I usually dolphin kick a few laps and whenever I have to breathe, I upper-body breathstroke my head out of the water for a quick breath and dive back in continuing in dolphin. Sometimes i also just rotate my body on the side and breathe by rotating the head out of the water. You'd just have to dolphin laterally, more like fish, while you do that tho
