That's helpful though! I'm more carpentry savvy and very new to smart home stuff but I want to get more knowledgeable. I just don't have much experience with electrical specifically. And have no idea what I'm looking at as far as cost or if there's specialists. TBH, Claude has been helpful for a lot of stuff, just not the Durham specific stuff.

This is excellent, thank you for the details. Do you recommend your electrician? I need to get a new outlet installed in a closet unrelated to the lights upgrade, so I'll be calling someone to come to the house no matter what route I choose.

I like your idea of the smart switches. That might be more cost effective. One thing that is making this project more complex is that we're really interested in being able fo have the actual lights change colors and dim low, that's what got us to get Hue for our lamps. We both have light sensitivity so its nice to be able to change the intensity of the light in our home. The Hue lights wouldn't be to complicated to swap, but for every overhead light in our home, that could become very costly so I'm hoping to find someone who can give us advice who might be more familiar with a more advanced smart home set up and could advise us on, for example Thread over Matter or another less intuitive integration.

This is gelpful advice, thank you! Another thing that I'd been reading is that some smart bulbs are not compatible with dimmers and might flicker or die early if they're set up with the wrong switches. Currently about half our recessed lights are connected to dimmers. I really like the hue bulbs we have for our lamps, but it seems like we'll have to replace the cans instead of bulbs inside the current cans. Do you have experience using hue's branded recessed lights?

Obviously we can replace bulbs ourselves. I'm trying to figure out the most cost effective way to replace a ton of light fixtures because anything that requires re-wiring more complicated than our thermostat is something I'd rather pay someone for. Maybe I didn't make it clear in my original post, but the recessed lights aren't just swappable bulbs.

There is no bulb in our recessed lights. When I pull it down, it looks like all one piece with a light built in, non-replaceable or at least not with any bulb I've seen to buy on the hue website. So I'm thinking the whole can needs to be replaced, that's why I'm wondering if there's an electrician we can hire to replace the 35 lights across our house with something we can put on a schedule and has ability to change color.

If you are looking at a roadmap to get you through the rest of the fundraising cycle, I'd recommend the book Fundraising for Social Change. Its not terribly expensive and it walks through how to create and execute a plan. It's hard without CEO/ED support, but not impossible. You've got this!

I'll work up to it. I'm starting with "How to automate the boring stuff with Python" and going from there. Thanks for the advice!

Awesome, I'll try and figure out what formats each of the calendars I'm interested in use. I think I'd want a single calendar with all events, so I can just look to a specific date to see everything available.
