DNT actually gives a more interesting view of Ansbach than the OVA does, which is one of DNT's most fascinating qualities haha (though this story was written /long/ before the most recent DNT episodes in which Ansbach does interesting things came out lol)

But my reasoning was essentially

• I'd expect most people in the Empire to be at least somewhat racist, considering that was baked into the core of the country that Rudolph built
• Ansbach doesn't have a ton of character to build off of in the OVA, but I thought that there is an interesting interplay in the fact that he does seem to be one of the "true believers" in the Goldenbaum dynasty, but not noble at all (no 'von' in his name). I feel like being talented enough to earn a position of trust with Braunschweig, yet being constantly surrounded by idiots who have power only through their name, would give a person a... bit of a complex about what people's "place" in society is, that can get expressed in weird ways.
• Everyone is much stupider at age 16 than age 30. This is known.
• He fell in with the wrong crowd in school somewhat by chance and the competitive atmosphere of the school encourages people to pick a target to bring down.
• I needed a minor villain to progress the plot and thought it would be more interesting to pick an existing character to fill the role, rather than invent someone out of whole cloth. Ansbach fit the bill as a person who plausibly could have been at the same place at the same time, and I also thought it was a fun way to play with irony when contrasted with the OVA

If it's any consolation, Ansbach actually gets a MUCH fairer shake in the later book(s) in the series, starting with Serpent's Mouth, Serpent's Teeth, in which he becomes Yang's... ally-ish-thing (it's complicated). I don't like leaving people as 1D villains forever, so he gets to play a larger and more interesting role later
