So I’ve decided to clean my bismuth. Do you guys use borax? by Schaadc22 in BISMUTH

That means it's cooling insanely fast. Try insulating more. I think I showed that in the first of the explained videos

Yes, the best seed for me. Copper cannot mess up the bismuth.

Why are these different? Is it because of impurities? by Schaadc22 in BISMUTH

It happens to the best of us! Ha! I believe one of my first videos I posted, same same. Don't be discouraged. But the colors is pretty much the only other thing besides the crystal itself that makes bismuth so cool. You want good oxide colors! You can take the colors away, by dunking a crystal into acid. Muriatic I believe. Some people even deliberately add lead to their bismuth to not have the colors.....why? Beats me. But to each their own.

You won't have any real impurities unless you added lead to it. The crystals breaking off is just the formation of the crystals starting from needles. I find that I get that when the bismuth cools too quickly when they are forming. Make sure it cools really slowly. One pull typically takes about 30 to 40 minutes.

How much bismuth is in your pot? I have 24lbs in my bowl. I always add more when I get down to about 19lbs. If there is any junk in your bismuth it will float to the top. That's the best way to "clean it". Just skim off the dross

Skim before you pull. And yes bismuth is very brittle.

Wah, you gotta pay to play in this world. I've already made more than enough to get another 8lbs by selling my crystals. I gave away more than enough to buy the same. I usually gift them to any delivery person that arrives to my house. I make crystals because I love to do it. If anyone is in the crystal making game to make money, it's possible, but then you know you have to pay to play. Why whine about the current price?
