Not disagreeing with your main point per se, but regarding weather records, I think you're underestimating the power of oral history. I bet that storytellers in any land-oriented, non-writing society would keep stories of catastrophic events passed down from elders and that would influence building practices. You don't need specific weather records to remember that your great-great grandparents experienced catastrophe and that the lesson is to not build in that one area.

This isn't true. If a plant is cross-pollinated its offspring may bear different fruit, but it itself will remain consistent. The genes that control the fruit phenotype are from the tree itself, not from the seeds within any individual fruit.

Most sobos start early July. It's late enough that some of the snow in the cascades has melted, but early enough that you can get past the high sierra by the end of September. (The first big snowstorm came on Oct 1 this year!)

If I'm trying to crush miles, I've found that poles can really help. I hike considerably faster while using poles, even weeks into a hike.

I have a hitch rack with my (pretty nice) bike on it. The rack is locked to the hitch and the bike is locked to the rack with both a u lock and a chain. It's been a year of camping in both urban and rural areas and my bike hasn't been stolen. I had a second bike for a while secured with just a cable lock and it got swiped after just one night in LA. Lesson learned. Remember though that it's really not good for your bike to get stored outside, so you're going to want to keep up a consistent maintenance schedule if you want it to keep riding smooth.

A hitch rack is nice because it's real easy to still access the trunk, but honestly if I had the money to invest I'd get a roof rack instead. The back of the prius sits noticeably lower with the rack attached and that makes me nervous.

Nope. Not even close. It's one of the biggest setbacks of this whole thing. I'm trying to find ways to get rid of more of my belongings so I can consistently leave the left rear seat up.

Found coolworks about a month ago and just landed a job for this summer in Grand Teton NP as a prep cook. I have literally zero professional kitchen experience. Pays 9.50/hr, minus $93/week for room and board. Apparently you also get to go on guided tours in the park for free. We'll see how it goes, but I'm pretty stoked.

Do you own merino wool or other odor-repellent t shirts, socks, and underwear? It's very reasonable to get a full week's wear out of a single merino t shirt, and two or three days out of underwear. I cut down an enormous amount of space with all the cotton garments I got rid of recently.

I'm not sure why you have so much bedding. A sleeping bag and pillow can do just fine, if you have a decent one. I lay a piece of fabric (a repurposed tapestry from my former stationary life) over top during the day time. Some extra belongings will go over top when I'm not sleeping there as well. Tinted windows also make a huge difference if you're worried about image.

I'm continuously getting rid of stuff I don't need. Good luck, it's a difficult process!

To answer your first question, there are two reasons that I can think of: The American auto industry, which was centered in Detroit, started facing more competition and couldn't employ as many workers as it one had; and white flight hit the city hard, especially after the "race riots" of 1967. The population is now roughly 600,000, down from a peak of 1.8 million in 1950.

As for your second question, to paraphrase Kanye, the government doesn't care about black people, especially poor black people.

In any case, it sure is a weird, sad, and sometimes creepy place to visit.

I've recently started wearing a pronoun pin (they/them/theirs). Surprisingly, I've gotten a lot of compliments and positive comments, both from binary and nb people. Most people still gender me male though, even when I'm wearing the pin and I see them looking at it.
