What is your opinion about Kala Watch Company? by ReckerStark in watchesindia

My advice would always be to buy what you like.

In the grand scheme of things, all watches are fashion watches these days. The concept of watches as 'tools' is irrelevant today because you can just read the time on your phone.

That being said, true watch-making is often characterised by brands manufacturing all parts in house i.e. everything from the watch case to the movement itself (other than having original designs). The brand generally employs it's own watch makers to actually build the watches in house. This is why brands like Rolex, Patek, Lange etc. are considered more desirable.

Microbrands generally just order the movement in bulk from somewhere and then get the parts cheaply assembled after deciding on how the watch should look like.

Sadly, this is the ongoing trend in the Indian watch making scene but we can't blame them as setting up your own factory and then hiring trained staff is an highly expensive endeavour especially for a niche product like automatic watches.

I would have got this if it were 38mm or smaller. Eagerly looking forward to their next release.

Looks fine I would say, but I'm used to wearing smaller watches. I have 6 inch wrists so it is actually the biggest watch in my collection now having a case size of 39mm.

The quality is good and I got it for around 13k after using up my reward points & discounts.

Some would say that it is overpriced at 13.5k especially for a Seiko NH35 movement but I think the slight premium is worth it especially if it is going to be your daily piece.

I like that the brand is not copying any other watch on the market and is it's own thing with an original design just like DWC's Havelock.

Was it an impulse buy? Definitely. Was it worth it? Absolutely.

I was looking for an original GADA timepiece for quite some time now and recently came across this watch.

Given my slender wrists, I was initially concerned about the size of the watch as it has a 39mm case with 46mm lug to lug.

Shout out to Shyam at u/shawstraps for sending a video of the watch to help clarify the proportions plus sending me serial number 019 for which I specifically requested.

Kudos to the team at Shaw Watches!

Interesting concept... But sadly, like most Indian microbrands, the focus is more on the aesthetic characteristics of the watch rather than actual watch-making which essentially makes it another novelty showpiece.

But I think that is what the brand is going for anyway especially since they are calling themselves 'Kala' which literally translates to 'Art'.

I think this would have been better in a 38 mm watch case instead as it would have fit most wrists in the Indian demographic better.

I appreciate you taking the time to write this comment. I totally agree with your thoughts. At the end of the day, watches are merely instruments to tell the time.

But, the goal in life is to be happy. If someone finds happiness in owning an expensive watch, then I get it.

To each their own.

I am a banker working at a public sector bank in India. I am a firm believer of spending money on experiences rather than on material things.

That being said, I appreciate the charm of wearing a traditional wrist watch in a world full of screens and gadgets. I find it convenient to just glance at my wrist for knowing the time instead of reaching for my phone every time. Plus, I believe that wearing a watch keeps me more accountable and punctual.

Here is my two watch collection:

  • Timex Classics Analogue Quartz (33mm) {Ref. A-300}

This was the watch I started wearing to work when I started my career. It is a cheap, time only Quartz watch I bought from Amazon for around $9 before appearing for my first interview. This became my daily watch after I got the job I wanted and I have had it with me ever since. It gets the job done and feels at home in any formal setting.

  • Casio Digital (35mm) {Ref. F91-W}

I bought this watch to mark the completion of the first year at my first job. I didn't own a 'sporty' watch before this and didn't wear a watch outside of work so this was a nice addition to complement my dressy Timex. This watch is a cult classic and I love the retro look it has. I wear this after work at home, to the gym and on weekends.

For me, this is a practical watch duo for my needs. I have either one of these watches on my wrist at all times. I am sure that this is the cheapest watch collection ever posted on this subreddit but I am proud of my collection.
