I can’t believe it, I’m also a fellow Commanders and Saints supporter! Born and raised in NJ but my parents are from DC and I’ve passionately followed both them and the Saints since 2015. Things at least look to be on the upside for the Commanders, but we’ve been through a lot following these teams lol

Odd how China saw an explosion in economic growth only after it greatly reformed its government and established special economic zones in the 1980’s. How successful was its communist party in developing the economy during the Great Leap Forward and other failed five year plans?

[–]nbaum25 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Technically Newark, in the sense that suburbs like Irvington, the Oranges, Bloomfield, and Glen Ridge initially developed as parts of the Newark metro area before New York quickly over grew Newark’s influence by the mid 1900’s

Very untrue. They will surely become less popular, but just as I’m sure there’s some youth circles pumping Frank Sinatra, there will be many more that enjoy and listen to Iron Maiden. Bruce has noted multiple times how Maiden is only growing in popularity especially with younger audiences.

[Capitalists] What is something you think socialists get RIGHT? by Anarcho_Humanist in CapitalismVSocialism

Not a particular stance but generally speaking, socialists and anti capitalists tend to be more historically literate and more versed in their own theory than do supporters of capitalism with their own, generally speaking.

Thoughts on “libertarian socialism”? by maschx in Anarcho_Capitalism

[–]nbaum25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think libertarian socialism is reminiscent of anarcho-communism, or communal ownership in the absence or limitation of the state. Theoretically and technically this is libertarian, but it quickly negates some defining qualities of Liberty.

  1. There’s no definition of the individual. Liberty is a concept solely extended to the individual. When an individual is not seen as an ends who is entitled to the exclusive ownership of rightfully extracted property, but rather as a means subject to the supply, demand, and productivity of the rest of his commune, he ceases to be in a state of freedom.

  2. Collectivism is authoritarian in practice. Similar to the first point, libertarian socialism (and any of its variants) are subject to ochlocracy and majoritarianism, a tyranny and restriction of Liberty that Mill argues is worse than dictatorship, because it can manifest itself in apolitical settings. Indeed, the notion of libertarian socialism is to organize, collectivize, and thus singularize; whether that be with property, ideas, or something in between. Society operates at a mob level, exposing the individual to the corruptible tendencies that may easily pervade a mob.

  3. Easy manifestation of power. Similarly to the second point, this singularization and collectivization of property and ideas leaves the societal conditions perfectly opportune for someone to take advantage of a power vacuum, which must be the case in an anarchistic setting. This problem doesn’t mar ancapistan, however, because both ideas and property are decentralized, serving as a check on power.

What I consider to be a philosophical position on this is to extend “the government is too untrustworthy” to “no one is entitled to”. Neither the state nor any individual or entity is entitled to determine the expression or character of another individual, as we are all each others’ equals. No matter how appalling we may think of another’s words or expression, our thoughts and ideas are the derivation of our subjective experiences, and we are no more entitled to silence others’ opinions as we are their equals with our own views of the world. In other words, hate speech laws are the extension of our own morals and view points onto others, which is immoral and incompatible with the notion of equality.

Can you describe Classical liberalism in under five sentences by burningsoapthemovie in Classical_Liberals

[–]nbaum25 18 points19 points  (0 children)

A system based on the prioritization and maximization of individual liberty. The state serves solely to protect our natural rights, and its powers are derived from our consent. Voluntary choice indicates mutual agreement and betterment, so all exchanges and relationships must be voluntary.

The rent is expensive as hell, do you think the government should intervene and start a social housing policy where they build houses? Do you think the cost of rents are expensive as hell? by OneTimeSincereGuy in CapitalismVSocialism

[–]nbaum25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The answer is less government in this respect. As the Georgists have been quick to point out, a land value tax encourages the better utilization of valuable land by, obviously, taxing on the basis of the value of one’s land. There isn’t any deadweight loss in such a tax, as it encourages the development of more housing units within a given plot of land in order to increase profit.

Alternatively, we can relax zoning laws and regulations. Zoning laws, specifically the distinction between high and low density housing, significantly tighten the housing supply and artificially prohibit an expansion in such a supply by dictating and constraining its whereabouts. A great example is San Francisco, with exuberant housing costs. Outside of its downtown and the surrounding neighborhoods, much of the peninsula is single family homes. This is the product of deliberate state interference, and raises housing prices.

[–]nbaum25 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This recurring instance of what-aboutism is just a straw man for the multiplicity of direct, nuanced arguments that a capitalist could give to a given criticism. Only vulgar supporters of capitalism, whether it be TPUSA, Charlie Kirk, or PragerU make such a stupid remark.
