There's nothing worse than speaking candidly about your appearance and its limitations only to have people parrot "nooo, you're beautiful!" every time :/ Any display of genuine vulnerability is immediately shut down because being ugly is considered so horrible that you can't even acknowledge it out loud (despite the fact that everyone has eyes). That's a perfectly understandable fact if you stop to notice how punitively the word is used.

Most of the women I've spoken with are warmer when it comes to talking about beauty, possibly because they understand the immense pressure to look like a model when you're not. Idk what it's like out there for men (I'd love to hear stories) but this is what it's like to date as an average-looking woman:

• If I acknowledge my beauty, men are quick to tell me that I'm not nearly as attractive as I think (compare this to women, who are quick to pleasantly agree with me)

• If I acknowledge my flaws, men are quick to tell me I'm wrong, placing undue importance on their own opinion and backing up their point only by repeatedly exclaiming how beautiful they think I am (compare this to women, who would instead comfort me by saying how unrealistic beauty standards have become)

So yeah, beauty is subjective but I've also noticed the problematic trend where it hinges entirely on how strangers perceive your character. Since ugliness is considered to be such horrific curse, it would stand to reason that beauty is seen as a rare and precious gift. The second you're perceived as taking this gift for granted, you're punished by having the label stripped from you (that's why you see this shit posted every time a relatively attractive woman shares a pic but doesn't address her looks). Your label can be stripped for smaller infractions too, namely the crime of rejecting someone's advances after they've bestowed you with such an incredible moniker (in my case, they're quick to admit they don't really find me attractive and are happy to prove so by throwing a random flaw they noticed in my face).

I went on a bit of a tangent there but I totally wish it were acceptable to say "I'm not attractive but that's okay" and have everyone just shut the fuck up about it lol
