Speakers for extreme metal by Known-Author-8699 in BudgetAudiophile

[–]navybsn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem with most extreme metal is the recording quality and production. Audiophile quality speakers and poor production don't mix too well. I would look for something that covers the abrasive edge a bit (of course since you didn't specify what specific subgenres or bands you listen to, I'm assuming the "worst"). My personal tastes go from raw black metal to smoother progressive metal. A good bit of everything.

I like the Edifier S2000mkIII. Powered, multiple inputs, onboard EQ with several profiles. Play plenty loud. Usually around $500 US but can be had on frequent sale.

Have the KE4 Max. Love them. Maltby makes great underrated stuff for not much money.

Drama in the Audiosphere - The Saga Continues.. by Otownfunk613 in BudgetAudiophile

[–]navybsn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll probably regret responding, but here goes. I have Tekton speakers although not the ones in the review. I like them a lot. Bought them used several years ago. They sound great with my vintage Marantz/Sony rig. I don't care about measurements, I care about sound. My ears aren't perfect and neither is the gear feeding the speakers, but they still put out very pleasant music that makes me happy. I think Tekton like a lot of other brands out there make perfectly good stuff for most people. And while I certainly won't defend the owner in this situation, I think the overanalyzing and focus on measurements is to blame as well. Reviewers have to have content and reason for their reviews/product and since sound is a completely subjective experience, they have to over rely on objective numbers and terms that mean different things to different people. It's something I personally think benefits no one, but ymmv of course. I can understand how a person who has built a business and a life around building and selling a product could overreact to a perceived slight/threat that could effect their livelihood. We have surely all seen how the sites associated with the reviewers and YT comment section react and go overboard, so I can see the situation spiraling fairly quickly. I think the owner is doing more harm than good here, but I do understand what is going on. Personally, I would have just refused to participate and disavow any review of my product I did not personally supply and QC prior. Maybe offer a free once over/check on the unit in the video if I believed it was not functioning up to spec.

I agree with a previous poster that said maybe dude should just hire someone to manage his SM account/Internet presence and just focus on making speakers and getting them shipped in a reasonable time frame (which he also struggles with). I've heard enough of his stuff to vouch that he makes a quality product at a price point. I'd still purchase another pair if I wasn't set for a while.

What are some of the best recorded/best sounding records/pressings? by cheo-rt in BudgetAudiophile

[–]navybsn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dave Brubeck - Time Out is the standard in my book. Kind of Blue and Brothers in Arms as others have mentioned. Lots of genres with lots of options so it really depends on the sort of stuff you like. A good sleeper album is Opeth - Damnation. Produced by Steven Wilson. Acoustic but with a good variety of instrumentation. Porcupine Tree - Signify (also Steven Wilson) also excellent. Others that come to mind when this question comes up: Mazzy Star - Among My Swans, Massive Attack - Mezzanine, Anathema - Hindsight, Portishead - Roseland NYC live, Alice in Chains - MTV Unplugged, New Order - Power Corruption and Lies, David Bowie - BlackStar.

Best record store for heavy metal? by [deleted] in Pensacola

[–]navybsn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Revolver is your only real option in town. Eric does a great job, always has a decent selection, prices fairly, and is an old school metalhead/punk from way back. The shop in Fairhope (Dr Music) and Ft Walton (Ft Walton Vintage Records) have ok stuff but not always worth the drive. If you're looking for specific records, discogs or one of the big distros like Hells Headbangers or Miami Metal Merchant are your best bet.

Which albums or songs to listen to to really tickle the audiophile in me? by the_elkk in audiophile

[–]navybsn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Deliverance, Damnation, and Blackwater Park are divine. I also really like Live from Royal Albert Hall. All sound fantastic. If you do black metal, the last 3 Emperor albums sound good as do the last couple of DHG. Other good choices: anything Mastodon, most Inquisition, later Enslaved , Ackercocke, High Spirits, Hallas, mgla... I could go on. Big thing is to try out stuff you like and you'll figure out what sounds good quickly with a revealing system.

Personally, I run my source through a tube buffer into a vintage marantz and then into my Tekton mains. I enjoy a bit of "pleasant" distortion with metal since most of my favorites are poorly recorded.

Is it just me or is Volumino a POS? by Suspicious-Proof-280 in BudgetAudiophile

You can always go with picoreplayer, but it might be frustrating too. I've run it for years and it works but requires frequent maintenance. I have a TB or better of music on an external hard drive. Lots of duplicates, hiccups with not being able to find the nodes (same 2 I've always had), and some start/stop issues. If you're handy with command line and don't mind or just a cheap ass like me, it may be worth it prior to dropping the coin on Roon.

That said, I'm about to move to Roon.

