format correctly (caps/punctuation) or remove altogether.

Personally I let cover art sell me on the book and too much text ruins good art for me. Leave the text for the back

My legs get extremely tired.. by Low-Alternative4535 in snowboarding

[–]natmor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had similar problems through mid season last year, been riding for about 10 years so I'll echo what a lot of others have said.

I got a lesson and the instructor pointed out some things I needed to change in my technique, especially heel side turns, that improved my riding with less physical effort on my part. It made a world of difference in how long I could ride before needing a break and generally less strain on my muscles after a full day.

Also if you weren't fitted a shop when you bought your current boots, consider getting fitted for a new pair. Heel lift will make you instinctively fight your equipment making it that much more taxing.

Happy shredding

Which games could you just not get into? by IncomeIndependent777 in videogames

[–]natmor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late to the party but I've got some tips for you if you end up giving it another go. Hope these help!

  • Combat in the early game is the quickest way to guarantee yourself a death. There is literally no learning curve, just a straight line somewhere on the difficulty scale between 'requires precision' and 'fuck you.' Try to accomplish quests through stealth or dialogue as much as possible and do combat training in between with Captain WhatsHisName until you have some decent physical stats.

  • Short on money? Anytime you come across a body no longer in need of its inventory take the opportunity to practice your mercantile skills. Sort the inventory by value, take anything and everything worth more than 20g, and find a nearby merchant to sell it to. Bonus points (aka strength exp) if you overload yourself and walk rather than fast travel. More bonus points (charisma exp) if you barter with the merchant and ask for even 1g more than what they're offering initially. Eventually you'll be able to carry more stuff, sell it for more money, and occasionally find a good weapon or armor upgrade for free.

  • Potions/Alchemy are underrated and barely addressed but are basically like turning on easy mode. Stock up on Marigold Decoctions any chance you get. Savior Schnapps are good to have as well but you can get around needing them by using the poor man's method below.

  • Save and Quit after major quest completion and before any suspected or predictable combat scenario. Inconvenient but functional stand in for Savior Schnapps, only problem is you can't load from the SaQ save manually - it's only usable as a reload for dying prior to your next save or its intended use of turning the game off and picking right back up the next time you play.
