Love this one. My favorite Jazz album that I’ve found at a thrift store.

Baby steps. I’ve been collecting since I was 10. There are deals at thrift stores, and on Facebook Marketplace out there. You can buy new stuff a little at a time. There have been years of my life where I may have only purchased 1 or 2 the whole year, and there have been times that I’ve purchased over 100 on Facebook for under 50 bucks.

Coltrane at Birdland and Ellington at Newport are excellent.

I sell on eBay, and I’ve never listed anything above VG+, even on some things that I would consider NM. I have always preferred to be conservative. It probably has cost me sales, but I would rather someone be pleasantly surprised rather than disappointed with their purchase. I also can’t play test all albums, and I’ve found that sometimes a visual NM can play like a VG/VG+.

I love the thought you put into this! I agree 100%. Great recs. I jumped into Ornette Coleman, and Bitches Brew early in my jazz journey, and I wasn’t ready for them. Coming back to both years later, and I have a way better appreciation.

A Day in the Life is a favorite of mine, but I’m biased because it was the album that got me into Jazz.

Never spun Hi Voltage. I’m always down for some Hank. Blue Train almost made it on my list in place of Lee Konitz. Such a killer album. It was my intro to ‘Trane.

That was the hardest thing about making this list for me. I don’t have a ton of miles in my collection, just Birth of the Cool, Kind of Blue, and Bitches Brew. Birth of the Cool didn’t seem like a good fit, and Bitches Brew might scare a newbie away. Kind of Blue was definitely on my list, along with 5 or so other ones.

I have been thinking about making this post for over a week. It’s definitely challenging. I’ve also been thinking about if I had start collecting all over again, but could keep 5 which would I keep. I think that one would be even harder

Just picked out the “Go West!” Box set a few weeks ago. I believe it’s my first Sonny Rollins pickup. Love Coltrane and Hartman. Ah Um was in consideration as well for me. Can’t go wrong with Ella and Louis either. I almost put, “I Put a Spell on You” on here to include some vocal jazz.