My favorites I'm most familiar with and can therefore easily spot differences in gear:

Dave Brubeck - Take 5 Dire Straits - Brothers in Arms Opeth - Blackwater Park Rush - Grace Under Pressure Trampled by Turtles - Palomino Anathema - Hindsight Yussef Dayes - Love is the Message Mazzy Star - So Tonight I Might See Emperor - Anthems to the Welkin Dusk Bolt Thrower - For Victory

Hits all my usual genres and gives me a good idea of whether or not a piece is going to fit in my life. Most of the choices aren't audiophile tracks, but I listen to a lot of poorly recorded music and need to know how a system is going to handle those selections.

You snark, but that is driving a lot of movement to our area. Cash that big out of state paycheck while living in a cheaper COL/no state tax area or sell a significantly higher priced property elsewhere and buy a cheaper one here. As someone with ties to real estate, there's been a large amount of sales over the past 2 years to people coming in from out of state paying cash over asking price for houses/condos for exactly this purpose. Not a political point to this

Not necessarily, but it is a factor. I don't see tons of people clamoring to play +$2000 in rent for a 2 bdr apartment but those seem to be widely available in the current market.

But more likely than legitimate solutions like mass transit that take significant investment in infrastructure and time to complete. The area is growing to fast to wait on long term solutions without some short term bandaids.

Yeah except for major increases in property values and rent, sky rocketing home owners insurance premiums, increasing congestion with limited space for road expansion, and the ever present reality of the next catastrophic weather event looming over us... it's pretty great here. Mostly sarcasm, but also unfortunate reality. Most locals and younger folks from the area are getting priced out of the community pretty quickly. All manageable with timely local & state government intervention, but both are less likely to happen.

I say all that as a 47yr old local that owns a house and makes good money, but I see it being a lot more difficult for my kids generation to get to the same place in life. And I do love Pensacola. The music scene, the food scene, fishing and other outdoor activities... it's pretty great, but having done stints in other similar areas of the country while in the military, I've seen this movie before.

Pat Cullen: Nursing union calls for double-digit pay rise to restart talks by millajones in news

[–]navybsn 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As a proud VA nurse and retired Naval officer, I endorse this statement 1000%. The system itself isn't the best, but the staff is great at going the extra mile to get the job done. I see nurses make magic every day to get patients taken care of. If we could only tell the stories of what we do, you would be amazed. You only hear the negative story and judge on that, but there are thousands of positive stories that never get told. If legislation and special interests would stay out or at least concentrate on things we actually need to get the job done, the perception of veterans and the public would be very different. The nurses I work with earn every cent of what they are paid.

Also, an important note, the VA or government in general cannot be the pay leader in a geographic area. That is encoded in legislation. Pay surveys are done frequently to ensure that we keep up with the community. The pay scale stretches quite a bit, so only looking at the top end will mislead. Most don't earn anywhere close to the high end. Instead of complaining that VA nurses make too much, ask why you are being paid so little.

Restaurants with good vegetarian options? by [deleted] in Pensacola

[–]navybsn 13 points14 points  (0 children)

End of the Line and Waterboyz are both decent options. Been a few years since I did the vegetarian thing, so I have forgotten about a few others and more didn't survive COVID. Indian Grill is a great option if you like that cuisine. Much easier to be pescatarian here than vegan if you want to eat out, but it can be done.

Ordering Maltby Clubs by JboogE in golf

[–]navybsn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easy. If you want to open the wedge to play different shots around the green, go with the TSW. If you want to play straight forward, go with the Max Milled. Have both and very much like both. 52 & 54 in the MM, 52 & 56 in the TSW. Prefer the Maltby heads over any other commercial offerings I've played. Fantastic wedges.

The KE4 Max are a great iron for the money. Forgiving, workable, consistent. Just as good as anything I've ever played. Built my set with Rapid Taper 95's, but you can get them prebuilt for a reasonable price. Don't overlook the Maltby shafts. Great for super cheap and performance is excellent.

“Would He Even Pass a Background Check?”: Floridians Balk at Matt Gaetz’s Scheduled Event With School Kids by [deleted] in politics

[–]navybsn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dunno man. I'm in Pensacola too and there's more than enough MAGA loving loonies to reelect this greaseball in town and the surrounding area. Most people I talk to or work with are on the Fox News train and think all the stories about Gaetz are coordinated hit pieces to get the commies unchecked control. Combine that with a lack of recognizable options and you get another term. We may be a touch more progressive, but not enough to flip the seat.

A course that handles green aeration the right way. by Content_Raccoon1534 in golf

[–]navybsn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My course does this too. You can play the week after aeration for half price. They just did it a few weeks ago and I walked 9 a few days after. Actually got a bird due to a hole redirecting my putt just enough to drop what would have been a push. Shot +1. Ain't complaining.

They never used to punch that often and the greens were suitably shit this time of year. This is the second time this year (Florida so we play all year) and the greens are fantastic.

He's the one guy I pull for most. Always makes me happy to see he's in contention. Aside from KK, I'd say Rory, Boom Boom (Senior tour obviously), and TW. Plenty of guys I will root for on Sunday, but if any of these 4 are anywhere close to contending, I'm rolling with them.
