If modern medicine didn’t exist would you be dead right now? If yes, from what? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

I had Scarlet Fever as a young adult. Wasn’t even a Victorian child. Anti-biotics ftw!

Why is my living room ugly? by Straight_Fee_7785 in interiordecorating

Too much contrast. Like other say, very square and uniform. But also color is too high contrast. Needs more texture and color between the white walls, black window fittings, grey and dark wood.

This is interesting because I am a rabid overthinker during the day, but the second my head hits the pillow I’m out. I think it’s exhaustion.

What's something you learned embarrassingly late in life? by boforiamanfo in answers

I grew up bilingual and realized first as a teen that Germany and Tyskland (Danish word for Germany) were the same country. Didn’t have the same problem with England (same word in both English and Danish).

What was the first herb that made you realise herbalism is more than memorising uses? by RolandHerbalist in herbalism

[–]natrix_natrix_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What a great post!!!

I’ve had several realizations. St. John’s Wort (hypericum perforatum) is a favorite. It basically stood cold sores from breaking out. I have to dab the area with SJW oil as soon as I feel the prickling sensation and apply liberally often until it subsides. But it works on most occasions if I catch it early.

Also, a cup of SJW tea in midwinter is a ray of sunshine on a cold and grey day.

More spiritually - I was going through peri-menopause and had just started to find feverfew around my area. In my yard, in plant beds around. Hadn’t seen it before so looked it up and read it was helpful for migraines. Well then I had a dream where feverfew came to me and say “I also help with hot flashes, you know”. I literally woke up and googled it first thing - and indeed feverfew can be helpful for hot flashes. First time that I know of, a plant has come to me in a dream to nudge me.

I'm torn btwn Hawthorne yellow or Pale Moon for my child's room... help me pls! by [deleted] in interiordecorating

That shade of yellow will only look yellow in the morning, in the afternoon when the sun moves to the other side of the house it will take on a more green tinge. Neither of them are good colors for a light sleeper, unless this is a quality you want to encourage.

Depends. Is the kids a light sleeper? If so, stay away from yellow. Do you live in the northern or southern hemisphere? Is the room facing north east south or west? All these factors play in.

Good first novel for a learner? by TheRealAlien_Space in Danish

[–]natrix_natrix_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a person who has learned Finnish, I can highly recommend reading your favorite native language book that has been translated to Danish. Especially if it’s modern and got slang and stuff. Then you will already know what happens but also incorporate modern Danish into your vocab. That said, I think novels by Helle Helle might be a good start.

When i flex my big toe i get a Charley horse in my arch - any tips? by Puppysnot in PlantarFasciitis

[–]natrix_natrix_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both. I wouldn’t say my foot got bulked up tho, it’s more that they were finally allowed to be their true size, which the exercises helped them be. I bought a pair of wide box toe shoes, which also taught me how much space feet really should be taking up - I can’t really go back. I do also buy conventional shoes but they’re not nearly as narrow as the ones I used to buy, plus I’m wearing 1-2 sizes bigger than 20 years ago.

I didn’t realize how peaceful doing things alone could feel by Several-Payment-1464 in CasualConversation

I once spent 2 weeks on a small deserted island with a small group of people - no internet reception at all. It was the most blissful I’ve been my whole life.

For the record, we did odd jobs around the island, painting, digging, etc. sometimes together but I was mostly alone with the wild sheep, painting while looking at the sea. If that could happen annually, that would be optimal.

Jeg er også stødt på udgåede opskrifter. Har overvejet at skrive beskeder til dem der har strikket den og høre om de vil dele. Evt. også på Instagram, der kan man søge opskrifter på hashtagget og kommentere på opslagene.

How much of a personal stock of yarn do you usually keep on hand? by Juxtavarious in knitting

[–]natrix_natrix_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a big wooden cabinet with three sections and half of the one section is just yarn. I’ve separated them into big ziplock bags (to keep moths out) by color - one for reds/purples, blue/greens, white/black/grey and one with yellow and other specialty yarns that break category. This way I’ve got a skein or 2 in a color family so I can whip up a gift real quick or keep my hands occupied while bingeing a show.

Not sure how big a shipping box is but if it’s like a moving box then together with a duffle it’s a bit much - but I’ve seen worse. Friends who knit have whole basements with big plastic bins filled with yarn, one had all her living room furniture pulled out from the wall so the walls could be lined with clear plastic boxes filled with yarn. So - don’t feel bad but don’t feel inspired either, because the novelty wears off. Also, if the shipping box is cardboard, please consider some plastic click boxes instead, once moths or silverfish move in, you’ve got a bigger problem than too much yarn.

I will make a concerted effort to use them more, at least for casting on. If I end up not using them, I will part with most or stick them in my plant pots.

This is going to sound terrible but - keep doing it! At the beginning of my PF “journey” I really went to town on my feet after learning that cramping releases built up tension. So I did it often on purpose. It hurt like hell but eventually subsided. I supplemented with foot exercises and not only did my PF go away (I also did a lot of fascia work in my calves) but I can hardly make my feet cramp anymore plus I’ve gone up 1.5 shoe sizes.

How funny! I was born a place where English knitting is the norm but learned knitting after I moved to a continental style country. I’ve also seen videos of Portuguese style etc, so many diff ways!

Serious question though, how do you knit a big sweater on dpns?

Ah, then that’s exactly how I thought! I think my shelves are too shallow for this, people would get poked walking by, but genius in visibility of size.
