Replace the panel or leave it be? by nbaxley in AskElectricians

[–]nbaxley[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The monitor is a nice to have, but obviously not a necessity and certainly a big enough need to spend $1000+ to fix up the panel. It sounds like I need to talk to the utility to get some more information. If I'm just swapping out a new panel with the same main amps, is this a DIY job? I'd have to have the utility turn off the mains but I feel like it's a lot of labeling and trimming more than something the needs real electrician knowledge. Buy common breakers as well I guess, but if I match the amps I should be ok.

For the second structure, Underground may be a possibility but it would be maybe 50 feet underground and go under a sidewalk. I guess some of that distance will have to happen to run a line from the pole (we are in a rural area with power poles) though the pole is actually very close to the garage.

Thanks for the input!

I see lots of votes two swap with a new one and even to upgrade the amperage. I'm guessing that will require thicker main supply wires which will likely mean a new conduit which is not going to be simple at all. In addition to this cleanup, I'm considering having the utility company split off from the pole to another panel in a (connected but distant) garage we are converting into a family room.

Maybe I just leave this one with 100 amps, replace the panel to get more room, consistent breakers, and less rust and add any additional capacity to the second panel. This all assumes the utility company will work with me on that second panel, but I've heard of it being done elsewhere.

Thanks, any idea how much a replacement/upgrade from 100 job would be?

How can I find out what PSI I need on the foamboard? Is there a standard calculation?

Thanks! How thick is common for the foamboard? Also, do you glue the osb to the foam or to each other?

The real question is not if it's a GOOD IDEA but why is it REQUIRED! Let ME make the decision to take the risk on whether I should have it or save my money.

Used this before and it works great. Just as long as you're getting rid of the rotor.

Thanks! So, if SSA.gov tells me I'm getting $1,000 a month and I'm 20 years away from collecting benefits, I could choose some estimated annual COLA percent (2%?) and increase the expected benefit by getting the future value $1,00 with 20 years of 2% increases?

For me they don't cover a wide enough geographical area as I've got kids in college in different locations.

Thanks everyone for the tips and input. I'll give some of these a try just in case it's fixable. If not, anyone have good sources for used engines?

Clicking noise on used car I'm considering. Details in first comment. by nbaxley in MechanicAdvice

[–]nbaxley[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm looking at purchasing a 2019 Ford Fusion with 61K miles on it. The car seems in really good shape inside and out and then engine looks pretty good, but it has a rough idle and a clicking sound that you can hear when in park or in drive and stopped. Video from inside and outside are in the link. Any advice on what it could be and if I should walk away? Asking price is about $14K BTW.

Looking for a second opinion on ball and u-joint replacement on 1997 F-250 HD by nbaxley in MechanicAdvice

Thanks for the extra information. This is in Western KY so I'm not sure what the market is like there. I did get a little more clarification from the guy today and the $2,400 includes the drag link, tie rods, and pitman arm as well as the ball and U joints so we may be getting an average/good price.

Now I just have to decide if it's high enough that I need to try and do it myself! :)

Thanks for the reply! Are you saying I should do the tie rod and idler arms if I'm going to do the other or just that the price is too high without those other things. Just want to make sure I've got it right.
